That's fair enough @SilenceInside
A treadmill obviously is very useful for your lifestyle.

ShhhYouDontKnowMe · 06/09/2026 16:02

Have a heavy-duty one under my work desk (do check weight limits if you are hefty of build like me!). I use it far less than I should, no excuse really. Maybe this thread will give me a kick up the bum!

SilenceInside · 06/09/2026 16:03

@SomethingNewish I think my “lifestyle” is pretty common these days. Working and having childcare or other responsibilities is not exactly an odd set up.

@JustPlainStanfreyPock is there any chance you could summarise what’s being said on that podcast? I don’t think people believe that there aren’t additional benefits to walking or exercising outdoors. People are quite clearly outlining the reasons that prevent them or discourage them, where knowing the additional benefits won’t make a difference to that situation.

Debbi62 · 06/09/2026 16:06

My daughter bought one (33) she's fit and goes to the gym . She's only used it twice , it makes her feel dizzy apparently

FavouritePJs · 06/09/2026 16:06

I have had one for about 18 months and use it extensively, my husband said it would be another fad but it absolutely has not. I do about 18000 steps a day.

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 06/09/2026 16:09

@SilenceInside sorry, I'm dipping in and out and don't have time for an essay right now. There are actually 2 podcasts and well worth listening to, while people are walking maybe? 😁

One point especially sticks in my mind - the 10,000 number is completely arbitrary because someone thought it was easier to remember, and the Japanese character for 10,000 looks like a walking person.

I don't know why you are wanting to take offence at what I have said in my posts! I certainly never thought, said or implied there was anything odd about your lifestyle!

I have absolutely no issue with how you live your life or how you choose to exercise. As I said in my first post it is entirely a personal decision as to whether someone wants to use one of these treadmills. I choose not to but that doesn't mean to say I'm criticising anyone who does.

SilenceInside · 06/09/2026 16:12

@JustPlainStanfreyPock no worries, I’d assumed you’d listened to it already and might have some idea of what they were saying. Not an essay, a couple of key take aways perhaps.

Be very careful anyone out there who suffers with motion sickness. I got one. Used it once, stepped off it and vomited

not for me!

"Anyone"? Bit sweeping. I suffer from motion sickness and I have no problem at all with mine, and I can't really see why it would trigger motion sickness. Happy to be enlightened though.

SilenceInside · 06/09/2026 16:15

@SomethingNewish sorry if you think I had taken offence. I have not, but it’s hard to tell via a written medium.

You mean a treadmill? Confused

Nope. Like a previous poster, I go outside. Much healthier and fresher.

For many people it's not to replace outside, it's to reduce the amount of time sat stationary at a desk for work. Oddly, work don't approve of me going outside for fresh air when they're paying me to get stuff done.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 06/09/2026 16:18

I have one, but bought it just before the weather got super hot, so it has only been used a few times 😂. Fully intend to use it once the weather cools down properly

So condescending. How is it “much healthier”?!

Spiffingdarling88 · 06/09/2026 16:23

I have one but my cat puts me off because he keeps walking beside me and it's a tight squeeze with two!

Fantastic for rainy and cold days, when you don't want to go out.

Scruffley · 06/09/2026 16:25

Yes I recently bought one. Mainly to try and get my steps up a bit as we head into winter when I know it will be harder to do it outside due to the dark/weather.
I’ve used it a couple of times so far. It’s very heavy to move so I would ideally like somewhere I could leave it set up. All the reviews said how easy it was to store and then set up. I can only assume all these people must have been far stronger than me!
It’s harder to walk on it than to walk outside. I’ve found I really need to concentrate or it’s easy to lose focus and slip off. That might get easier with time.
That said, I’m glad I bought it. I don’t envision using it loads but on days when I’ve been working at a desk all day and it’s got dark, I can get some steps in easily in the evening on my own. I also get pretty sweaty so it must be quite a good work out if you go quite fast.

Agreed, I take anti sickness all the time and can get triggered by movement on a tv screen but never had it from a walking pad.

For the added benefits of walking outdoors, do listen to this
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0030p7k?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

Not what this thread is about - obviously it’s better to walk outdoors but for myriad reasons already outlined lots of people don’t have that luxury 🙄

Iamnotavicar · 06/09/2026 16:40

I had one and ended up selling it. It made me feel dizzy and a bit nauseous, but I do suffer from travel sickness and migraine. I really wanted it to work for me but when I got disoriented, it had to go

KeepDancing1 · 06/09/2026 17:15

MelonSorbet · 06/09/2026 12:52

🙄 Yes, it's called a pavement, takes me from right outside my house to anywhere I want to go.

Yes, they probably do make more sense for those of us with no pavement outside our homes, just a pothole-ridden lane with blind corners and hardly any streetlights, several muddy miles from anywhere we might want to go 🙄

ovals · 06/09/2026 17:31

I walk and run outside regularly but have a walking pad for office hours. It’s not a treadmill. It’s been highly beneficial for additional n.e.a.t activity and for when I can’t get out for whatever reason. If using one stops you being a nitpicking twat, it’s a no brainer.

StripedPillowcase · 06/09/2026 17:47

PPs who have walking pad, please can you say what make they are? I've been looking for ages but the reviews are so mixed, it's impossible!
For info, I'm on the heavier side but short so I don't have a very long stride, and I live in a flat so would need something that wouldn't disturb the downstairs neighbours!

PeanutCat1 · 06/09/2026 17:49

I’ve got one and went for one you can run on, has been well worth the money for me, I used it for couchto5k type programme whilst loosing weight.

Have you noticed health benefits from it?

TurkishShepherd · 06/09/2026 18:24

I ummed and ahhed last black Friday but defo getting one this year for using under my desk during lengthy teams presentations, IN ADDITION to regular walks outside 🙄

If I recall, it's worth checking belt width - some can be skinny. I would also appreciate some recommendations for makes which are relatively quiet - anyone got a Urevo?
