I won't be able to heat my home..

Due to the war in Iran, I simply cannot afford to heat my home.

I'm on heating oil, and since day 1 of the war, oil prices have risen sharply. I've just done a quick calculation, and to fill my tank today it will cost £550, the day before it all kicked off it would have cost £260. I'm just hoping and praying we have a mild winter. 🙏 Just venting.

The good news is the weather is looking pretty mild out to mid October.

I don't turn my heating on until the day night average is below 10C.

Last year where I was that wasn't until about mid November.

It really does depend where in the country you are doesn’t it though. In normal years (ie before this latest mega price rise) I still used my heating in the summer months, albeit mainly to take the chill off early morning and evening. I rarely hear politicians refer to the cross country differences when potential support is being discussed. I hope October will be mild up here too!!!

I can assure you in NE England it’s not warm etc head further north into Scotland and it will be even cooler.

Yes northern Scotland dweller here - plus generally the east is colder as I bet it is for you!

For a single person who is debt free and in full time employment with no dependents not to get a credit card anywhere for just £500 because of your “outgoings”…. I have to ask… what the heck are you outgoings?!

But all those are normal expenses

and you said you didn’t have a credit card and had zero debt

I'm paying off a historical PayPal credit bill. Also, I'd prefer not to take any further credit out as I'm only eligible for very high interest rate cards. I don't want to rob Peter to pay Paul. I'm just going to do as many great Mumsnetters have suggested..heated blankets etc. Thank you 😊

Ok so when you said up thread you have no debts
you do actually have debts
had I known that I wouldn’t have suggested a CC

Ihateboris · 27/09/2026 16:37

Just wanted to thank all you wonderful mumsnetters who have suggested various ways to keep warm this winter! Very much appreciated x

Boiler juice have quoted me £596 for 500L today. It was £268 last September. I could cry 😢

It’s £546 today @Ihateboris and on the decline. Fingers crossed it continues on that trajectory

And it’s continuing to fall £544 today

Xannygum · 07/10/2026 06:54

It is falling every day. Today it’s £540. I wouldn’t worry @Ihateboris . If it continues on this trajectory then prices will continue to fall quite sharply
