How much sleep do you get a night, and…

Is it enough?

if you happen to be a working mum, with a 9-5 job (or there about) I’m particularly interested.

i get 7-8 hours a night (typically go to be around 11pm and up at 7am. I usually sleep quite solidly but mornings are PAINFUL!

I can’t seem to wake up properly at all, my husband basically has to drag the covers off of me but I promise I don’t do it on purpose, I just fall back into a deep sleep without realising it!

I think I need about 9 hours a night, or maybe I would be fine with 8 if I didn’t have to get up until say, 8am. it’s like my body is just not programmed for ‘awake’ at 7am 🙈

it’s hard to go to bed any earlier as there’s dinner/washing/club runs/kids showers and beds etc to organise.

I think getting 7-8 hours solid sleep a night SHOULD be enough….bit it doesn’t seem to be??

i have 2 DC (10 and 12) who were terrible sleepers. DC1 was an hourly waker until about 1yo and didn’t sleep through the night until she was 6 so I used to be well used to broken/short sleep and seemed to manage much better in the morning than I do now 🫣

Im in awe.

I get at least 8 hrs every night and a sofa nap of 1.5 in the pm.

Always needed loads of kip. Few autoimmune ailments prob accounts for that.

Thebinisrightthere · 03/09/2026 20:31

I get around 7-8 hours a night & usually wake up refreshed at about 7.45am. I do wake up once or twice in tge night

ShitFacedShakespeare · 03/09/2026 20:32

6 hours and I feel great although I can function quite well on 4.

Around 4 hours a night - 1am to 5am - and Im bright as a button and annoyingly cheerful when I start work at 5;30

Last night I had the joy of waking 3 times in that short time as well

I get home from work, walk the dog for a couple of miles, then finally sit down at around 11.30am - and will nod off for 30 mins. Actually truth be told if I sit for any length of time I will fall asleep

62, post meno, no kids, just always been a bad sleeper

If I went to bed at 10 or 11, Id be wide awake at 2 or 3am, unable to get back to sleep and then I will feel like shit even though I have had the same amount of hours sleep

Oooonoooot · 03/09/2026 20:37

I feel very fortunate if I sleep for 4 hours without waking up for a pee ,dog restless etc . I cannot go back to sleep, brain racing . I get my best sleep from about 6am onwards unless I have to get up for work at 5.15am for a 12 hour shift…that day is absolutely awful 😞
I have never been a morning person and really struggled when my children were school age! Thankfully I don’t need to worry about that now,all grown up.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/09/2026 20:45

I’m amazed at how little sleep some people are getting and still feel good/function well. I’d be dragging myself through the day on 4 hours sleep. It’s interesting how needs can differ so much between individuals.

TooOrangey · 03/09/2026 20:48

About 8 hours. I don’t generally wake up
until about 8. I never need to go to the loo in the night, even if I wake up.

I don’t need 8 hours. I think 6 is about the right amount for me.

Blushingm · 03/09/2026 21:18

I go to bed about 11 and am awake from about 3. No reason as don’t need to be up til 7. I wake with a churning/nervous stomach and my heart racing

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/09/2026 21:39

We go to bed too late, usually lights off at 11 ish. I get up at 6.15 every day, usually feel bright in the morning as I am a definite early bird. However at 4/5/6pm I am often very tired and often have a short nap, otherwise I fall asleep watching tv which then leaves me feeling really irritable and uncomfortable. I should just go to bed when I’m tired watching tv but dh and I literally get an hour after the dc go to bed and it feels mean, plus her wake me stomping around coming to bed 🤣

SlugJam · 03/09/2026 21:41

2-4 hours. I have a disabled child who requires round the clock care.

I get 2-4 hours and don’t function well at all. Sadly I don’t have any choice!

Seawolves · 03/09/2026 21:44

4 - 5 hours, quite often broken by a sats monitor alarming for low O2 or heart rate or a feed pump that have mythical air in the line. I live for the two nights a month he goes to the hospice and I can sleep for 7 or 8 hours 😀

Littlegreywolfcub · 03/09/2026 21:46

I get around 6 or 7 hours (on a good night). Never 8 - but would Love 8 hours!

