How much sleep do you get a night, and…

Is it enough?

if you happen to be a working mum, with a 9-5 job (or there about) I’m particularly interested.

i get 7-8 hours a night (typically go to be around 11pm and up at 7am. I usually sleep quite solidly but mornings are PAINFUL!

I can’t seem to wake up properly at all, my husband basically has to drag the covers off of me but I promise I don’t do it on purpose, I just fall back into a deep sleep without realising it!

I think I need about 9 hours a night, or maybe I would be fine with 8 if I didn’t have to get up until say, 8am. it’s like my body is just not programmed for ‘awake’ at 7am 🙈

it’s hard to go to bed any earlier as there’s dinner/washing/club runs/kids showers and beds etc to organise.

I think getting 7-8 hours solid sleep a night SHOULD be enough….bit it doesn’t seem to be??

i have 2 DC (10 and 12) who were terrible sleepers. DC1 was an hourly waker until about 1yo and didn’t sleep through the night until she was 6 so I used to be well used to broken/short sleep and seemed to manage much better in the morning than I do now 🫣

I think my natural wake up time is around 8.30-9am. Went to bed about 11.30pm and woke this morning about 8.45am although I did need to go for a pee at 7am.

I also wake up with the most vivid dreams at 7am when my alarm goes off - must be the stage of sleep I’m in

I do often wear my Garmin to bed but sometimes it annoys me so I take it off. This was last weekend, I actually set my alarm for 8am as we were away for the night and need to be up and organised in the morning , so not sure what time I would have woke up naturally!

This is a usual night for me. My alarm is set for 5.25 every morning as I need to start little one's routine of feed, medications etc but I find I now wake before it goes off. Today I was able to get out for a few hours on my own so I went for a walk as the weather was glorious, I managed 10 miles. I think I have become accustomed to getting 4-5 hours a night as I usually feel ok on it.

I have 6 hours a night average and am kind of fine on it. I do sometimes nap if I feel tired tho. I think I’ll die young from not sleeping enough but have just never really needed much

mondaytosunday · 05/09/2026 23:13

7 hours or so? I go to bed around 1am but I’m at an age that I get up at least once a night if not thrice. But I can usually fall back to sleep, but if it’s after 6am and light out I usually just start scrolling. My DD needs at least nine hours, but she also has MS and fatigue is ever present.

lordbaddingham · 05/09/2026 23:27

I wake up at 3am every day so get about five hours. Menopause is a killer.

henlake7 · 06/09/2026 00:10

Ideally 7 hrs but I'm not a great sleeper so sometimes I'm down to 5.
Also I work 2 night shifts a week and then I only get 1-2 hrs a day (Its not unusual for me to go 2 and a half days without sleeping when I'm working, but I feel like total shit if I do!).

blackheartsgirl · 06/09/2026 00:27

I get between 4 and 6 hours a night and have been that way for years. In fact I’ve never really slept well even as a kid I used to struggle with sleep

it’s fine for me, infact if I sleep later I feel awful

TheImpOfThePerverse2026 · 06/09/2026 00:42

I'm like Margaret Thatcher, 4-5 hours if I'm lucky. So jealous of people who get 8 hours.

When I have guests I can't believe they sleep until 8-9am, how the heck do they do that??

patooties · 06/09/2026 00:46

I’ve stopped wearing my sleep tracker because my average over a year was three hours and 42 minutes of broken sleep.

my children are 18 and 16. The youngest did not sleep for more than a 2 hour stretch until he was 7.

managingexpectations · 06/09/2026 01:50

No kids but average 4-5 hrs per night. It’s horrendous I’m permanently shattered. I work shifts so don’t have a regular sleep schedule.
very occasionally I manage to get 6/7 hours maybe every 2 months or so

Morepositivemum · 06/09/2026 01:57

I’m 46, 4 kids, work retail so half eight to six, 9 to 7 or twelve to half nine and I’m generally in bed for eleven have to be up by half six if I want to have a shower and then bring out the dog before we all get moving. I work three days during the week then Saturday and Sunday.

I wake up nightly between 1 and 3. I slept brilliantly when I put screens away at 7 in the evening and didn’t drink tea but I’ve fallen back so here I am! I have black circles the size of craters and don’t see my bed enough!!

BCBird · 06/09/2026 03:47

6 if I'm lucky. It's often less.

Peachee · 06/09/2026 04:43

Effing 0 at this point!

PearlsTeapot · 06/09/2026 16:55

This thread has opened my eyes, I sleep much more than literally anyone else on here! My usual 10/11 hours. I am going to try waking earlier because I’m always tired.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 06/09/2026 17:08

I'm a high sleep needs person! I go to sleep around 10 and wake around 6:30 during the week.

InfoSecInTheCity · 06/09/2026 17:25

I average 5.5 hours according to my watch which now congratulates me if I make 5.5hrs or higher. I don’t get enough, I should sleep more but I’ve become used to my routine and can manage well on the little I get so I haven’t done anything to address it.

1 DD who’s now 12 so no excuses there. I do have a full time senior leadership type job which requires long hours.
