Toyota Yaris vs Peugeot 2008 - anyone driven either?

I’m getting back on the road after a break from driving for health reasons, and I’m choosing something on the smaller/cheaper side this time so I’m not risking too much on a car, as secondhand prices have gone up a fair bit lately anyway.
I’ve narrowed it down to two, and I really like both, so hoping some Mumsnetters might have driven one or the other:

• Toyota Yaris 1.5 115HP Icon Auto, 2024, ~28,700 miles
• Peugeot 2008 1.2 130HP GT Premium, 2022, ~52,000 miles

I like that the 2008 sits higher up on the road (easier getting in and out), but I don’t do much motorway driving, maybe once a month, so I’m not sure that matters as much as I first thought. My kids are all off at college with their own cars now, so I don’t need the extra space in the back like I used to either. Has anyone driven either of these? Would love to hear how they compare for reliability, comfort, and just general day-to-day driving.

My wife has a Yaris cross and loves it.

I've got a 2019 Yaris and it's excellent.

I love my Yaris. Had it from new for 4 years.

Just checked Car Wow review of the Yaris. It’s a bit disappointing to find out that the back seats don’t have electric windows 😔 suprised about that in a 2024 car. The reviewer guy is a bit critical of the interior design but is very approving of the driving and fuel efficiency.

My 2020 Excel Hybrid Yaris is amazing. My husband did loads of research when replacing my last car and decided this was best for reliability. I do a commute of 30 miles each way every day and 1 longer journey every week and it’s £15 to fill up!

The manual back windows doesn’t bother me in the slightest? If I’m in the front I virtually never need to open them (just maybe at a really steeply angled junction in the rain, that’s the only time I think I’d miss them, but in 20 years of Yaris driving it hasn’t bothered me at all TBH). Anyone in the back can use the handle.

Wow!! That’s amazing - I’m pretty much decided to get the Yaris, it has so much going for it that I don’t mind compromising on some features, this thread has been really helpful

Yaris absolutely. Ours is 21 and just passed its MOT with flying colours 😊 Needed a new tyre or 2 and headlights polished but that was it. Never let us down.

He did decide the model we have was worth getting because it has a bit of extra grunt going up hills than some of the other Yaris models so maybe look at that. I need good acceleration as have a fast upward hill on my commute, some are a little less powerful. Sorry I’m no car expert but hope you get my meaning!

I had a peugeot 2008. Nice to drive but not fuel efficient. My hybrid corsa is much better

Mum had a Yaris which was given to my daughter when she passed her test. It was 21 years old when my daughter part exchanged it and only ever needed a new exhaust in all those years!

A friend of mine has a 22 year old Yaris and has only ever needed an oil change.

Both cars were serviced regularly

Surely brake pads were needed? Tyres? Wheel bearings? Battery?

FGS buy the Toyota, from a poster who works at a business that sells and repairs cars. Unless of course you like visiting garages, in which case get the Peugeot. Parts for the Peugeot are very expensive and are so much more likely to need parts replacing than the Toyota. Peugeot 1.2 uses a very problematic wet belt engine in some of their models, I have no idea if this is one of them. Toyotas are not very exciting, true, but they have a very distinctive 'solid' feel about them when driving them.

My sister has a yaris which is 19 years old & still going strong! Never had a problem with it. Toyota's are very reliable 😊

Well that’s the thing, in my pre-Toyota days I hated visiting garages because it was expensive and often bad news. We have had nothing but Toyotas for the last 15 years (currently got 3) I do all the garage stuff because it’s near my work and it is a pleasure, the staff are so helpful and in the very rare event of them needing anything above wear and tear they sort out the warranty no bother at all.

UPDATE I went to the garage this morning and had another text drive of the two cars and I bought the Yaris!! I really happy with it, I’ll be getting it in two days time, and cannot wait to start driving it 🙌🏻 thanks for all the helpful advice 🥰

So glad you went for the Yaris @Liliferdefinitely the best choice! How old is it? I presume as a previous Toyota owner you know about doing the servicing with them and they will extend the warranty for another year, I'm not 100% sure of the details but I think it's up to the car being 10 years or 100k.

We run an independent dealership and we do this with the Toyotas we sell, costs us double what it costs internally to service before sale but we can sell it with a 12 month Toyota warranty rather than our own self funded 6 month warranty. It's a win for us and the customer. Not that a Toyota is a risky car from a liability point of view due to consumer rights (it's at the bottom of the list for risky cars we sell - Land Rover, Mercedes, Volkswagen Tiguan's and Golfs and Nissans being the riskiest. Yes the crapness of modern VWs surprised me too).

@toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 thanks for that you've answered a question for me. One of the Yaris crosses I'm looking at isn't from a Toyota garage. I was thinking it wouldn't benefit from the ten year guarantee.

I’ve had a 2008 and it’s the only car I’ve ever hated. In fact, I just thought a car was a car before I had one.
