RAIN

We have actual rain.
As in, lots of it, chucking it down, pouring, a deluge...

We have not had any significant or even measurable rainfall since what feels like forever.
The grass all around has been dead, crispy brown for months.
The trees have shed their leaves in an effort to cope under extreme stress, under what is known as 'False Autumn' (yes I watched the news this morning!)

This rain feels healing.
The DCs were singing Rihanna's 'Umbrella' in the car!

(I know, I know, I'll be back on here in a few weeks complaining how now it's started it won't stop 😄 but for now, I feel joyous!)

It stopped raining a few hours ago, but has just now started to drizzle again. In the distance, there is RUMBLING.

DH has gone out for a walk so he's going to get wet if he doesn't hurry up!!

IwanttoWFH · 27/08/2026 17:19

Lots of rain in London this morning. It was glorious. You won’t catch me complaining. I’m impatiently waiting being able to wear a jumper and sleep under my duvet at night….

Cotopaxi · 27/08/2026 17:24

Crikey. In the last few minutes since I posted, the sound of thunder has moved nearer and is continuous - there are no breaks at all. 😮Still only drizzle though.

Ah - DH just got back. He just said he's never heard anything like it.

BigJanette · 27/08/2026 17:34

Keep us updated @Cotopaxi !
Am slightly jealous, as after this morning's downpour, we've had grey clouds which I was hoping meant more rain but not a sausage!
Just hot and sticky and very humid again.

Bright and sunny here again and 23 degrees

somekindofdoughnut · 27/08/2026 17:37

I was awoken at 3am by the most almighty crack of thunder followed by an hour-ish of heavy rain. But it's warm and sunny again now.

Cotopaxi · 27/08/2026 17:53

@BigJanette Still just drizzle. But the thunder - it has been continuously rumbling without a single pause for well over half an hour now. We haven't seen any actual lightning at all so it must be going from cloud to cloud really high up. Extraordinary.

Cotopaxi · 27/08/2026 17:59

Still raining, but the sun has come out and we now have not one but two rainbows.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 27/08/2026 18:24

Splashsuit and wellies for granddaughter, great fun was had, jumping in muddy puddles.

Cotopaxi · 27/08/2026 18:26

Well over an hour now for the continuous rolling thunder and one of my cats is seriously dischuffed.😼

SusanSHelit · 27/08/2026 18:31

It's been throwing down all day today and we had a quite spectacular thunderstorm last night. I've been sitting in my armchair by the window with it open, occasionally I've stuck my hand out to feel it. It's been lovely. I'm one of those oddballs that likes the rain in general though, it feels cleansing

BigJanette · 27/08/2026 19:48

@SusanSHelit that's how I feel about it too.

@Cotopaxi hope your cats are OK!

@Cyclistmumgrandma lots of fun for sure!

Grass is already green here in Yorkshire, it’s amazing how straw grass does that!

FettleOfKish · 27/08/2026 20:48

We moved end of March and haven’t had much heavy rain since. Now we have it’s clear the guttering is f*cked and water pouring down the side of our front door is now appearing indoors, up through the floor Confused

Our last place was unliveable for a year after a big storm damaged the roof and water poured in through the ceilings for weeks.

Is it too much to ask just to have a waterproof home Sad

Thestealer · 27/08/2026 20:52

Mega storm atm in the Midlands.

Cotopaxi · 27/08/2026 21:03

Cats are fine @BigJanette thanks, and the continuous thunder faded away after about two hours when the storm gradually moved away. Funny thing is, the whole time we had it, there were no aircraft anywhere near us. We're midway between two big airports and there are normally planes going over fairly often. Not a single one, so they must have been avoiding the whole area like the plague. I looked on Flightradar - not a sausage. Don't blame them.

SusanSHelit · 27/08/2026 21:07

I have two cats, a 10 week old rescue kitten and a pampered 4 year old. Massive lighting strike what felt like right outside the window last night, I jumped out of my skin, big cat hid in the kitchen, kitten opened one eye a crack and went back to sleep!

DrCoconut · 27/08/2026 21:15

It absolutely poured with rain last week when we were camping. And again today. It's now forecast for the rest of the holidays. We do need it but I prefer warm dry weather. Not pleased that it's nearly September and getting dark early again. Roll on May 😂

Balalabab · 27/08/2026 21:17

It’s practically biblical here in the midlands.

dudsville · 27/08/2026 21:21

It's really momentous isn't. Today was our second big rain, the first came a few days back, after 10 weeks of no rain. It feels like such a relief.

We added to our vast water butt collection last week, we now collect water from our showers, and that can go onto anything that isn't edible, so at least our garden won't suffer like this again.

But I agree with the pp, it is so much easier to dry laundry in the terrible heat!

Cotopaxi · 27/08/2026 21:32

I bought a carpet washer the other day, intending to use it whilst the weather was still hot and dry.

So it's my fault it is raining😊

CatLady199 · 27/08/2026 21:34

In Staffordshire and we have a storm and amazing lightening.

Minesril · 27/08/2026 22:16

Cat was very cross and has been in most of the day. He smells lovely after his drenching, however. That sort of fresh outdoors smell!

SleepingisanArt · 27/08/2026 22:17

Still waiting...... (I think it just went round my bit of Hampshire) Might get some on Saturday according to the current 'forecast' but I'll believe it when I see it. I have a starring role in that we'll known film 'Carry On Watering'....

SusanSHelit · 27/08/2026 22:30

We have another cracking thunderstorm here in Liverpool tonight, proper rumbly thunder and torrential rain
