What did you do with your engagement ring after divorce?

For anyone who got divorced, what did you do with your engagement ring?

Mine wasn't the most expensive thing in the world but still, it's platinum with a diamond. It seems crazy to keep it (plus, it could look sentimental when it's not) but also somehow it seems mercenary to sell. But I've been divorced for 4 years now, separated for 9.

Is it common to sell it, maybe put the money into a S&S ISA for DC, or something?

I lost it running away with 2 toddlers and a Lidls bag of clothes. Probably left in the home and was sold for parts by XH 🤣

Thanks everyone. I will look into remodelling, maybe that's something that makes sense.

Hi OP - if so, Hatton Garden is the place to go if you are in London, or Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham

If you travel to US/Asia/ME this may also be an option to do overseas

ExH took all rings in a fit of pique and I didn't feel like lowering myself to grovelling for them.

I told him to sell them the next time he started whining about being skint now and needing to pay maintenance. I took satisfaction from that.

My mum had all the jewellery my dad ever brought her melted down and made into like earrings and necklaces which she gave to me and my sister for special birthdays ect. I thought that was a really nice idea.

I got engaged to my ex and I had the ring made into a necklace I’ll probably give my daughter for her 21st or something. DH knows and doesn’t care because the way he sees it’s a money saving move. At the end of the day it’s not really my engagement diamond anymore it’s just a diamond.

My ex left me pregnant for another woman (having had 6 rounds of fertility treatment - so very planned). I sold it along with wedding ring to buy a pram. Didn't get what it was worth but I needed a pram more than some rings I didn't want to wear.

I got mine remodeled for my 40th birthday. Just had it redone (with some extra sparkle) for my 50th, will start a new savings account soon to start a 60th ring remodeling fund

deardumpling · 26/08/2026 14:46

Nice ring so I wear it on my right hand.

DahliaSmith · 26/08/2026 14:47

Sold.

I'm not able to join the conversation from experience, but have any of you who've kept them considered having them remade? Whether into another ring or a different piece of jewellery altogether.

It's surprisingly inexpensive because you're only paying for the jewellers time rather than all the materials from scratch.

Especially if you have lots of unworn pieces sitting about.

I was going to say this. Second hand rings lose so much value. If i got divorced i’d get the stones recast into a fabulous design of my own choosing as a celebration of meeeee and my fabulous taste and freedom 😁

I love this for you!

murasaki · 26/08/2026 14:56

Sold it as i needed the money and didn't want to look at it.

Walkacrossthesand · 26/08/2026 15:03

Mine got nicked in a burglary. Was keeping them to give my daughters at 18 if they wanted them, but hey-ho 🤷‍♀️

thereisnothingleft · 26/08/2026 15:12

I sold it. It cost £300 when we bought it and got £80.

HauntedRavioli · 26/08/2026 15:13

Never had an engagement ring but I chucked my wedding ring in a lake the same day I filled out the divorce paperwork. It felt good, but a little anticlimactic! I sold the wedding dress for £15 and bought a bottle of wine with the proceeds.

I considered having the ring melted and turned into something new, but it would still have been my wedding ring and I just didn't want anything from that day in my house or on my body.

AlwayAnxious · 26/08/2026 15:14

Oooh, im.not sure where mine is.
I dont know if i kept it.... 🤔

Lexy2345 · 26/08/2026 15:14

I wear mine on my right hand, it's a pretty ring and I like it, plus I helped pay for it.

GentleSheep · 26/08/2026 15:21

Mine was worth next to nothing, I think it's still in an old jewellery box. Since I no longer wear jewellery (nickel allergy) I'm unlikely to come across it.

annonymousse · 26/08/2026 15:35

Wedding ring thrown into the sea. Engagement ring to elder daughter and eternity ring to younger daughter. I don't know what they have done with them.

IsThisLifeNow · 26/08/2026 15:38

divorce due to be final in a few weeks and I have no idea. Its gold, white gold, diamond and ruby cluster ring, so tiny stones that I'm not sure could be reworked individually. I do like the ring, but its too painful to wear it now, Its tucked away in a small box along with my wedding ring. I'll definitely keep my wedding ring as it was my Granmother's and has sentimental value, but may get that reworked into something more wearable

MirrorMirror1247 · 26/08/2026 15:48

I still have mine. It's a nice ring and I don't think I'd get very much for it if I were to sell it. It's a bit small at the moment as I've put on weight, but once it fits again I might wear it on the other hand now and again.

Fast800goingforit · 26/08/2026 15:49

Still got it somewhere. ExH wanted it, and an eternity ring (I paid for the eternity ring!) until I told him it wasn't worth much. Secondhand jewellery isn't, unfortunately. I did remodel my wedding ring at a silver smithing class and set it with a stone.

Rosietru · 26/08/2026 15:50

Took it to a pawnbrokers and treated my best friend to a weekend in Barcalona with the proceeds.

HereIAmAlive · 26/08/2026 15:54

Never divorced but I was engaged and my ex broke it off - I sold the ring. Only got £100 for it, but I mostly just wanted to get rid of it because he and his parents had started to make noises about how I should give it back so I wanted to be able to say I no longer had it if they asked again!

PinkNeonSign · 26/08/2026 16:04

I traded my wedding ring in against another piece of jewellery. I had my engagement ring resized and wear it on my right hand. I have a new partner now and I’m not sure I feel
right about wearing it so much, I’d like a new ring in a different style so contemplating trading both in against another.
