Does he fancy me?

There’s a guy I really fancy and I am sure he likes me too, but as he is quite a bit younger than me I am feeling extra cautious about reading the signs as I don’t want to make a complete tit of myself. I am worried in case he doesn’t fancy me but knows I fancy him and is taking the piss (I don’t think he is, but this doubt is stopping me from making the first move).

Would you say he fancies me based on the following:

We have had a lot of eye contact and smile at each other every time.

I have caught him looking at me and quickly looking away.

I asked him for help with something silly a few days ago (I didn’t need help really!) not exactly related to his role and he obliged and we had good eye contact and smiles again for the short time this happened.

A couple of days after this, I caught him looking at me from a distance and we smiled et each other and he turned around and I could see his reflection in the window - he had a massive grin on his face. He later stood by the window smiling at me while I stood outside packing my bag.

Last night I was about to leave the shop and he stood in quite a prominent position and we looked in each other’s eyes and I said bye to him and gave him a smile and he did the same back, then closed his eyes, then opened them looking right into my eyes again while smiling. No one has ever done this to me, and I’m a bit confused as to what it means, but it looked sexy and cute. What does this mean???

I should add that he seems a little shy, also that I often have my children with me when I visit the shop which obviously creates a bit of a barrier potentially to any flirting.

So, do you think he fancies me?

I can’t reply to everyone individually - but to clarify:

He is a Security Guard.
There is probably around - 10-15 year age gap.
I have never posted about anything similar before.

Nobody here knows whether he fancies you or not.

I think you're reading an awful lot into what sounds to me like a very ordinary customer interaction that a security guard / shop assistant / waiter would have with a customer. Your attraction to him is entirely physical; you know literally nothing about him or his personality or whether he is 'shy' or not. He is a good-looking man who smiled at you.

If you want to ask him out, ask him out. But you aren't going to be able to tell if he fancies you or not by trying to analyse the length of the time he holds eye contact for. You're only going to know if you ask him.

I’m sure this is what cats do when they like their owners 😂

OP, I think you bath need to stop Atari mg at each other. It feels a bit creepy.

I know what you mean! Maybe I should be scared 🤣

He fancies you but that could mean
he wants a shag it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s looking for a relationship. And if there’s a 10 yr gap it’s unlikely you will be wanting the same things . If you’re looking for casual ask him out. Otherwise I’d leave it

Aegyo · 04/09/2026 15:27

I just Google searches the eye closing and smiling thing, and this is what came back:

A man smiling, closing his eyes, opening them, and smiling again is usually a friendly, playful, or polite gesture.

What This Might Mean

  • Friendly acknowledgment: He is just saying hello or acknowledging you in a warm way.
  • Playfulness: Closing his eyes for a second can add a flirty or lighthearted vibe to the smile.
  • Daydreaming or savoring the moment: Sometimes people close their eyes briefly when they feel a sudden happy emotion.
  • Awkwardness: He might feel a little nervous and is reacting by closing his eyes to reset before looking at you again.

Yes, I can imagine there might be a bit of a variation in what we want and expect from one another. He’s so hot though that I think I’d be happy to just settle for a shag 🤪

Artificial intelligence isn't needed, never lower yourself to analysing a man.
You sound like you're obsessing over this man who is doing his job, forget him.

OK, well there's someone on here who has posted fairly recently about a strikingly similar situation -- smiley staff member (can't remember if she specified a security guard, but the context was certainly that he was frequently stationed by the self-check out) in a shop the OP frequented regularly, and whom she hoped fancied her. Maybe if you search you will find the post.

From what I remember the response on here ranged from 'Ordinarily attentive' to 'You're making him nervous with all the staring' to 'He thinks you're a shoplifter checking him out'.

You know if you flipped the sexes here, this would feel quite unpleasant and potentially rather predatory. Older customer fantasising about a shag with a much younger woman working in a shop he frequents, when all she's done is smiled and made eye contact while doing her job.

For what it's worth - if a man fancies you, it's not usually your eyes he's staring at.

Seriously, you need to get a grip. You cannot determine whether someone wants to go out with you based on them closing their eyes during a smile; you're being ridiculous.

You're talking about him as if this a done deal. Stop being weird about this. You sound really obsessed now and it's a bit strange.

DeterminedRat · 04/09/2026 15:51

Don't hit on people when they are work. He can't walk away or tell you to fuck off, it puts them in a really awkward position where they might feel obliged to be nice because you are the customer and they are staff.

MxCactus · 04/09/2026 15:57

Based on this, I don't think he fancies you. It sounds like you keep looking at him and he's smiling back...

When a man fancies you they tend to repeatedly make excuses to talk to you/tell you you're pretty/follow you around whenever they see you. It doesn't sound like he's doing that from your description

Still, he might be flattered if you make it clear you fancy him... So I don't think it's a complete lost cause. If try flirting with him to test his response before outright asking him out!

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 04/09/2026 16:04

Seriously this sounds like one of my diary entries from when I was about 13 😂

Get your friend to ask him out for you?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/09/2026 16:04

I think he does but that said there’s a guy working in my local Aldi who’s quite good looking but also extremely helpful and does his job very well. Yesterday he winked and me and not in a fancying way more of a being friendly to a customer way.

tanoshi · 04/09/2026 16:54

Ask him if he fancies a coffee. No one is going to die!

KeptWomanSummer · 04/09/2026 17:56

Absolute tween/teen role playing here.

Wishimaywishimight · 04/09/2026 18:01

Reminds me of an episode of Friends where Phoebe says to Rachel "Not everything has to go as far as eye contact" 😆

PlumColouredBedding · 04/09/2026 18:14

This reminds me of a very specific phrase I once heard on here and only here...

Eye fucking 👀

AbacusCat · 04/09/2026 18:29

No-one here can possibly say whether he fancies you or not.

Ask him if he'd like to meet up for a drink some time - his response will answer your question. If he's not interested at least you'll know and can move on.
