The cartoon film of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe - when they killed Aslan on the stone table

heymammy · 14/09/2026 19:00

and yes... the public information films were millions scarier than actual horror films.

The dogs with rabies, the aids tombstone the nuclear war one. God.

The secret of nimh (which I seem to be the only person to have ever heard of)

I'm a geriatric Millennial rather than gen X, but Boy From Space gave us all nightmares in ~1991 year 2 English.

Chimichanga99 · 14/09/2026 19:03

The Boy from Space! That weird blond kid in the blue suit and the older blond man? It was filmed in a quarry and we had a quarry near us to was always spooked out going past it

Also, the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

This!

I was scared of when Teen Wolf’s eyes glowed red and he said ‘give me a keg of beer!’

Oh god yes the PIF where they all died in horrific farm accidents.

We watched that yearly at our primary school on a new build estate in the suburbs of a city...

Made my eldest watch it with me on you tube. 25 year old her was horrified we watched it so young.

Re: Flowers in the Attic.

11 year old me just casually devouring a whole series of books with themes of child abuse, imprisonment and incest, probably while inhaling my dad’s secondhand fag smoke and chowing down on some plastic white bread and Dairylea sandwiches washed down with a pint of Vimto 🤣

RatsCatsandPuppies · 14/09/2026 19:06

Another vote here for Watership Down - absolutely terrifying!! I’ve never been able to watch it again since our teacher put it on the class TV on our last day of year 6!!

Txutxioyigx · 14/09/2026 19:07

I loved Flowers in the Attic, read them all !

Watership Down was a traumatic watch. I couldn’t watch it all the way through as I cried so much my mum had to put me to bed and couldn’t leave me until I’d fallen asleep I was so shaken.

Txutxioyigx · 14/09/2026 19:08

It was the scary alien man in Boy from Space that terrified me
Also Stig of the Dump

Quatermass (late 1970s version)

Dullmary · 14/09/2026 19:10

The episode of the Twilight Zone with the girl without a mouth.

Useyourfork · 14/09/2026 19:13

Fraggle Rock - The Terrible Tunnel
The Tall Knight of Dark Towers

Dabralor · 14/09/2026 19:15

Those Jimmy Savile safety videos they showed in schools- lots of footage of kids trapped in window blinds and being squashed under farm machinery.

Traumatised me for years!

PartyHard · 14/09/2026 19:15

There was something sinister about the jester guy in Rentaghost, too.

I watched a clip of it online a while ago and the whole thing is like a bad acid trip.

I tried watching this recently but the child catcher still scares me!

heymammy · 14/09/2026 18:58

Definitely Hammer House of Horror! The one where the wee girl is having a birthday party and the pipes burst and blood comes pouring out 😱

I don't know why we were allowed to watch this stuff, I was maybe only 4ish when I watched the above episode.

Mind you, I watched all kinds of horror growing up and was rarely scared beyond the age of 7 or 8

That particular episode stuck with me for years.

There was also the information film about the dangers of railways called Finishing Line that I saw at school. It was so disturbing it was later withdrawn(!)

We didn’t get the safety videos at our school. Other than the green cross code and ‘Charlie Says don’t talk to strangers’, which weren’t very scary.

converseandjeans · 14/09/2026 19:17

The Boy from Space for me too. Peep Peep was really strange.

Threads ! I read they were remaking it or reshowing it i gave it a wide berth!

That spoof ghost programme, was it Ghost live or something the girls were supposed to be possesed , bloody terrifying.

Hammer House Of horror, was allowed to watch it on a Saturday night.

Oh yes, I came to say Ghost Watch. Petrifying!
