Feeling old after younger shoppers did not recognise Colman's mustard powder

Ever felt really old.
Yesterday I went to the shop after work. I'm going to Spain next week for 4 days. DH loves English mustard and it's not available locally.
Since I am not taking a bag I thought I'd get dried colmans powder.
I hunted up and down fruitlessly. I asked a young couple (probably 25ish) if they could see any.
Neither knew what it was. They were bemused at the idea it didn't come ready mixed.
A couple of the staff had the same reaction.
Luckily an older staff member came to my rescue.
I am almost certain that my 25 year old daughter knows what it is.

Well, I know what it is but that won't be much consolation to you as I'm in my 50s.😆

I can't get over the idea that you'll be packing mustard powder for four days. I'm not surprised your DD would recognise it since it sounds like you live in a very mustard-focussed household.

I know what it is but I’m 60, had no idea you could still get it and would consider it something my Granny would have had.

Im 58, only vaguely aware of mustard powder. Didn't know it was still a thing you could get.

I’ve only ever used or heard of it being used in recipes. I’m not sure why anyone would need a particular condiment abroad with them for only 4 days, why you would be mixing it yourself when the jars of mustard are often very small and under any liquid limits, or why it’s worse them not knowing what the powder is vs you not being able to look in front of you and find it yourself.

Yes I know what it is but also find it very strange that your DH needs mustard that badly 🤣 what will he be eating it with, tapas?

I have a container of colmans mustard powder in my cupboard and use it regularly in cooking as a spice as well as making it up and spreading on sandwiches. But I’m 59! However my DD who is 20 uses it, she’s a keen cook and used it in making a batch of cheese scones yesterday, so perhaps there is some hope OP!

I'm a mustard lover - my favourite is the Maille dijon mustard, but nowt wrong with a bit of Colman's English.

I’d hunt out some handy sachets from a restaurant OP. Travel sized!

I use it in cheesey recipes but im approaching 40.

It's so much easier to reach for the ready prepared stuff!

I have bought Colman's mustard powder in the past (also in my 50s!) - the mustard made from the powder is hotter and stronger. I used to end up making too much mustard from the powder and wasting it!

It was sad when the Colman's shop closed in Norwich. You could buy special jars for the mustard that were so cute. You can still buy them online 🙂

I’m curious about his technique for mixing up mustard on the go? Does he bring a special dish? A mini whisk? Repurpose a matcha set perhaps?

I am 45. I have never used colmans powder. Can’t even recall seeing it. And will never use it.

Just like @EndorsingPRActice I always have Coleman's powder in my cupboard. I use it regularly as a seasoning, but not so much to mix up as an actual mustard sauce (keep a jar of wholegrain for that). I also have older teens who will use it, when cooking with me. I'm not sure they will go on to use it in their daily lives though, so maybe it will die out eventually?

Im in my younger 40s and I both know what it is and use it it cooking. No one else in my family likes mustard or marmite! They have no idea they eat both regularly in spag bol / cheese sauce. It's my little evil win.

I am also in my 50s and from a heavily mustard based background. We always have a tin in the condiments cupboard. I also have a tiny mustard spoon that once had a matching pot and lid. There are two mildly interesting shows on BBC Sounds about Colman’s mustard, Secret Norfolk and The Food Programme.

I’m in my 50s and always have a tin of it in, I use it in cooking, in salad dressings etc (it emulsifies the oil and vinegar really well) but can’t remember the last time I mixed it to use as actual mustard (teaspoon/eggcup, no fancy equipment required). You have to leave it for a few minutes for the flavour to develop. I don’t keep a jar of English mustard in as no one likes it apart from me, they all prefer Dijon but I do make some up very occasionally for a ham sandwich. We use one of the tins for our family emergency pound coin stash, started when the DCs were at primary school and always needing a pound for this or that. My Granny used to say that Colman’s made all their money from the mustard people didn’t eat, the smears on the side of the plate where people took too much.,

I know because I am 57.
You can sometimes find it in my local mini supermarket.
There are worse things about getting older.

I’m 30 and I use the powder on my beef joints for my Sunday roasts. Maybe the 25yo’s you asked just don’t have any experience of it yet, they might start using it once they figure out there’s more to life than chicken nuggets and pizza 👀🤣

I'm 46 and only knew you could get the powder because I saw it in a recipe once. I'm almost certain my son in his twenties wouldn't know what it was though.
