So many cities have gone downhill since COVID. But which is the worst?

I quite like what I've seen of Nottingham. Mostly the city centre and West Bridgford and places in between.

I feel so sorry for Bradford, the buildings are beautiful. Leeds has it's problems but there is more footfall and it is more upbeat and bustling. Plus I love the Corn Exchange, Armouries and Tiled Hall Cafe in the Art Gallery 💗

I misread your post about Leeds and thought you said it had more football, so I was about to rave about Leeds United!!

We accidentally drove through Luton a few years ago and it was very run down.

I had to go there twice recently. I’m not joking when I say I came across multiple heroin users. Stopped at traffic lights, several people crossing, muttering, I was careful not to look at them directly. Very concerning place.

I do too but I like grim places - bit more character somehow.

It was grim back then, but its even worse now.

I went to a conference in Manchester in February and had a great time. I adored Salford; went to the Lowry and the art museum, the science and industry museum and the Palace theatre.
everything and everywhere is often what you make of it.
Apart from Slough, obviously, that’s really shit.

dustabsorber · 15/09/2026 21:39

Another vote for Luton

That’s so sad. How do we have people flying short distances in private jets, owning several
massive homes etc and also this? Any one of us could end up in dire straits and in need of housing.

I walked past there on Friday on my way to St Pancras. Heartbreaking

OneLilacHedgehog · 15/09/2026 21:42

I had no idea there was a tent city around Euston.

Surprised Swindon hasn't been mentioned although I guess technically it's not a city.

Agree with Salisbury having gone downhill too.

And apparently I'm posting Sesame Street stylee - this post is brought to you by the number 3 and the letter S - Southampton.

🙄 why so negative, what’s the best city centre you’ve ever been too? I think Liverpool is fantastic.

I love Liverpool

Just spent the day in Manchester - that seemed pretty bad.

Are you kidding?! Not sure where you went through but that city is amazing, its the new London....

Yes really shit - walking distance from Windsor, on the Elizabeth Line so fast trains to London, near the Chilterns, a Grade II Listed park,...
It's not a city.

PermanentTemporary · 15/09/2026 21:44

I love Manchester and Liverpool, though Liverpool even in the most glamorous bits always feels like the hard times aren’t far away. Beautiful though.

i think towns are much more likely to be bad than cities. I arranged a date in High Wycombe once, which was a mistake. Rough.

Salford isn't Manchester as my grandad would say. He was a proud Salford man. Did you visit the precincnt?

Alittlefrustrated · 15/09/2026 21:45

Sunderland - the great shops and nightlife of my youth are no longer there.

Booboobagins · 15/09/2026 21:45

What a ridiculously negative post amd everyones answering it! Jeez....

BirmaBright · 15/09/2026 21:45

I am genuinely suprised by the Birmingham haters, I got a coach there , walked to the train station and then out the other side and got a tram, and then wandered to my relatives place which is central, people were lovely and it felt like a really vibrant place when I went for a walk around the next day. Not a city lover generally as a country girl , but really liked Birmingham.

Careful unless it’s of major size or importance having the status of an episcopal see some posters will be falling over themselves to tell you it’s a cardboard settlement, hamlet or town at best

Precinct? Probably not, stayed in a holiday inn next to the BBC and went to the Lowry.

I haven't been to every city centre in the UK, so can't really compare them all.

Same!

Sugargliderwombat · 15/09/2026 21:47

Was shocked to not see Croydon mentioned, then realised noone ever goes there !

It used to have an undeserved bad reputation. Since Westfield ruined the town now the reputation is very much deserved.

Badgerandfox227 · 15/09/2026 21:47

Birmingham is grim - went there for work today and the number of drugged up people, homeless, shouting out random words is crazy. Nothing like it used to be sadly. It used to be a great place to shop and go out but it’s so rough and dirty now.

Around the canal is lovely from memory.

There are vulnerable people and people without homes in every city. The way we are hurtling back towards Dickensian times, it’s only going to get worse.

Ely cathedral is the most amazing building I ever seen. Its breath-taking.
