Is this a terrible fancy dress idea? 1976 party.

I’ve been invited to a “1976” themed party. I really don’t want to do the whole ABBA bit, that everyone is getting exited about, but “Rocky” was released in 1976…. So could I go as Rocky Balboa?i

Red, white and blue outfit - the Queen's jubilee was a huge event that year.

It was in 1977.

Margot wouldn't have been seen dead in a tracksuit. Or velour. She was wearing oilskins and a sou'wester in that scene.

Correction - yellow waterproofs rather than true oilskins.

Nooo, you can’t go as a bloke! 😂 Me and my husband went as Sid Vicious and Nancy to a fancy dress party recently, it was so easy to do!

I was walking across the car park into the venue when this guy pulled up and asked me if it was where the fancy dress party was, I said, “No, I dress like this all the time!” 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣🤣

All you need is a pair of bondage trousers (improvised), a bin liner and creativity with a load of safety pins - the birth of punk!

BtwixtNBtween · 25/08/2026 23:29

‘Carrie’ was released in 1976.
Linda McCartney (Wings).
Kiki Dee (in dungarees) with Elton John.

HellsBells13 · 25/08/2026 23:32

I went as Nana Mascouri. Vintage brown 70s long brown dress, parted darkened hair, the classic Nana glasses.

Nevermind the fact that the OP hasn’t said what gender they are, even if they were a woman… why can’t they go as a bloke?

Think Rocky would be a great choice - red headband, white vest?

No it wasn’t, that was 1977!

Lot of options - Elton john, punk rock eg sex pistols, looks like the muppets first aired so lots of choices there, movies eg Jaws, the omen

Just found this page - lots of ideas

gosh that’s a blast from the past.
I Clavdivs (as everyone called it) … the OP could go in a toga, optionally bloodstained.

Wear a yellow T Shirt and draw greenfly all over it !!

Memory unlocked! WTF was all that about, hardly see a greenfly now. I also remember the swams of ladybirds - OP go as a Ladybird!

Haha, I hadn’t even considered that the OP might be a bloke! I wouldn’t have thought a bloke would ask this question though, I just meant, if you’re going to make the effort, why not dress up and make yourself look nice?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/08/2026 07:30

I’d forgotten I’d started this thread!
Yes, I am a woman, and I remember 1976 fairly well! “Rocky” is about boxing, I was thinking of grey hoody and joggers, trainers and a Sly Stallone mask. But maybe not jolly enough for a birthday party.

My other thought was to pin paper cups all over me, as one of my main memories of the year was being given half a cup of water at school every morning and afternoon. The majority of the guests work in the water industry. And the ladybirds…

Punk is a great idea. I could work with that. Also Margot, even though I’m much more Barbara !

DM has a wardrobe full of Margo type dresses. Unfortunately in a 1970a size 8, and I am 8” taller and a 2020s size 16.

Bikini and glasses. The hottest summer ever. Until this year.

Stormyrose · 26/08/2026 07:37

You don’t want to be keeping a Stallone mask on, so basically you will just be in lounging or work out gear most of the time and look like you didn’t make an effort.

VieuxFort · 26/08/2026 07:39

I detest fancy dress so would do the minimum. Flared jeans and a cheesecloth shirt. Esska sandals. Hair in a middle parting.

bananaobama · 26/08/2026 07:54

Sounds like a difficult one

whwre do ypu buy vintage 70s stuff?

bananaobama · 26/08/2026 07:56

Barbara would be easier to source. Dungarees and a shirt. Basket of carrots

Tomfooleries · 26/08/2026 08:00

RobertaFirmino · 25/08/2026 22:53

I was born in 1976, you could go as me if you want!

I was four in 1976 and would totally go as myself.

DistractMe · 26/08/2026 08:05

Bay City Rollers were pretty much over by 1976 (I was 13, so keenly aware of these things).

I reckon you choose to either go full on disco queen, or punk. Punk gear probably easier to source.

But I do like the ladybird idea.

They haven't said what SEX they are.
They don't have a gender, they aren't a Latin noun!
