Big boss is away on a very fancy sailing holiday

We work for a school trust. The CEO is on her holidays, a very luxury sailing trip in some beautiful places, good for her, but for some reason she's sending regular photos to our work WhatsApp group, the one that's generally only used to wish people Happy Birthday, warn about traffic issues on the route in or say welcome/goodbye when people come and go.

No one else has shared holiday pics all summer. The first message said somehting like for those who can't wait until we get back...

Is is me or is this very odd and quite tone deaf?

It's in bad taste and it is tone deaf, I agree with you OP

Kisskiss · Yesterday 13:24

Put it this way, consider the audience. If it’s a group chat where you frequently share holiday pics and people go on similar sorts of holidays? Fine. Do t tell me it’s not even a little weird if you are fully aware that most people in the group would never be able to afford a trip like that

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · Yesterday 13:29

@ValliesEurgh. Tone deaf yes, but also narcissistic - they know they have a captive audience of people obliged to respond encouragingly due to the hierarchy. I worked at a hedge fund and the deranged CEO would do this, posting pics of him spear fishing from his yacht. I remember a sycophant replying “wow what a big fish congratulations” 🤣

I think everyone is being a bit obtuse, OP. I can see your point

I agree. It’s vulgar to show off to people that work hard for you and earn 1/10th your salary.

Marieb19 · Yesterday 13:31

Inappropriate and tone deaf. I hope no one responds.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Yesterday 13:35

I'm a chief exec and I think this is tone deaf.

BringBackCatsEyes · Yesterday 13:38

Yeah….post on the “holidays” group not the general chit chat group. You’d think the CEO would have some self-awareness.

beigepaints · Yesterday 13:40

Yes, it’s odd

Of course they are, it’s MNs!

Yes it’s weird. And it’s weird that anyone thinks it’s not weird!

They do, but are just being contrary & enjoy telling the OP off for being envious etc.

Cushionsy · Yesterday 13:45

It is weird and needy to send holiday photos to your colleagues regardless of the situation. The situation you describe makes it even more naff and I agree it is tone deaf.

Minasama · Yesterday 13:49

Extraordinarily tone deaf, but there’s likely not much you can do about it.
I have friends who go to northern England or Wales in caravans on their holidays. I no longer post my holiday snaps on social for this reason. I would absolutely hate them to feel any wish that they could be there or enjoy their holiday in any way less on account of my pictures and I would feel extremely awkward if they mentioned how lovely some of these places look.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · Yesterday 13:50

Agree with those saying some posters are being deliberately obtuse

  1. It's crass
  2. It's a WhatsApp group for work, it's not a general chat - a brief birthday message is one thing, inviting chat about holidays is another

I would roll my eyes too OP

And I would bet that if any TA had put their holiday pics up some member of SLT would remind them it should be kept to work focused issues

WimpoleHat · Yesterday 13:52

Why have a downer on a successful woman who earns more than you?

Because she’s showing off - and in an inappropriate forum. One thing on her personal social media page; another thing entirely on a work group chat.

Minasama · Yesterday 13:53

Whatmesurelynot · Yesterday 13:03

Well no but your boss? Bit different than a friend I think it shows poor judgement from big boss.

Fully agree. I’ve never worked anywhere where the boss posted their holiday photos (albeit I’ve never worked anywhere where you were allowed to use personal devices for work communication.)

PrincessofWills · Yesterday 13:54

Vallies · Yesterday 12:44

The holiday will have cost some of the staffs' entire salary.

And why is that anything to do with you?

HoppityBun · Yesterday 13:54

Bluenotgreen · Yesterday 12:54

You are coming across as envious of this woman. Just ignore it and mind your own business.

Not to me, she’s not.

Do you take your own advice?

How exactly does a forum like MNs even exist if everyone minded their own business 🤔

Katalica · Yesterday 13:56

Ugh! She sounds like an insufferable wanker and is likely to be a shit boss, given that she’s enjoying lording her good luck over the plebs who have to work for her!

I’d pretend not to have seen the pics and feign total ignorance of her holiday.

So? Is she not allowed to have a nice holiday? You do sound jealous.

Get on the chat and say something nice about her holiday FFS.

Whatmesurelynot · Yesterday 14:02

Op go on there and say you will get the kids to draw pictures of her yacht using the pencils you bought them 😂😂😂

beigepaints · Yesterday 14:02

@risingup

Can you explain how you read the OP & deduced that the OP thinks her boss should not be allowed a nice holiday?

Its primary school comprehension skills….

askmehwIkw · Yesterday 14:05

I think that's odd and annoying anyway because its a work group. Your holiday is your private life. Other peoples holiday photos are boring at the best of times. Sending your boring photos about your personal holiday to a work group is inappropriate. It's why Whatsapp groups are annoying because people abuse them with junk out of line with the purpose of the group. then on top of that if its very expensive luxury others cant afford its tone deaf. Someone should tell her it would be better if this group was kept for work messages only to avoid mixing of personal material and risking work messages getting lost but it requires someone who knows her well enough and willing to be direct which can be tricking if she is the ultimate boss.
