Toyota Yaris vs Peugeot 2008 - anyone driven either?

I’m getting back on the road after a break from driving for health reasons, and I’m choosing something on the smaller/cheaper side this time so I’m not risking too much on a car, as secondhand prices have gone up a fair bit lately anyway.
I’ve narrowed it down to two, and I really like both, so hoping some Mumsnetters might have driven one or the other:

• Toyota Yaris 1.5 115HP Icon Auto, 2024, ~28,700 miles
• Peugeot 2008 1.2 130HP GT Premium, 2022, ~52,000 miles

I like that the 2008 sits higher up on the road (easier getting in and out), but I don’t do much motorway driving, maybe once a month, so I’m not sure that matters as much as I first thought. My kids are all off at college with their own cars now, so I don’t need the extra space in the back like I used to either. Has anyone driven either of these? Would love to hear how they compare for reliability, comfort, and just general day-to-day driving.

Toyota gave a 100,000 warranty up to 10 years old as long as you you get them to service it!

I have a white Yaris. There are so many around at the moment! See them everywhere. I preferred my Nissan Leaf for driving but the Yaris Hybrid is extremely economical. I would not rate it highly if it weren't so economical but it's really no fun to drive 🙁. It's a bit tinny too (it's a 2020) and I'm worried that it would totally crumple in any kind of crash even a minor one. Might be as last car was a nice heavy VW Touran but the Yaris does feel a bit cheap to me.

Love a Yaris, have been driving them for over two decades and they are completely reliable.

Toyota every time much better and reliable and last!

I Bought my Yaris new it’s 7 years old now, apart from break pads and tyres it’s a good car hopefully will last at least another 7 years.
I would defo opt for Toyota over Peugeot much more reliable cars

I looking at buying a Yaris Scross which looks more like the Peugeot in your picture.

I had a 2008as a courtesy car for three months. It was nice to drive, but I found having to navigate a touchscreen menu just to adjust the temperature a pain and took my eye off the road. I also found the back window tiny and very high up, so found reversing scary as I couldn’t see behind when reversing. (It had no camera)

This has encouraged me, weve inherited a 10 year old Yaris and I hate it to say im not loving it is a massive understatement.
But its getting a bit easier each time, so maybe I just need to persevere!

What don't you like about it? I love my 18 reg hybrid, my DS has an 18 reg petrol (manual) and I like that too although the controls etc are more basic.

Toyota. They (usually) run forever

I had a Yaris for years, fabulous car. Ran on fumes, cheap to fix..not that it ever needed much.
Was 20 plus years and still going strong when some bastard stole the cat converter and it was written off. 😭

Yaris all the way. Had a Peugeot briefly, hated it. Pile of shite.

Ive always driven a manual but it seems really noisy to change gear (im trying to get used to being more slow/gentle) ...and the other things are me being more snobby about it being v basic!! (It feels a bit light/tinny, lights dont come on automatically, no air con and wind down windows in the back seats)

The Toyota. Ours have all lasted until the rust got them with hardly a mechanical issue.

Wow guys it’s pretty overwhelming what the best choice is! I’m happy to see this as was leaning towards the Yaris having driven it. Initially when I saw the pic on the website I thought it looked tiny but when I drove it I was surprised how roomy it was inside. The only thing I wpild worry about slightly is that if was in an accident it would be totally wrecked cos so small whereas the peugoet has more heft in it.

But that’s my only hesitation cos my own gut feeling as confirmed on this thread points to Toyota - I might ask about its service history too as that would be handy to know if Toyota give that 100k warranty.

Personally I prefer the look of the Peugeot. I appreciate it’s got higher mileage but I’m sure you could find others out there with lower.

What about features though? I changed my car earlier this year and I opted for my current car as it was a lot faster than the alternative one I was looking at. Once I’d decided on that model I looked for one with heated seats and a panoramic sunroof as I really wanted those features.

I own a yaris. Bloody love it. Also if you are nervous, it is an automatic.

I hired the Peugeot. I can't remember what it was like to drive, but it was too bulky and a surprisingly small boot for the body size. I wouldn't buy one.

I love my 2012 Yaris, but utterly hate the more recent ones that have morphed into another blasted SUV. Toyota are a reliable brand but they have abandoned a loyal customer base, my last 3 cars have all been Yarises but my next one definitely won't be.

Yaris for sure. I’ve had two.

Plus that other car looks quite wide and so more annoying to park?

Try the Corolla.

50cm longer and 10cm wider than my Yaris. No thanks.
I think all the designers are inadequate men who think longer is better. It isn't.

Yeah the Peugeot is a really lovely looking car. I was only going to the dealership to test drive it when I saw the Yaris and thought it looked lovely and just tried it out of curiously really, I was surprised how great it felt to drive.

Being used to a bigger car it would feel strange to move to the smaller, but all my kids are away to college now so apart from it being nice to be up higher in a car I’m not sure that I really need an SUV any more.

i also want to get something asap as I live very rurally with bad/no transport network, I live alone have no current car and struggle to even get to the nearest car dealer as they are all in the bigger towns 30-45 mins away. I know this dealer as got my last tow cars from them so I trust them and they are great at sorting courtesy cars etc if something does wrong

Indeed. That engine is known for how unreliable it is.

The Yaris is a much better bet, though smaller of course.

Ah, I've never had a car with lights that come on automatically, Dh has a newer Corolla which does that but I don't trust it and always switch them on manually. My Yaris does have automatic full-beam/dip but it doesn't go back to full beam quite as quickly as I do manually so I've switched that off. I can't imagine ever needing to open the rear windows from the front seat. My hybrid has climate control and DS's petrol one has aircon which isn't as good but OK. I think it very much depends what you are used to. One thing I do like is that they both have spare tyres not those useless kit things.
