Another good one from Heather Cox Richardson today:

September 21, 2026 (Monday)

On September 18, while White House chief of staff Susie Wiles was out of town, Trump suddenly announced he was banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House. “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” Trump wrote. “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, whose deep unpopularity means he is likely eager to curry favor with Trump, promptly posted that the Defense Department fully supported Trump’s decision. He claimed that the same outlets, which recently have reported that Russia has been helping Iran target U.S. troops and that the Defense Department has not fully accounted for deaths of servicemembers or destruction of U.S. military bases, “endangered our troops with false stories, leaks, and trafficked in fiction and lies about the President, our Warriors, and their mission.”

The next day, reporters from those outlets attempting to enter the White House complex where the press facilities are located were denied entry, and Secret Service agents confiscated their press badges.

On Sunday afternoon, Trump posted an image of three full black trash bags, labeled “CNN,” “MSNBC,” and “Politico,” outside the White House.

This morning, after the weekend’s backlash, he posted: “The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish. It is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America. It is corrupt, purposeful, pervasive, fully coordinated, and totally out of control. It is a threat to our National Security, and must be stopped, NOW!”

There’s that “national security” claim again: the same justification he’s using for building his ballroom and now his triumphal arch. It is also, not coincidentally, the excuse President Richard M. Nixon floated for covering up the Watergate break-in in June 1972.

In any case, no one’s buying it. MAGA Republicans have tried to claim that President Joe Biden cancelled 400 press passes. In fact, in 2023 the Biden administration tightened the rules to get a “hard” press pass that allows repeated, unaccompanied access to the press area of the White House. To have one, a reporter had to renew it annually, be employed full-time as a reporter, have a Washington, D.C., area address, and have had recent access to the White House. With that change, the number of White House hard passes fell from 1,417 to 975 because many of those who held passes didn’t reapply. Those people could still get day passes. In any event, these changes regarded individual reporters, not entire media outlets.

The Biden White House did not identify the one journalist whose hard pass application was denied.

Today CNN, MS NOW, and Politico sued Trump, Trump’s communications director Steven Cheung, Secret Service director Sean Curran, and White House chief of staff Wiles for violating both the Fifth and the First Amendments. “This ban could not be a more direct assault on the First Amendment, nor a more blatant violation of our most fundamental constitutional principles,” the lawsuit says. It says Trump banned the outlets and the reporters to retaliate against the reporters for their past news coverage “because he deemed it ‘negative’ and chilling future reporting about him and his administration’s policies and actions.”

They are suing for the restoration of their press credentials for their coverage of the White House.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, appointed by Trump to the bench in 2017, was assigned the case. Although Trump appointed Kelly, in 2018, the judge ruled that Trump’s revoking of journalist Jim Acosta’s hard press pass likely violated his due process rights. Trump groused that the news outlets “have drawn a great Judge, for them, a man who ruled in favor of Jim Acosta.” Apparently anticipating a loss, he has already vowed to appeal.

He ranted that journalists were demeaning the Oval Office by reporting negative stories about him. “Virtually every story about me, or anything having to do with me, is negative, wrong and, in many cases, DANGEROUS for our Country! No matter how GREAT my Achievements, they trivialize and demean,” he posted. “I have an obligation to fight for the Success and Safety of our Country. FAKE NEWS IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY, and I will do whatever is necessary to make sure that the U.S.A. thrives.”

Podcaster Allison Gill noted that Judge Kelly ordered the government to respond to the lawsuit by tomorrow, and that he has set a hearing for Wednesday afternoon at 3:30.

Perhaps of even more concern to Trump is that the major news networks are refusing to cover him on television, starving him of media oxygen.

ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC News take turns providing the television coverage of the president, and CNN was supposed to be in charge of the TV pool today. With CNN banned, the other networks refused to take its place, leaving television coverage of Trump suspended. A.J. Katz of The Wrap reported on their joint statement, in which they said: “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”

This afternoon, Trump held an event at the White House, but without a press pool, there was no audio. It was just footage of Trump standing with a group of people and apparently talking.

