My stomach does not like it when I go abroad - help!

My poor guts when I go away.

Starts on the aeroplane - really bad gas. I have to really restrict what I eat.

I took a bloating stomach supplement and nexium in preparation. Didn’t help at all

Yesterday - had a very simple breakfast of boiled eggs, bit of salmon, cucumbers, tomatoes and a tiny bit of cheese. Then had chicken Pho soup for dinner. Zero alcohol :(

Same breakfast today yet I’m back on the toilet and my stomach sounds like it’s have conversations with its self. Feels like I’ve been punched in the gut.

I’m in a nice hotel so I shouldn’t be having this 🥴

Same every time I dare to leave uk.

Any one with these problems what do you take?

I’m also drinking electrolytes!

It's the water.

You might not drink it but things are washed in it, like the salads.

Teamsaction · 26/08/2026 06:42

I have no ideas to help but wanted to offer sympathy. I always get very constipated on holiday, no issues in the UK. I try and up my fibre and water but it makes no difference. I blame the plane.

Maybe I should stick to a fried breakfast 🥴

Yes it definitely starts there!

Increase fibre. You need a couple of good poos.

I always take flax and chia with me. And in the US on a trip last year, I bought flax, chia, kiwi, mixed seeds and yoghurt and kept in hotel room for my breakfast.

I often need to have a poo once I get off a long haul flight. Then increase fibre to keep it moving through.

Try and find some mixed seeds and Greek yoghurt.

olympicsrock · 26/08/2026 06:47

I’d avoid eggs as well if you get a dicky tum.

Autumnallaround · 26/08/2026 06:48

And water. So so so much water.

millecent · 26/08/2026 06:52

I always get very bloated and constipated on holiday and got sucked in by Instagram ads and bought some of this ahead of my last trip. It worked. It sounds like the op may have the opposite problem though?

Brush your teeth using bottled water. Avoid the salads. Wash your hands a lot. Use hygiene gel when the washing facilities (or lack of) look dodgy.

I think drinking sweet pop can help when your stomach is a bit iffy - gives you energy and replaces electrolytes.

I’m the same - I’ve found wearing loose fitting clothes on the plane really helps. Nothing with a waistband whatsoever- a loose dress works best for me.
also although I love eggs I find they set me off on holiday so I avoid them in the morning

My relative who’s just met up with me said exactly the same. I’ll give them a miss now

I think there are seeds in the buffet area so I’ll have a look 👀

Essentially, as the plane ascends, the atmospheric pressure in the cabin changes and this means any air trapped in the gut expands causing bloating.

This is common knowledge.

Autumnallaround · 26/08/2026 09:01

Oh and do you know happy baby pose from yoga? Lots of that. Interspered with child's pose and twists.

In fact I'm sure there's yoga for bloating on youtube.

Good luck op! I thought I was going to have to go for a poo on a transatlantic flight last year. Flying makes my bowels move.. (I didn't, thank god. Just went to the loo for lots of farts!)

Autumnallaround · 26/08/2026 09:01

Oh and don't stop exercising. Keep walking and do some fast walks too before breakfast.

My goodness, aren't you perfect?

TheBewleySisters · 26/08/2026 09:24

Apart from not not drinking the water, I don’t have salads or ice in my drinks. In fact I usually lose a bit of weight on holiday as I am so careful. Doesn’t stop my enjoyment though. I’d just rather not risk tummy problems which I used to be prone to before I started being extra careful.

IsThisLifeNow · 26/08/2026 09:43

sometimes it can be the change in mineral content of the water too, so suddenly drinking a lot of bottled water instead of the regular tap water that you are used to. No advice on how to avoid this sadly

paomara · 26/08/2026 09:53

I'm beginning to think there's something wrong with me, since I rarely if ever suffer from anything like this when away. If I do, it's straight to the strong coffee in the morning, that'll sort it!

Due sympathy with you all though. I had a bout of this following laparascopic surgery last year and boy was it hell. I used peppermint tea, simethicone, magnesium citrate and milled flax and chia on yogurt. It eventually sorted itself out, but I was so bloated and uncomfortable. Thankfully no recurrence. YET!

unimog · 26/08/2026 09:59

The long-haul log!

Drink tons of water when flying, move around as much as you can. Eat normal (for you) food for the first couple of days with a side order of lots of bottled water.

Isobel201 · 26/08/2026 10:30

which country did you go to? I went to Norway last year and I was fine.

deplorabelle · 26/08/2026 10:42

Where in the world are you? Is it somewhere where the tap water is not drinking water?

It sounds like the plane journey is where your issues start - you could look at holidaying by train or boat next time and see if that helps?

Also when you're travelling, never wait sitting down just slowly walk around the terminal/station before it's time to join the queue. That will keep your system moving. If it's possible to get up and walk on the transport, do that regularly.

HappydaysArehere · 26/08/2026 10:42

I always felt nauseous on holidays abroad. Then I decided to cover up from the sun. So big hat and no sunbathing. From then on I was fine and could enjoy the holidays.
