Big boss is away on a very fancy sailing holiday

We work for a school trust. The CEO is on her holidays, a very luxury sailing trip in some beautiful places, good for her, but for some reason she's sending regular photos to our work WhatsApp group, the one that's generally only used to wish people Happy Birthday, warn about traffic issues on the route in or say welcome/goodbye when people come and go.

No one else has shared holiday pics all summer. The first message said somehting like for those who can't wait until we get back...

Is is me or is this very odd and quite tone deaf?

do you think maybe she’s muddled her WA groups?

It is strange to share holiday pictures on that sort of social group, senior leadership or otherwise.

No I'm not envious, I've done that kind of holiday and wouldn't do it again, but I wonder how some of the low paid admin staff I manage are feeling ahead of their return to work.

In my experience the sort of empathy and concern for others you are displaying is not something academy CEO’s are burdened with.

askmehwIkw · Yesterday 14:24

I think that's odd and annoying anyway because its a work group. Your holiday is your private life. Other peoples holiday photos are boring at the best of times. Sending your boring photos about your personal holiday to a work group is inappropriate. It's why Whatsapp groups are annoying because people abuse them with junk out of line with the purpose of the group. then on top of that if its very expensive luxury others cant afford its tone deaf. Someone should tell her it would be better if this group was kept for work messages only to avoid mixing of personal material and risking work messages getting lost but it requires someone who knows her well enough and willing to be direct which can be tricky she is the ultimate boss.

*Sorry for double post page got stuck in spinning wheel of death I think due to adverts crashing so didn't realise it had posted.

thegrumblingkitten · Yesterday 14:36

It's incredibly tone deaf, especially if the senior leadership team is as cliquey, 'superior' and out of touch as ours is.

I feel for your school's staff.

I’d find it a bit odd too. Sharing the occasional holiday photo is one thing, but regularly posting luxury holiday snaps in a work group can come across as tone deaf, especially when nobody else does it.

Cotopaxi · Yesterday 14:39

Big Highly-Paid Boss On A Big Expensive Fancy Sailing Holiday is the only person in the entire group to share their holiday photos.

What a show-off.

That is all.

WindsurfingDreams · Yesterday 14:43

It's unprofessional and tone deaf.

Do you take your own advice?

How exactly does a forum like MNs even exist if everyone minded their own business 🤔

Most posters start threads about their own business. Not other people’s.

canuckup · Yesterday 14:54

She probably doesn't realise she's doing it

If she does, she's utterly tone death

Vallies · Yesterday 15:20

RosasDanceRosas · Yesterday 13:01

Yes, I think I'd assume it was a mistake, or that someone had asked to see them. It wouldn't bother me in the least either way. Anyone who is finding it bothersome can mute the group for the duration.

It's not a mistake, she's doing it everyday.

Of course posting pics of an expensive holiday is tone deaf! We’re in a cost of living crisis.

Of course that went over your head 😆

topcat2014 · Yesterday 15:27

We all get to make life choices, we are not just allotted a life.

I was sacked from a Trust, but even so this is a bleak outlook on life which will only harm your own wellbeing.

The economy is actually improving. Train drivers are doing well.

There will always be people better and worse off than us

Vallies · Yesterday 15:32

I think she's perfectly entitled to have a nice holiday, I think most staff would show polite interest in a few snaps, or ask interested questions when we're back at work.

I think the CEO bombarding staff she knows have saved all year for a caravan holiday, and whose salaries she sets, with daily updates is not appropriate.

You are right OP, it’s tone deaf and unempathic, exactly the sort of person in a role like hers!

Marellain · Yesterday 15:33

Wealthy people need to hide their enjoyment of their good fortune lest the growly embittered masses turn nasty, or get miffed.

this is how the lowest person in the room runs the whole show. Race to the bottom.

podgeball · Yesterday 15:37

Goodmorningeveryone26 · Yesterday 13:11

I think everyone is being a bit obtuse, OP. I can see your point

I agree. But it’s quite a typical Mumsnet response so I’m not surprised. Of course you must be jelous, OP, rather than expecting your highly paid boss to read the room during a CoL crisis…

Marellain · Yesterday 15:41

It’s simply not fair or true to assume that everyone suffers from jealousy. There are plenty of generous hearted souls who are not troubled by seeing financial differences.

Don’t be so ridiculous. It’s not about a race to the bottom. It’s about knowing full well that a lot of her staff could never afford a holiday like hers however hard they work so sending loads of unsolicited holiday photos is probably not a good idea.

how silly. sharing family holiday photos on a work related whatsapp group is simply inappropriate.

Gardenhabit · Yesterday 15:46

I think the only people who are ever going to be honestly happy about your increased success and wealth are your parents. I think you need to be careful with this stuff- people can be very envious, I’ve learned the hard way.

Marellain · Yesterday 15:46

Silly and ridiculous. I get the idea of the kind of types that can’t bear to see holiday photos from well off people. Okaay!

SilverTotoro · Yesterday 15:51

Of course it’s odd and comes across as a bit braggy if no one else on the group does this. To those saying why can’t you just be happy for someone - if others on the group are likely to be struggling to afford a holiday for their families of course it’s insensitive to post pictures of an extremely expensive trip!

On a side note does anyone actually want to see other peoples holiday snaps? I never show anyone ours unless they specifically ask as I think it’s boring.

Federica1864 · Yesterday 15:53

Seems a bit braggy. I’d never post luxury holiday snaps online or in a mixed chat group. My boss does this and sometimes I want to scream “check your privilege and stop showing off”. She takes every opportunity to remind us her kids go to private schools and “very academic” ones at that. She just comes across like a bit of a dick tbh.
