Feeling old after younger shoppers did not recognise Colman's mustard powder

Ever felt really old.
Yesterday I went to the shop after work. I'm going to Spain next week for 4 days. DH loves English mustard and it's not available locally.
Since I am not taking a bag I thought I'd get dried colmans powder.
I hunted up and down fruitlessly. I asked a young couple (probably 25ish) if they could see any.
Neither knew what it was. They were bemused at the idea it didn't come ready mixed.
A couple of the staff had the same reaction.
Luckily an older staff member came to my rescue.
I am almost certain that my 25 year old daughter knows what it is.

I've never hear of it. Not in my twenties or younger.

My DDs are 20 and 22 and know what this is; funnily enough we were talking about it the other day, the older one said it was her favorite looking tin (tied with the paprika ones) 😂
We are a condiment and seasoning heavy household who cook a lot, the dc love cooking and have done since they were small so the little yellow tin would be a very familiar sight to my young people!

I have some in my cupboard. Mid 50s. DS (19) knows what it is and uses it regularly. DS (21) wouldn’t have a clue!

I toss par-boiled potatoes in mustard powder and plain flour before roasting (in beef dripping) 😋

I now really want something with mustard.

My DM used to get it as literally only her uncle ate mustard and they used to come over for Sunday lunch once a month. I must say as mustard lasts ages anyway and I like it I just buy a jar and keep it in the fridge once opened.

Tend to have Dijon in and French's though, letting the English side down. It's just a bit less ouch if you add more than a smidge, as I really like the flavour, without setting my mouth on fire.

I think I have some in the cupboard. I've certainly bought it in the past, but only because occasionally I have wanted to use it for a recipe. It lasts me for years and years! It's never occured to me to make it up into mustard to use as a condiment. I didn't really know that was what you were supposed to do with it and I wouldn't know how. Just water?

Always keep it in. Lasts forever. Roast beef, roast chicken, salad dressing. Last made some up yesterday to eat with pork pie.

I know what it is, but I can't say I buy it all that often. The last time was about a year ago and that was to replace a tin I'd had for years and just finished. I'd inherited it from late DM's store cupboard, and she died in 1992.

Don’t worry. That’s their ignorance rather than your age.

Once they learn to cook rather than live on McD’s, or need to feed a family on a budget, they’ll learn. 😁

I use mustard powder, as well as various jars.
Made mustard goes off, powder has a long BBE date - which means nothing as my current tin is several years past it.

I cook and have never used mustard powder in my life. It just isn’t something I’d ever consider.

Don’t think my mother uses it either and she’s in her 70s

Mum had a cruet set with a mustard pot and spoon in the centre. it was my job when we had beef to get the mustard powder and mix up enough to go in the pot. i do not buy mustard now only me and I am vegan but remember the powder was best especially a pinch in cheese scones

I wanted to buy an "oven cloth" . If you don't know, this is like oven gloves but its a cloth. Usually white with a blue stripe on it. I did not think I would ever have to give a such a description like that but here we are.

I tried in two department stores - John Lewis in Kingston (which is massive) and Elys in Wimbledon. Nothing but blank looks in both places.

It was both frustrating and amusing at the same time. To find myself so out of step and out of time by asking for something so usual and mundane (in my experience) but to be met with utter bewilderment. 😂

I have a teeny mustard spoon ( John Lewis) and a couple of teeny silver ones from my grandparents house ( no idea of the age of them but my Great Grandmother would have done things properly)
I like the grainy french mustard in the white jar with the lid and red wax.

I do NOT like Coleman's after picking up a teaspoon that I didn't realise was used for mixing a batch , spooning milkshake powder then putting it in my mouth 🤢

My local branch of Tesco must be very obscure, then, as it is sold off the shelf, and stands proudly alongside the many other brands of mustard! (Admittedly, though, it is in the smaller tins, not the giant one in the Amazon link above).

I’m in my 30s and know about it cos my parents always bought it . I think I bought it once over the years for a Jamie Oliver recipe and have only ever used it that time. Wasn’t there a shortage of it for a few years and it disappeared from the shops ?