Pretty much always wake up at 4 or 4.30am. [shrugs] but usually in bed by 9pm.

Myremoteislost · 03/09/2026 21:47

I get around 8 hours good sleep a night. I am permanently exhausted though.

Have you had full bloods done recently? The heart racing could be due to a thyroid issue, as this happened to a friend and at first GP prescribed her anti-anxiety meds...but after bloods came back it turned out she needed thyroid medication.

I’m a 10.30 to 7. Annoyingly I am physically incapable of having a lie in. Even if I have a late weekend PING eyes open at 7am.
Without getting all mumsnetty, your 12 year old should be showering and bedding down without much assistance now. And with two of you sharing the rest you could definitely get in bed for 10. Why not try it and see how you feel?

Edited

Woah woah woah, lying down with my 12yo is one of the best parts of my day 🤣. I feel really lucky she still wants a cuddle and chat, she’s just turned 12 and just stared secondary school, before long I know she’ll not want/need us doing bedtime. Plus, it means I know she’s settled and lights are out. Now, you COULD argue she just needs to go to bed earlier which is valid

Are you tired in the day? Or is it just the transition from fast asleep to ‘awake and functioning’ that you struggle with?

I actually feel ok during the day, it’s just the waking up that’s the problem!!

Incredibly I went to bed at 11 last night and woke up at 8.35! That’s the longest I have slept in for actual years! I feel like a new woman.

Yes, mine are 12 and 11 and I’d give up lots of things in the evening before I gave up our bedtime chats and cuddles! I’ve got years ahead of me of them sorting themselves out for bed, I’m clinging on to the nice bits for as long as I can!

HappyKatieA · 05/09/2026 10:30

I’ve found it really useful to use the Sleep feature on my IWatch, it tells you a sleep score and you can see the quality.
I’ve always loved my sleep, but found when I was mid 30-‘s to 40’s that I didn’t feel I was getting enough. I bet the quality was lower as I sleep much less now but have a high sleep score and feel rested.

Magenta953 · 05/09/2026 10:41

I think it’s not just about how much sleep your body needs but also when your body wants to go to sleep. I need about 9-10 hours of sleep but not only that, my body naturally wants to go to sleep around midnight and wake up around 9-10. So it’s often useless for me to try and go to bed really early as I just don’t sleep, end up tossing and turning for ages. It’s so annoying as I know I need lots of sleep and I try to facilitate it but it’s like my body is just not set up for modern life!! So much of my life I feel exhausted from having to get up too early for work. When I can lie in and catch up at weekends I feel much better and I could easily every day fall back to sleep after the early alarm. It also means I spend the day trying to physically wear myself out (not easy with a very sedentary job!) so I have a chance of getting to sleep before midnight. I really wish I wasn’t like this but I just am. I would have been great at staying awake in the early part of the night to keep the cave safe from predators!!

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 05/09/2026 10:43

Between 6 and 8 hours a night, but sometimes I'll wake in the night for about an hour. It's enough but I always tired by 9pm and wanting to go to bed. I get up between 5.45 and 6.

I struggle to sleep - it's never really been much different, apart from the older I am, the less sleep I seem to have.

I'll either fall asleep and wake up in the early morning time and not be able to go back to sleep again (I find this is the worst for me) or struggle to fall asleep until around 1am.

I don't have more than 5 hours sleep each night.

Fortunately I don't get grumpy due to lack of sleep, so I'm lucky in that respect.

DandelionClockSeeds · 05/09/2026 10:54

I had a DS1 who sounds like your oldest.
So, from aged 30 ive not really slept properly...
Bed around 10, light out half past. Alarm set for 6.15. BUT im usually awake solidly 3-4, then see various times between then and the alarm.

Was on holiday recently. Most horribly hard mattress (and i like firm mattresses) and I was out like a light a solid 9 hours a night. It was bliss. Now, why isnt that replicated in my (comfy) bed at home? Im tired again after a week at work.

CadiFfan · 05/09/2026 11:35

I wake up 5:30-6am every morning.

i tend to do to bed 8:30-9:30

i get 7-8 hours each night

last night i was in bed 8pm with my book and a cuppa
