Does anyone have a little boy who wants to be "a daddy"?

I'm curious. I've got a DD7 and being "a mummy" has been her most stated ambition since she's been old enough to state one. All other ambitions are like "I want to be an artist, and a mummy". I have a DS now who's too young to talk and I'm wondering if he'll ever say he wants to be a daddy or whether that's very uncommon!

Yes my oldest son always said he would like to be a daddy when he grows up.

Youngest son said he didn't want that.

Both in their early 30's with long term partners and no children

DS7 talks about when he’s older and has children. He just assumes he will.

DD11 isn’t keen at all and never has been so will be interesting to see.

My two boys wanted to be dad's and sent their teddies into each other's beds for sleepovers.

That's adorable.

My nephew wants three children, and he's named them, and he adores his baby siblings.

My son loved helping look after the babies at nursery, and we had to get him his own toy baby to look after at home.

My DS, who is nearly 7, often talks about being a dad. Things like ‘how tall do you think I’ll be when I’m a dad?’ and similar questions. He would love a younger sibling as he adores babies. He helps out with the nursery children who attend the wrap around care at school and we’re always bumping into small children who shout his name or give him a hug.

My son decided he was going to have two babies because a baby comes from a seed and he has two seeds (one in each testical - he did the maths). My daughter thought she'd have babies with her brother because when you love someone you marry them and have babies and she loved her brother. They're 15 and 18 now and opinions have changed somewhat 😂

SparkyBlue · 25/07/2026 14:04

When DD was 6 she told a little boy in her class that he was her boyfriend and that they would get married and have children. He was bawling crying that night at home he didn’t want to get married. Hid poor mum had to have a word with me to ask DD to kindly break off the relationship 😂😂😂

I was helping at a scout sleepover .One of the older boys maybe around 11.was helping with the smaller children .He said " I cant wait to have children! I really want to be a Dad" I was lost for words!

My brother wanted to be a coal-man when he was he was 4, (but it never happened...)
Probably just as well, as we have gas central heating now.

Loubissou · 25/07/2026 14:31

DS wanted to be a daddy when he was 4. All the dads he knew were soldiers, so I have always assumed that was what he meant. He is 20 now, he's always been great with kids, but no interest in having his own any time soon.

FunkFunky · 25/07/2026 14:37

For a very long time my youngest wanted to be a Daddy to a son called Trevor and a daughter called January. They’d live in woods and have two dogs called Barry and Margie.
My Daughter was 13 when the youngest was born and announced she’d never be a Mum because kids are far too needy. She’s late twenties now, hasn’t changed her mind and has added boyfriends to the list of needy things she doesn’t want in her life!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 25/07/2026 14:41

My friends thought it odd at the time that my twelve year old was worried about his fertility when he had to have an emergency operation. There was the possibility he would lose a testicke and he was worried it would impact the chances of him being a father.

Britneyfan · 25/07/2026 14:47

My son is 19 now but when he was around age ?8/9 or so we were at a church service and they were doing the children’s address and were asking them all what they wanted to be when they grew up. My son said “a daddy” and everyone fell about laughing! But he did talk quite a bit about wanting to be a dad when he was younger. I think it’s still in his life plan but he’s in no rush these days!

BeSharpHelper · 26/07/2026 19:56

Yes all my boys have talked about ‘their’ kids when they get older , eldest has 2, middle is having first in the next few months, and youngest talks about it quite a bit at 20.
I used to work at a nursery and most of the little boys played at being daddies .

Minasama · 26/07/2026 19:57

That’s interesting. Neither of my daughters have ever said they want to be a mummy!
I don’t believe I did either because I didn’t particularly think about kids until I met my husband in my 30s.

In early primary school my son couldnt wait to be 17
As then he would be able to drive and pick up his 14 babies from the hospital

He was then going to bring them home to live in our house and me and DH were going to have to move out and live in my Nanny's nursing home.

Hes 14 now but still being a parent is high up on his list of things he wants when he grows up.
Though he's decided to buy his own house - round the corner though so I can help with the babysitting

Echobelly · 26/07/2026 20:37

My DS is ambivalent about it - DH says he wanted to be a father from an early age. In fact, he told me when he had an interview for secondary school (it was a public school) and was asked about ambitions, he said he wanted to be a father. I told him I suspect that would have made a strong positive impression as it probably wasn't common for boys to say that.

When my now teen was about 3 or 4 (preschool just before starting reception), he told me he was going to be a daddy when he grew up. He was going to marry Emma-who-bites (who had stopped biting by then but was known as “Emma-who-bites” for another 2 years or so), they would live in a campervan on our drive. They would both have jobs in London. She would do meetings, he would work at the same bank as his daddy so they could have lunches together and I’d look after the babies.

This sounds like my friend's son who was going to travel the world in a campervan loaded up with chicken nuggets and toffees. His mother was told only she could visit (not his dad or sister) and even then she wasn't allowed to stay for too long!

CatInTheRhombus · Yesterday 17:57

My nearly 5 year old talks very casually about things he will do when he is a daddy. If we talk about things we’re doing (eg taking holiday from work to cover school holidays), he will say “oh yes, I’ll be doing that for my babies”. He’s going to wait until he’s 24 to have them though, apparently.

Firebird83 · Yesterday 21:46

My 8 year old DS wants three kids if his future wife agrees with that number, and he’s got names picked out as well. 4 year old DD said she wants to live alone when she’s older!
