I won't be able to heat my home..

Due to the war in Iran, I simply cannot afford to heat my home.

I'm on heating oil, and since day 1 of the war, oil prices have risen sharply. I've just done a quick calculation, and to fill my tank today it will cost £550, the day before it all kicked off it would have cost £260. I'm just hoping and praying we have a mild winter. 🙏 Just venting.

Did you ever write to Viz with this advice? It looks familiar.🤣🤣

Ihateboris, re portable electric convector heater, on a setting of 750w it’s estimated to cost just under 21p per hour, but there are lots of variables to consider, including room-size. I heat my sitting room with the 750w setting on half for about an hour then have to turn the heater off as it’s warm enough by then. I never need to raise the setting above that, but my room isn’t huge. It’s not the same as having central heating, obviously, so it’s a case of heating the room you’re in, not the whole house.
I think I’ll be tempted to use my oil central heating when it gets colder, but for now I’m trying to eke the oil out as long as possible in the hope of the price going down🤞🏼

For anyone interested in individual extra cost. North Scotland. In comparison to previous prices, since trumps war I’ve paid over £550 more 🥲 And not used over (so called) summer except for water, though the house needed it really.

Check if your electricity supplier is doing a deal on them. We got mine free from Octopus last winter and it’s brilliant.

I also recommend putting up a long thick curtain on the inside of your front door. It helps to stop the draughts.

All electric heating costs the same to run in the sense that a 2kw heater whether it is oil filled, convector or fan will cost 2kw per hour (assuming it to be on max).

The difference is how long the room holds the heat or whether you ho for something that heats you rather than the air.

If you hour house is draughty or you have an external door into your main living area, you'll lose the heat from a fan heater almost instantly for example.

How much you feel the benefits also depends on room size etc.

So you spend £10k and reduced monthly bills by £150. So on that basis, you’ll break even in 5.5 years which isn’t bad.

Do the solar panels come with a warranty should there be damage over the years? What’s the lifespan on them?

I would imagine it’s only worth it for people who are guaranteed to spend 10+ years in the property.

Ours are guaranteed for 10 years together with the battery. After that you can expect a drop in performance that's what different people from different companies said - or something like that.

We also have added them to the home insurance.

If it's relevant, we are not planning to move... DC are older teenagers/ young adults. One has come back after university and is living with us for the foreseeable. She's hybrid working. So again, a good way of keeping costs down over the winter.
