Partner makes me feel insecure & I dread going out

Hi all, I feel so insecure in myself/relationship that I don’t want to go out anymore. Bit of a long one but really in need of support.

I’m 25 and really really struggling to not hate myself and feel insecure. My partner honestly never compliments me even if we’re going out, I’ve dressed up and made an effort I get not one single compliment. On top of this my partner has made it clear that I’m not his usual type and constantly gets at me to do things to change my appearance such as wear more makeup and have my hair straight as he says things like I look like a ‘witch’ with my curly hair.

I’m struggling when it comes to going out with my partner as I always notice him staring at women who are his type/are attractive. I understand everyone glances at people of the opposite sex who are attractive and there’s nothing wrong with appreciating someone’s beauty, but my partner will obviously stare at them/check them out till they’re no longer in view and even if the woman sees him staring at her he’ll still keep looking. It makes me look at these woman and wish I was more like them and it makes me feel really stupid and embarrassed as they’ll see that he’s with me yet he’ll still stare at them like he’s never seen a woman in his life and in my opinion it makes him look like he’s available and interested in them.

I thought the issue was only when I go out with my partner but it’s now gotten worse. I went out by myself today to do some shopping and I wanted to hide and go home. There were a lot of attractive girls around, many of whom were my partners type, and all I could think is why can’t I be like them, I’m not good enough etc. I don’t really get along with girls as in my experience they’re rather bitchy and when I was out today some girls gave me dirty looks when I was walking past them almost as if I’m below them. I’m now back home and have got straight into bed under the covers, I honestly don’t want to go out again any time soon and want to stay home.

I’ve always been somewhat insecure as I’m underweight, have absolutely no figure and I’m rubbish at doing my makeup, I look like a clown when I try to do it. But I feel it’s now got really out of control and it’s going to take over my life. I feel like leaving my relationship as I feel a lot of pressure to look a certain way. I’m about to go on a massive spending spree and buy clothes that I like but also that I think my partner would like me in as I feel like I need to do better. I also have a hair appointment on Friday to get my hair professionally dyed and straightened which honestly I’m excited about but it’s all because my partner keeps nagging about my curly hair.

I suffer with mental health and struggle to get out the house as it is due to anxiety etc so me going out by myself today was something I was hoping to feel proud about but instead I feel self conscious. I’m seriously considering getting cosmetic work done to make myself look better, I have so much going on and feel really under pressure to look a certain way. Feel like I could cry right now, just needed to get this out my system😔

Dear op, he's an idiot

Your partner should make you feel beautiful not insecure and there's someone out there who will love and appreciate you just as you are

Dump him

You're with a vile man who has chosen you as his partner precisely because you are mentally vulnerable and he can therefore bully you into submission. No amount of sexy clothes and hair straightening is going to stop him doing this. The goal posts will just move and you will still not be good enough for him in some other way. He's a horrible, pathetic, inadequate, incel sounding specimen, which you must throw back into the swamp he came from if you want to get your head straight.

I doubt very much indeed that random stranger women are giving you filthy looks and judging you. This is your partner's voice inside your head. You have let him get to you and undermine any confidence you may have had. Go and spend your money on therapy to pinpoint why you are so down on yourself, instead of on clothes and hair products to appease a pig man.

This post absolutely nails it.

Print it out and read it regularly to give you strength to leave this disgusting man.

He's done such a job on you. Agree with everyone, get out, block him, let him find his "ideal woman"(spoiler-there isnt one) and read this Source: Shortform https://share.google/mfq8MLj0vz7jFU211

“He’ll just say that I won’t find anyone as good as him/other men will use me for sex or that he’s just trying to help me look better, he often says how he’s out of my league and acts like I’m lucky that he’s even considered me as a partner…”

This is straight out of the abusers text book op. Please gather some strength to leave this piece of shit. He’s negging you and destroying your self esteem. He doesn’t love you.

And when you do dump him - word of caution - he’ll come snivelling and begging and love bombing you to take him back. Don’t.

gardenbadger · 10/09/2026 08:49

Fwiw @MeganBooi wanted to add that your appearance isn't the problem. It's just what he's using as an excuse to bully you, because the bullying is the point. He's learned that this is the right button to push to get the result he wants. In a different woman, it would have been her hobbies, her cooking, her beliefs, her taste in books, music, sport etc.

The bullying is the point.

MalteserGeezee · 10/09/2026 09:03

Ditch the bloke, who is undermining your self esteem, and do not get into another relationship until you've done a shit ton of work on yourself to build confidence and boundaries. At the moment, you will be like a quivering Bambi to predatory men and risk being a succession of shit relationships where you're abused and belittled. Get some good therapy, take a break from shit men.

TheGoddessFrigg · 10/09/2026 09:13

Please please read the Lundy Bancroft book, and then dump this vile inadequate bullying freak. He is so so ugly inside- it doesn't matter what his outside is like.
I had a boyfriend like this - four years of hell that nearly destroyed me - and he said 'You'll never find another man' and I was thinking I dont actually CARE. Just as long as I dont have to be with YOU

dollyblue01 · 10/09/2026 09:14

If I was you , I’d bin him and hit the gym and work on getting the body you want for you and no one else, I was once slightly underweight and self conscious, believe me when I say 6 months in the gym gave me the most amazing figure , because I ate well slept better , just overall felt good, I’d got rid of my nasty ex and I’ve never looked back.
Don't change to please him, do it for you only.

2chocolateoranges · 10/09/2026 09:18

The more you tell us about him the worse he sounds.

why would you be with someone who criticises you, puts you down, makes you feel shit?

a partner is supposed to love you for who you are, loves everything about you and make you feel good about yourself.

you are 25 roughly the same age as my daughter and the advice I’d give her if she told me this was you are worth more, raise your bar and be by yourself for a while, work on your own self esteem.

BeEagerRubyBird · 10/09/2026 09:20

Just to add to the chorus, him saying he's your therapist is horrendous and really indicative of how he is trying to control your thoughts and mental state. Plus he knows that any therapist is going to tell you to run from this relationship.

Thank you all for your support, it really means a lot right now. I have tried to tell my partner I want someone who loves me the way I am and how he’s just moulding me to look like his ‘type’. He’ll just say that I won’t find anyone as good as him/other men will use me for sex or that he’s just trying to help me look better, he often says how he’s out of my league and acts like I’m lucky that he’s even considered me as a partner…I mentioned he told me to wear more makeup and he says it enhances your beauty and all girls need to wear makeup to look good. I’ve told him there’s no point doing my makeup and dressing up if I’m just sitting at home all day and he says I need to always look good and make effort.

I know if I was his type then he wouldn’t be so horrible and would probably move the earth for me, compliment me and be extra nice. I agree with what someone said about how I have low self esteem so it’s hard for me to believe I deserve better and everything negative he says about my appearance I believe. I wish I had the mental strength you guys have to realise my worth and leave him. I’m trying to work on myself and seek mental health advise although my partner dosent believe in mental health and says I don’t need therapy as he’s my therapist. I can see he’s a cloud of rain hanging over me, just trying to strengthen myself up to believe I do deserve better.

U are out of his league and he knows it !!!
He is treating u like this so u become a shell of yourself which looks like has already happened because he is frightened of losing you this is the only way he knows he can keep you by making u feel like your not worthy of anyone else THIS IS NOT LOVE THIS IS AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP!!
Please please not all is woman are bitchy u need to find the strength to leave this piece of shit and work on yourself .
Make some friends Nd get some support when U feel confident in yourself unwill then attract the right kind of people
Some men look for woman like yourself insecure and easy to abuse and manipulate
Big hugs 🤗
