The secret of nimh (which I seem to be the only person to have ever heard of)

Yes, based on the book, Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. Did it at school in year 7!

I’d also say Gremlins, Chucky and a horrible TV show about a girl in a stately home who had a massive birthmark on her face and couldn’t look in the mirror. No idea what it was called but it was terrifying!

Zammo overdosing, Danny Kendall dying in the back of Mr Bronson’s car, the kid that drowned - Jeremy ?

Omg Chocky and sapphire and steel used to really scare me and the dancing flames and music to tales of the unexpected!
I watched the micheal Caine horror film “The Hand “ with my elder cousins and it scared the turds out of me 🙈😅😂

Noseybonk !

Gives very Clockwork Orange vibes.

Lilmisspeacekeeper · 14/09/2026 19:45

Some other posters have mentioned the public information films, the one that scared me the most was the boy on the farm who fell into the slurry and drowned😱 absolutely terrifying!

Offherrockingchair · 14/09/2026 19:46

A quick Google tells me Moondial. I don’t think it’d be shown these days!

How could I forget that ?!!!
And Threads

My two biggest ones there.

Also Salem’s Lot.

Additup · 14/09/2026 19:47

The public information film warning about throwing stones at train windows and the windows shattering. I still think about that when I'm travelling by train and I'm mid 50s!!!!

JenniferBooth · 14/09/2026 19:47

Venom NOT the Tom Hardy one. The Sarah Miles one. Black Mamba snake leaps out of a drinks cabinet right in a blokes face.

YourFairCyanReader · 14/09/2026 19:48

Scenes of people disappearing into quicksand, and also being buried up to the neck on the beach and left for the tide to come in. Not sure what films they are from.

Biff in Back to the Future was really awful. Also the bit in Superman where he gets poisoned with kryptonite and nearly dies.

Moondial?

I've seen the Secrets of NIMH too, only once and never again. The same with Watership Down and The Never-ending Story. Once is traumatic enough.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 14/09/2026 19:51

The secret of Nimh - the mouse house sinking, the great owl!

the watcher in the woods - neeeeerakkkkk

As a very young child I was terrified of the advert for Wookey Hole and its famous witch. So much so my mum would leave the room with me whenever there was an ad break in a tv programme

Yes! I remnant that!

I remember watching "The Day After" with my family when I was about 7/8ish. Also watched "The Island of Dr Moreau", the old one with Michael York when we were supposed to be sleeping in the front room and had visitors round. Scary times

Maelstrom - the burning dolls are imprinted on my mind forever.
Also the cybermen, the opening sequence and music to Tales of the Unexpected, and Zammo’s drug overdose in Grange Hill.

Oh yes, I came to say Ghost Watch. Petrifying!

Was that what it was called! I remember it totally backfiring on the BBC even with Sarah greenes terrible acting, people complained how scary it was 😱

Seldomseen · 14/09/2026 20:04

Watcher in the Woods was a Disney film wasn't it?! The bit with the mirror breaking and the creepy figure of a girl appearing behind it was terrifying as a kid.

Also, Wordy from Words and Pictures. We watched it on the big TV in primary school. The orange little git would jump out from behind scenery, usually shouting something, scaring the life out of me.

Lomonald · 14/09/2026 20:04

PiggyPlumPie · 14/09/2026 19:04

We watched that yearly at our primary school on a new build estate in the suburbs of a city...

Made my eldest watch it with me on you tube. 25 year old her was horrified we watched it so young.

Now the young un know why we are as hard as nails we endured that 😂