The White House advertised “The White House App” on social media, claiming users could “[g]et real-time updates and live events streamed DIRECTLY to your phone. No noise. Just the news that matters most—straight from the Trump Administration. DOWNLOAD NOW,” it said.

Users were not kind. One commented: “I’d rather launch my phone into the sun than install a government propaganda app.” Others noted that the administration is eager to get its hands on user information, and only a fool would install what could be spyware on their phone.

Peter Alexander of MS NOW had his own response to Trump’s attacks on the press: “This is not normal. This is not business as usual,” he said.

“What's happening right now is different. The latest threat against our cherished freedoms protected by the U.S. Constitution. The media is not perfect. There’s a debate to be had about who you trust, where you should get your news.

“This is something bigger, though. Among the privileges, the duties of a free press, are to hold power to account, to ask the difficult questions, to document history as it happens. The president says fake news is reporting that is untrue. In fact, it’s reporting that he finds unflattering.

“And here’s the reality. A little more than seven weeks until the midterms, many of the facts are unflattering. Where to begin? Gas prices, now $4.48 a gallon on average, $1.50 more than where they were before the war with Iran began. Ask farmers about the price of diesel, now at a record high, nearly $6.50 a gallon.

“All of it due to a war the president started, a war he vowed would be done within weeks but is now in its seventh month. Eighteen American service members dead, if not more, and that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface.

“A trade war with Canada, an obsession with the Kennedy Center, if it’s not demolished like the East Wing, then there’s the grift, the self-dealing, a Russian oligarch paying for Trump’s son’s wedding party, billions of dollars made by the Trump family.

“Those are the facts. They may be unflattering, but they are not fake.

“I’ve been there since the beginning. Trump's frustration, this fury, it didn’t happen overnight. On the campaign trail, I remember, before he even took office, he would yell at us in the bullpen in the back of those large rallies, riling up the MAGA crowd. Once elected, he would insult reporters to their face—I’ve been there—and he would call journalists the enemy of the people. As one of my former colleagues described it, Trump is trying to discredit the messenger, to create a vacuum where his version of reality fills that void.

“But the answer from journalists is simple. To report more, with more sources, more digging, more facts.”

Trump has his own answer. The White House YouTube channel announced this afternoon that at 7:00 tonight it will launch “TRUMP TV: The Essentials Station.”

The comment feature on the channel is turned off.

Don’t hold your breath, he just announced Trump TV…

.🙄

logicisall · 22/09/2026 08:02

The White House has launched a 24-hour streaming channel called “Trump TV” amid an escalating confrontation with US news teams, days after President Donald Trump barred CNN, Politico and MS NOW reporters from the White House over what he called unfavourable or “fake news” coverage.
The White House announced on X that “TRUMP TV” was live and would offer round-the-clock, real-time video of administration announcements, major presidential remarks and archival highlights.
The service, branded “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” is hosted through the White House’s YouTube channel.

It's good that they're going to court over the ban as the legal precedent is important, but I actually wish they'd just stay away. It's pretty clear that he withers without the microphone. Media critic Jay Rosen has been saying since the beginning of the first Trump administration that the media should, as he puts it, send in the interns. Just skip the spectacle and report from the outside, and I think he's right.

I have to say, though, I'm almost looking forward to the buffoonery promised by the prospect of these idiots running a media feed from inside the White House. I'm envisioning hours of static, dropped microphones, muffled swearing, teleprompter mishaps where Mein Kampf gets substituted for healthcare policy speeches...

