So it's the last day of July. Which means Mitch McConnell has less than 4 days left to 'live'.

Won’t he have an official death certificate for the day he did die?

I had no end of hassle when my ma died with the GP putting the wrong date on this certificate- register office wanted me to accept I misunderstood the actual day 👀 as they couldn’t go against the GP cert - the funeral director was melting down as he didn’t want to be known as the guy who picks bodies up day before folk die ha!

But anyway all paperwork had to match. Or is it different for MAGA?!

I think if I had a hernia which needed urgent surgery, and I could afford private health care, I might make the effort to look up "hospital" and "hernia" on the internet, and having found the hospital with "hernia" in its name, to ring and ask when they had a slot I could be fitted into for an outpatient operation, which was what Paul went to Canada for according to that article. That would take less than a year, I would expect.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/07/2026 12:15

Fair enough. And thanks for the information. It must have been giving trouble for a while, if he was knocked over in 2017 and didn't get it operated on until 2019. You'd think if he was going private it could have been sorted out sooner than that, especially since it "requires urgent surgery to correct". In Paul's favour it is said they need treatment by surgeons who specialise in nothing else, which seem to be available in the Canadian hospital with "Hernia" as part of its name, so that explains him going abroad for his op.

it is said they need treatment by surgeons who specialise in nothing else

This wouldn't explain why Canada (pop. 40 million) has such surgeons but USA (pop. 341 million) does not. If that is indeed the case.

If he wasn't having it done in Kentucky he might as well go somewhere with a world-wide reputation for excellence in this particular thing?

I don't know. I am in no way a Paul Rand apologist! It all just seems strange to me and I am trying to find any reasonable explanation whatever for it. Because let's face it, hernias hurt and may be life-threatening, so waiting a year to get something done about it when you could afford immediate treatment would be peculiar wherever you decided to go!

Seems obvious to me. Canadian Lumberjacks get hernias lugging all them logs down mountains. Americans don't do lumberjacking because they are all too busy sweeping forest floors. No lumberjacks, so no hernia specialists.

Ready.... 3....2.....1....

Oh, I’m a lumberjack, and I’m okay,
I sleep all night and I work all day.
CHORUS: He’s a lumberjack, and he’s okay,
He sleeps all night and he works all day.
I cut down trees, I eat my lunch,
I go to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin’
And have buttered scones for tea.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he eats his lunch,
He goes to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays ‘e goes shoppin’
And has buttered scones for tea
.CHORUS
I cut down trees, I skip and jump,
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women’s clothing,
And hang around in bars.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps,
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women’s clothing
And hangs around…. In bars???????
CHORUS
I chop down trees, I wear high heels,
Suspendies and a bra.
I wish I’d been a girlie
Just like my dear papa.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he wears high heels
Suspendies?? and a …. a Bra????
(spoken, raggedly) What’s this? Wants to be a girlie? Oh, My!
And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!

There is no evidence of that in any of their political choices of the past 250 years.

Except Obama twice, and then there was the popular vote for Hillary Clinton. But I guess it's worth overlooking facts if they don't align with your prejudices.

DB could have an MRI within an hour of it being ordered. However then finding someone to actually do something about it is a different story.

Thank God that issue doesn't exist in the UK. No waiting lists, no staffing issues, no failures of communication. I have a good friend who just almost died in a flagship London NHS hospital after languishing for weeks, developing sepsis along the way, because they couldn't find the 'right' surgeon. Don't get sick in August when all the surgeons are on hols, folks. But the US...

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/07/2026 14:21

Hey, come on! Everyone knows the NHS is wonderful! I have only been waiting three years for treatment to a an easily-operable condition which has meant I have difficulty walking, and often can't sleep, for pain. But I have an appointment to see a specialist in August, and might have that operation this year with luck. No, sorry, not operation; it's a mere procedure, same as having a stent inserted is.

Is it a different Obamacare that Trump and co are dismantling ? As a result of their democratic election ?

Pointing out failures in others in response to ones cited in your own is a great way to come to a dead stop in progress, isn't it ? I could easily cite a load of foul ups with the NHS. However I could also cite the time I broke down in floods when a relative awoke after what seemed to me to be the ministering of angels.

I am trying to work out how broken ribs and a bruised lung gave him a hernia. Because that seems to have been what the operation was for. Is this usual? Aren't hernias usually abdominal or in the groin area, not upper chest?

Upper hernias do exist. For example a hiatal hernia.

RedTagAlan · 31/07/2026 14:43

See what happened when I said the dems should do a bold unified policy like a US NHS. It started a discussion. Now do that in the US and it would wipe Trump domestic policy under the table.

Is that two weeks up for the Trump health plan yet ? When was that ? 2017 or 20018 ?

Ahh wait. His discount online drug store was his plan.

logicisall · 31/07/2026 15:04

I forgot about TrumpRX. How much is this man raking in???

I think possibly your citing the past 250 years was a mistake. The NHS is less than eighty years old, after all, so anything earlier than that is pretty irrelevant to any discussion about the NHS.

I also think that bad-mouthing all US systems and ways of doing everything as a sort of knee-jerk reaction is a mistake. Especially when you live in a second-rate country like ours with third-rate politicians.

Yes, as mentioned above; the diaphragm separates the lungs and ribs from the abdomen, so I suppose a broken rib might puncture it, but I would expect that to be noticed at the time it happened rather than more than a year later.

It can be a stomach issue as well, especially with pregnant women, which obviously resolves post birth. But hernia is a weakness within all of the abdomen, especially if muscles are separated.

I've had fractured ribs following a road accident. It's very painful and easily identified via x-ray.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/07/2026 17:00

Yes, hernias happen all over the abdomen and groin; but in general not in the rib-cage or the lungs. That was what I thought in the first place. He was said to have broken ribs and a bruised lung after being manhandled and knocked to the ground.

Broken ribs are definitely pretty easy to detect; cracked ribs, even. Not that there seems to be all that much to be done about them because they're not easily splinted, but you can know what's happened and retire to bed-rest sitting as upright as possible, and careful breathing, and they ought to mend in between a fortnight and six weeks. (Flail chest is something else again, but I don't think it's suggested that ailed Rand Paul.) Oh, and ice-packs can be really helpful, as are over the counter pain-killers.

It just does seem a little strange that the injuries he suffered in 2017 caused a hernia needing treatment in 2019 but not before then.

The answer is probably the most outrageous and unexpected one. On those grounds I go for a PEN*S EXTENSION!!!

I have no idea if this is an outpatient procedure.😎

In the US, bigger is always better. Now it has to be bigly bigger.

As an aside, in some countries, there's a joke where you add 'US' to things. eg, He's 6'2" ...US. He's really 5'8".

It was a common view in my elders growing up that Americans had big houses, big cars, and big heads.

Possibly. I head that later ...

"Waldorf Salad" is a great documentary about those attitudes.

Perhaps senators should only be allowed to access health care in their own states, unless immediate urgency is needed.

That might focus their minds.
