So many cities have gone downhill since COVID. But which is the worst?

OP posts:

St David’s is simply gorgeous. No better city IMO.

Ridiculous thread.

Leominster, Maidenhead, Luton, Slough, Hounslow..? Some of you need to learn what a city is and therefore what a city centre is.

It's not just pedantry. Cities are big and complex. Posh bits and shitty bits. And city centres are the same.

Homelessness, ebikes on pavements, begging, retail decline. These unfortunately are common in most British city centres in 2026. Calling out "[city name] has gone downhill" as your justification for naming it in a thread about "the worst city centre in the UK" just shows your ignorance. Oh, you saw a homeless person or some empty shops, did you? If that's enough to send you running back to your suburban retail park, you don't know what you're talking about.

Hereford isn’t larger and more complex than Reading. Bolton is massive compared to Winchester. Loads of cities are only cities as in time immemorial they were designated such, in common parlance people clearly use city/large conurbation interchangeably

Birmingham City Centre is disgusting. I am Birmingham born and bred, and now I hate going “up town” as we Brummies say.

There is an undercover area between our two main railway stations. This has become the area for the homeless to sleep. There are mattresses, people passed out in pools of vomit or urine. Drug addicted people begging and grabbing your coat.

Come on Prime Minister Burnham - you said you would end homelessness!

Yep I had to walk through it every day to work from Moor Street Station. Some girl got stabbed to death there last year. Birmingham is a s*it hole now but most of the areas in Birmingham are getting like it.

But incorrect. Cities come in all sizes. City centres are not all the same.

Gorgeous, small city with a regular market and a range of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Www.visitripon.co.uk

Yeah, this is pedantry. Market town with a big church.

Leominster? Maidenhead? Come on...

Downward spiral sadly.

We all shop on line, no customers, no shops, no high streets.

No high street, no choice, we all shop on line.

Nothing left, destroyed by the likes of SHEIN & TEMU with their poor quality, cheaply made, sometimes unsafe products.

Leaves empty shops, charity shops, nail bars/barbers and vape shops. Often scruffy and cheaply fitted out.

We need to change our habits. (difficult with little left).

I don't just shop online. Theres a shop in my home town that sells short dated foods cheap and it's doing a roaring trade. I buy there every week. Similar several cafes. There's more than a few independent food places that do very well where I live. West of Scotland

It’s the same in most places. My home city Gloucester has gone exactly the same way. Shops closed down and boarded up and the place filled with alcoholics and drug addicts (fighting outside my workplace most days). It’s dreadful.

I recently filled in a questionnaire about it and said both the council and police should be totally ashamed of letting things get like this. This once beautiful city is now a shithole.

But as everywhere seems to have gone downhill, someone in the council, police, government has allowed this to happen by changing laws and byelaws.

No, someone (let's start with Cameron and Osborne) believed the austerity myth and slashed local government spending on services like street cleaning, homeless support and drug rehabilitation.

Just spent the day in Manchester - that seemed pretty bad.

I like Manchester

Violinist64 · 15/09/2026 22:27

Peterborough is very run down but at least it has a lovely cathedral and fantastic transport links. Otherwise, it is a very poor place. Ipswich is a large town rather than a city but it is a very depressingplace. I sometimes think Peterborough and Ipswich could be twin towns.

I actually dont mind Leicester. Went to uni there, though obviously it was a while back.

It's not obvious. We don't know you.

😂 PEDANTRY

Why, is it not a city…because you say so?

Don’t be ridiculous. Designated a city since 1865.

zigazigaaaing · 15/09/2026 22:30

Preston, Bradford and some parts of London have never recovered since covid and have really gone downhill

Oopstheregoesanotherhouseplant · 15/09/2026 22:31

It’s really depressing that so many posts are talking about people with vulnerabilities and/or without homes as eyesores, getting in the way of a nice city break. It’s really dehumanising. I get that it can be unnerving walking past someone off their head on drugs or being asked for money, but can we try and remember that these are human beings that are highly likely to be dealing with post trauma impacts and we are all only a few major traumatic life events from the same or similar risks.

Violinist64 · 15/09/2026 22:32

The opposite end of the scale for me is Norwich. It is a beautiful city. Every entrance to Norwich proclaims that it is a fine city and it is.

And breathe… no need for a lecture.

But other than Luton they aren't cities. They're towns. You aren't going to go there for the sort of things you'd go to a city centre for.

RogerBakewell · 15/09/2026 22:34

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 15/09/2026 19:37

Luton has to be up there.

I'm more saddened by the cities that used to be lovely and have just got sadder and sadder. Truro is my home town. When I compare it to the city I moved to 30 years ago it makes me want to weep.

What city did you move to 30 years ago?

Yes, it is officially a city.

It has no place in a thread about "the worst city centre in the UK" because it is, at heart, an affluent market town with a cathedral.

Ripon's nicer than Piccadilly Gardens, is it? What a shock!

Truro. That's what I'm.trying to say..I moved here 30 years ago and it's unrecognisable now.

PleasantPedant · 15/09/2026 22:39

@ALittleBitDifferent We all shop on line Not all of us.

SinuousTendrils · 15/09/2026 22:39

Northampton was shockingly bad when i had the misfortune to visit a few years ago.

It doesn't mean they're correct.

thenightsky · 15/09/2026 22:40

Has anyone mentioned Brighton yet? People seem to love it but I found it scary with a weird undercurrent of aggressiveness. Plus it was filthy with litter and discarded food all over the pavements.

CharlottePotatoes · 15/09/2026 22:32