TiredCatLady · 22/09/2026 08:28

We really need a face-palm reaction on here. As soon as they announced they’d refuse to cover it, I knew he’d be like “I’ll just have my own station, it’ll be the hottest TV station ever, we call it TRUMP TV. Only by annual subscription for just $999.99…” (last bit hasn’t happened yet but give it time…)

BruceAndNosh · 22/09/2026 08:51

Trump knows he will lose the case re banning the press as he admitted as such insisting he will appeal (before the case has even been heard). No one else in the country can get appeals heard the way Trump can - it really is a two tier system

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 22/09/2026 08:52

Yesterday's TRIP US was quite interesting. Finally, Anthony Scaramucci and Katty Kay seem to have realised that you can't report on Trump with any gravitas if you treat his behaviour as normal. Some good little "behind the scenes" titbits.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I've been saying this since Trump started on his first campaign for the Presidency (ditto Farage and Brexit). If the media hadn't given them the oxygen of publicity in the first place, neither the US nor Britain would be where they are today. It infuriates me still.

Yup. I do think a lot of people believed, with good intention, that the more people saw of him the less they'd like him, which backfired pretty spectacularly. I, for some bizarre reason, subjected myself to watching his speeches at that insane mid-term convention he just gave himself. And the thing is, as much as I hate to admit it, amidst the incoherent demented ramblings, he's actually pretty funny. That thing where he had the audience pledge the allegiance to him? As repulsive as it was, he was definitely doing it tongue in cheek.

On the flip side, Sarah Longwell mentioned the other day that leaving xtwitter and going to truth social probably helped him on the grounds that so few people are on it, no one other than the diehards and media addicted actually see the shit he pumps out on a constant basis.

RedTagAlan · 22/09/2026 09:34

More BS apparently.

“The United States is working on a massive Deal with respect to the purchase of Potash from Belarus. The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada,” Trump, Truth Social.

Except for one minor detail -

"Belarus’s authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko said Monday that there are no available volumes of fertilizer to send to the U.S. This came after President Trump announced that he was working on a “massive Deal” to buy potash from Minsk at a steep discount amid the trade war with Canada.
“Even if we wanted to supply [potash] to other, Western markets, we simply do not have those volumes — everything is contracted,” Lukashenko said in remarks published by his office on Monday."

He really should check on stuff before he makes claims.

Alexander Lukashenko says there is no potash in Belarus left to sell to the US (thehill.com)

Hope the escalators in the UN building are (mysteriously) prone to suddenly stopping again today when carrying orange lard arses and their wives.

With that in mind - is Mel turning up with him today?

What is all this "sign in to prove you're not a bot" dreck? Why would being watched by a bot matter anyway?

I am not about to sign in to YouTube, so I can no longer see Seth Meyers. Pity.

Spandauer · 22/09/2026 13:20

Oh that's weird. I don't subscribe to YouTube but I can open people's posted videos on there. Can you open like a random DIY YouTube video for eg?

Seth Myers is also available on Instagram, Tik Tok and FB I think.

You wont be seeing Trump TV then. That's on youtube.

I wonder if it will have adds that he gets paid for ? And why not put it on TikTok ? After all, his palls bought it for him.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/09/2026 13:52

I've tried YouTube every whichway after it has said I have to sign in to see any content, and nothing has worked thereafter. I suspect it doesn't like the security I have on this machine to stop bad lives from scraping all my data.

Some YouTube (eg old Rolling Stones singles) is fine. More recent stuff randomly insists it wants to know I am not a bot. Hmmm. Maybe if I go to old pop and then sneak in to Seth Meyers from that I might get to see what I wanted.... Nope, no joy.

I will look for Seth Meters elsewhere; thanks. (And found it on Facebook.)

Well you already have a YouTube account if you have a google account. And unless you really have gone around the houses you will have a google account to access your android device.

Unseating the perpetually 'concerned' Susan Collins will help the chances of flipping the Senate in Dems favour.

Hopefully the fine people of Maine are taking note of this.

After the FBI caught a defense contractor’s CEO making illegal campaign contributions, it sought to launch a sweeping political bribery probe involving Collins and others. Then the second Trump administration dismantled the unit handling the inquiry.

If we are being pedants then you can run an android phone sans Google. If you like making work for yourself. Like repeatedly dealing with banking apps that won't work.

And that won't help with YouTube which is part of the Googleplex if you need an account to sign in depending on what you are accessing.
