Anyone else sick of this whole Millennial/Gen Z thing?

I'm 44 and have teens... all of a sudden everything that I do is "Millennial". Skinny jeans binned ages ago, side parting gone. Now they want my winged eye liner. The way I dance is "soooo millennial coded".

Everything online/with my kids seems to be tailored to laugh at me. Even when I try to get it right (by not wearing trainers socks) I get it wrong (apparently trainer socks are ok)

I get I should just suck it up as technically I am middle aged and the youth will always want to be different and mock the square oldies but it feels so defined with this generational chat everywhere.

Obviously I should just wear/dance/do wheat I want but it's getting me down!!!!

@Duvetstay I'm 46 so generation X if I got this right. Don't think it matters really. Parents have always embarrassed their teens. I have fun with it and make them cringe even more - it's quite funny if you don't take yourself too seriously. And why would you look for their approval when it comes to anything like style or other? You are a parent and your job is to be uncool and cringe.

My kids know not to mention what I wear.. pretty normal stuff, nothing wacky but I got so fed up with the constant pick pick pick that I lost my temper with them.

but it’s other stuff that gets me down, I’m not allowed to play my music in the house or car because it’s crap and cringe and weird, according to them, a lot of it is unusual but I love it, it’s not rude, violent or anything, more fantasy based or alternative.

Also if I have my photo taken publicly.. there’s been a couple, I had my photo taken with the mayor and a few of our local community group last month which then got shared on Facebook and in the paper, my eldest who is 20 said ewww mum what are you posing like that for, you look ridiculous. I just stood normally with my hands together with a smile.its knocked my confidence a bit and now I dodge any photo because of the horrible comments I get from them.

I Don’t pose right, I don’t stand right, I don’t smile right, I don’t speak correctly, I’m too wacky, I’m embarrassing, blah blah blah

For clarification my kids do mention it and take the piss (don't everyone's??) but it's not that I'm particularly worried about what they feel about my parting or that they're overly mean.

It's more a zeitgeist-y thing, I'm suddenly aware of it in many areas of life

It is very prevalent on SM, surely lots of people are online for work/ social etc in a way that would be hard to avoid trends like this??

I sort of know what you mean but also styles were labelled 60s, 70s and 80s before then. The only reason it’s “millennial” now is that nobody knows what to call the 00s/10s as “noughties” is ugly and “tens” is only 8 years ago.

I’m the same age as you and agree you’re probably just feeling a bit unclear where you fit yourself now. It’s an odd time in life, particularly for women.

my kids are only primary age but I would also add that it’s only if you have teens that aren’t mortified by your appearance and everything about you that you know you’re doing something wrong

So maybe you need to address how much time you are spending on SM?

This. Im the same age as OP and also have two teens and I get none of this bar the occasional “you’re so old” or equivalent comment if we’re talking about something that was different when I was young.

I think it’s clear millennials are in charge now media wise as there is such a 80s/90s influence on music, tv, film etc

Doesn’t bother me at all! Don’t you have the confidence of age and not giving a fuck? I rock my style and I’m proud, who cares what teens say.

For you to be this impacted…. Then it would indicate you’re spending an unhealthy amount of time on SM.

Also your mistake is listening to social media. I’m on it but don’t pay attention to stuff like that.

Give it 20 years or so, us millennials will be the new ‘Boomers’. ‘Ok boomer’ will become ‘ok millennial’.

The way people talk about Boomers now will be how people talk about millennials.

I don’t think there will be the same criticisms levelled at millennials or Gen X as boomers so we will have to agree to disagree.

I think it's funny when my children tell me what was in fashion in the late 90s/00s. I say "No, we didn't wear that" and get laughed at like haha how would you know?? I mildly point out that my jobs in the early 00s included working on a very cool music paper and in marketing for a youth drinks brand - so I know what was in fashion and what bands were doing, IT WAS MY JOB. They literally shake their heads pityingly and say "Sure you did" kindly like you would to an Alzheimer patient going round telling people he is Winston Churchill.

It doesn't matter what children think of your hairstyle. There are many wonderful advantages to being a grown up and not being upset by what children think about haircuts is certainly one of them. Children think all sorts of silly things, which is fine, they don't know very much yet.

Gen X here and couldn't give a fuck what anyone younger than me thinks. I wear what I want, go where I want and do what I want. I love being 57.
