I think I was 16 when I bought the jagged little pill album, so it would be the song ironic, but that was released when I was 17. But also Common People is a standout one I still always sing when it comes on the radio when driving.

Great songs and I remember them well. I drove my mother mad playing Bobby Davro Honey and The very first time one summer as well 🤣

I didn't realise Bobby Davro was a singer

Light my Fire : The Doors
Had never heard anything like it at that time. Just couldn't get enough of listening to it, especially love the extended instrumental break, even today.

Extreme - More than words. Thought it was so romantic and meaningful!

ListenToTheAirport · 25/07/2026 15:29

Well that would be Everything I Do (I Do it For You). Pretty hard to escape that one the summer I turned 16.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 25/07/2026 15:34

Into the Groove - Madonna

Into the Groove - Madonna

Ditto. Loved it.

BratPitt · 25/07/2026 16:02

Better the Devil you know (Kylie). And World in Motion (New Order) obviously! That was a good summer to turn 16.

Laiste · 25/07/2026 16:02

Along with loads of previous named songs (so many of us must be the same age!) ...

Jack and Dianne.

I remember it particularly because the lyrics say ''hold on to 16 as long as you caaaan!''

and i was 16. And thought 'why would i want to hold on to this age it's shite!'

I doubt the “whole of the internet” will be sufficiently bothered to calculate your (presumably outing?) year of birth. 🙄

She’s not wrong though. Things like this is exactly how social engineering works - little breadcrumbs of information we leave around the internet (by answering Facebook quizzes etc) that can be pieced together by data collectors.

And yes actually I am great fun at parties.

PocketSand · 25/07/2026 16:13

I remember sitting my o levels with an ear worm of bob Marley 3 little birds - don’t worry, about a thing, cos every little thing will be alright. Shit happens. Worrying never helps. You will come through tough times.

Seasons in the Sun, Terry Jacks, 1974. Oh, how I hated that fucking record. There was no escaping it that year - I swear I would have done better in my ‘O’ levels if I hadn’t had to hear that vapid pap whining drearily out from every radio in West Yorkshire, every fucking hour of every bastard day…

Okay, I’m only half-serious. I did grow to dislike it intensely, though. A dislike only surpassed by Bohemian Fucking Rhapsody the following year, but that’s another story.

I loved Seasons in the Sun, but it made me cry. I was 16 the year after that, but my one to remember most is Sailing by Rod Stewart.

(I'm also in West Yorkshire).

Having looked up the number 1 hits from the year in which I turned 16, I'm having flashbacks to a school field trip where a couple of kids from the year below got on everyone's nerves by endlessly wailing, "Xana-doo! Xana-doo-oo-oo!" There were some bangers and some toe-curlers, like every other year.

Two tribes by Frankie goes to Hollywood. Height of cold war stuff.

DilemmaDelilah · 25/07/2026 17:22

Mind blowing decisions by Heatwave. My boyfriend may have been trying to tell me something but I was very sweet and innocent and didn't realise until many years later.
