What amazes me I can remember the words to so many of these. Mind you I was in WH Smith for my copy of New musical express and Melody Maker every week Learning the lyrics etc.

Paul Rogers sang with Free then Bad Company. Peter Green was in Fleetwood Mac but I agree he had a great voice.

I was already a big U2 fan when the massive hype started for their new album, the Joshua Tree. The buzz around the release was like nothing else up to that point. With or without you was the lead single & was released for radio play before the album went on sale. I loved it, everyone loved it so I queued up to buy the Joshua Tree with my mates on the day it was released and it just blew everyone away. Every time I hear a track from that album it takes me back to that time in sixth form.

There are many of course, but the very first song that came into my head was this one

I used to do the same with Smash Hits, although the lyrics were so inaccurate sometimes that I always suspected someone had just sat next to the record player and written down whatever they thought the lyrics sounded like. 😄

I'm the same age, and when I look back now at all the nuclear war themed songs that were around in 1984 it gives me a bit of a chill, because honestly at that age I didn't realise how real the threat was at the time, I just treated it as some sort of cultural motif. I was very naive at that time.

I remember walking in to the local Our Price and the bloke behind the counter putting on (btw there's a lot of flashing images in that video). I'd never heard anything like it. That was my gateway drug in to dance, techno, raves and assorted tomfoolery.
