Anyone else fed up with all the Millennial and Gen Z chat?

Anyone else sick of this whole Millennial/Gen Z thing?

I'm 44 and have teens... all of a sudden everything that I do is "Millennial". Skinny jeans binned ages ago, side parting gone. Now they want my winged eye liner. The way I dance is "soooo millennial coded".

Everything online/with my kids seems to be tailored to laugh at me. Even when I try to get it right (by not wearing trainers socks) I get it wrong (apparently trainer socks are ok)

I get I should just suck it up as technically I am middle aged and the youth will always want to be different and mock the square oldies but it feels so defined with this generational chat everywhere.

Obviously I should just wear/dance/do wheat I want but it's getting me down!!!!

My teens and I joke about all the time. This morning I wore an outfit I know my son doesn't like...to which he said, 'seriously, that is the worst fit in the world'...and I laughed and wore it anyway as we both knew I would. I literally don't care and neither does he, just banter. He actually thinks I am a badass as I am really fit with good muscle tone which is apparently very cool.

Anyway. I have no problem with my teems commenting on my clothes and I comment on theirs. My daughter raids my wardrobe regularly but we have different styles so wear similar clothes differently sometimes.

I am not really aware of the intergenerational badging though. Don't come across that much.

Son is Gen Alpha and very scornful of TikTok

Very into all the 90s music and laid back simplicity of his Gen X mum and dad.

as someone with blocks of ice feet I’ve been eternally confused about the sock thing.

Menopause has led to going sockless in converse all summer. But I’m close to going back to sturdy boots and socks or trainers and black socks at work (Sainsbury’s comfort ones with the extra thick toe and heel)

I care more about warm feet than my socks!

WarriorN · 23/08/2026 07:44

What’s this about cats eyes?

I always think nothing beats Audrey Hepburn style wise and never will,

Blogswife · 23/08/2026 07:48

It’s a sign of their immaturity. Ignore them , laugh at them but do your own thing . They still have so much to learn !

LlynTegid · 23/08/2026 07:50

I am not fed up but it has become overused and uninteresting.

Riv · 23/08/2026 08:19

The exact same thing happened, and still happens between millennials and boomers. Now it’s more about how easy boomers had it and how they managed to buy homes and not have an expensive university loan but it was about their style when millennials were teenagers. I expect it will be the same for each generation as they reach their teens. Parents just become embarrassing and old fashioned 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just wait until they introduce you to the obscure 90's bands they've just discovered.

"They're called Nirvana, Mum. You won't have heard of them".

Edited

This!

my daughter is amazed that I’ve heard of bands like Keane and The Verve

she was quite disbelieving and accused me of pretending to have heard of them so I could appear trendy 😂

Maybe stay off TikTok? I’m 43 and wear what I want. I know it’s dates with skinny jeans and trainer socks and heels but I don’t care. I wear what suits me and my lifestyle. My teens wouldn’t say a word. They don’t care what I wear.

RaraRachael · 23/08/2026 10:22

@Chipsahoy I'm the same. I wear what I like and haven't mucb interest in fashion.
My kids are in their 30s but never comment on anything I wear as they have as little interest in fashion as I have.

They are amazed that I know about current music and have some of it on my Spotify.

WeddingDressguest · 23/08/2026 10:26

Tell them to fuck off.

Why are they so obsessed with discussing what generation they're in

CapeMylar · 23/08/2026 10:34

I don’t have kids, but I have noticed this is a very tedious preoccupation of the lifestyle pages of newspapers. I feel like I’m regularly being alerted - like it’s some sort of public service to the dangerously out of touch - to some style thing that gen z are apparently laughing at us for in an article written by an anxious-sounding millennial. I was a bit sceptical about whether I was even on gen z’s radar, but I guess not from your post, op!

It always strikes me as annoying that women in their late 30s to 40s are supposed to be worried about what younger people think of them. Even more bizarre that younger people are so interested.

Get off social media @Duvetstay

and start saying to your teens that they’re disrespect is making you feel like crap and to reign it in
