Only just learnt the Bayeux Tapestry is actually an embroidery

I saw a comment on social media where someone pointed out that the Bayeux Tapestry is actually an embroidery. So it's the Bayeux Embroidery.

Apparently we’ve all just agreed to call it the wrong thing for nearly a thousand years and carry on. Life is a lie. Next someone will tell me Hadrian’s Wall is a fence and Stonehenge is technically a prehistoric gazebo.

It should be Camembert, going by the packed lunches i got on French exchanges in Bayeux.

I was in a church in... probably Battle, but I've been around a bit the last few days in south Kent, so it might be another one. Anyway, they have done a few extra panels, which have things like Gyva's marriage. Might have been a millenium project.

I sort of knew this somewhere in my fuddled brain. Surely it can't be a tapestry the way it is presented FLAT in London, and not hanging agaibst a wall.

Its all part of life's rich embroidery.

Something like this happened when one University (Leeds) 'borrowed' some paintings from another (can't remember, maybe Sheffield) then refused to return them on the grounds that the academic in charge of them (either artist or owner, can't remember) had been an academic in Leeds.

On a side note, did you know that there are 93 willys in the Bayeux Tapestry. Just thought I would lower the tone.😁

There’s a school of thought that suggests it wasn’t created in Bayeaux at all, but in England and they nicked it.

Yes, that's been said upthread a couple of times - Canterbury, apparently. That's also what the King referred to.

It might be 94. It's a point of academic debate by some. Most of them are gigs and houses, though. Or possibly sword scabbards, in the case of the debated one.

For anyone who is interested and can’t get a ticket to view at the British Museum, there is a copy of the Bayeaux Tapestry in Reading Museum. It was created by a group of ladies from the midlands in 1880 and it took them about a year to do. They think that the original took about the same time.
i saw it the other week and it’s really good. Each woman embroidered her name under the panel she had finished.

I think that it has to be lying flat, for conservation reasons.

Maybe we should have a MN tapestry....with a massive salad, CFs, and DH doing hobbies.

Maybe the words "grim" and "you do you" stitched around the edges.

They need to lead all the marketing for the exhibition with this

Not according to Mr Google! A tapestry is created on a loom, creating the image and the fabric are created at the same time, an embroidery is worked into an existing piece of fabric.. I didn't know that until I looked it up!

Only 93 boabies have been catalogued so far, 'they' think there are more but it takes a while to document them all 😆.
