Does anyone have a little boy who wants to be "a daddy"?

I'm curious. I've got a DD7 and being "a mummy" has been her most stated ambition since she's been old enough to state one. All other ambitions are like "I want to be an artist, and a mummy". I have a DS now who's too young to talk and I'm wondering if he'll ever say he wants to be a daddy or whether that's very uncommon!

Yep, I think when he went into year 1 or 2, filling out the all about me profile, Ds2 answered "what do want to be when you grow up?" - a daddy!

Sassylovesbooks · 25/07/2026 10:12

My son is 15, and I don't think he's ever said he wants children or to be a Dad!! Of course, as he becomes older, he might, but certainly he's never voiced it!!

No, my ds17 is adamant he doesn't want children. Has said the same since he was at primary school.

My DS also felt like that, he's in his thirties now and hasn't changed his mind.

My friend (female) told me aged around 12, that she never wanted children. She's now 51 and has never had children. Her and her partner have been together since their early 20's, both on the same page regarding children. Some people, regardless of they're male or female, simply don't have the desire to have children.

pizzaandchips2078 · 25/07/2026 10:16

Yes My 7ds tells me all the time he wants to be a daddy. Just one child tho apparently lol. He also wants to be a pilot but I think he's copying his sister dd14 as thats her current want.

VikingLady · 25/07/2026 10:23

My DS said that he wanted to be a mummy so he could cuddle kids and play with them. I pointed out there are daddies who do that too, and he’s reasonably content with that. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a SAHD.

frozendaisy · 25/07/2026 10:25

Ours have mentioned it

I reply
you need a job first!

Yes, and still says it at eleven.

When he was about 7 he was slightly less keen as he thought if he had a baby with a wife he would have to do all the cleaning and looking after the baby, but if he had a baby with a husband they would share the cleaning which would make it easier so he would still have time to play 🤣

Haha my 7 yr old DD told us that she would marry her female friend, “so that she can push a baby out. I don’t want to”.

Mumof1andacat · 25/07/2026 10:30

My ds at about 6 was upset that he couldn't have a double bed as he did have a wife!

CurlewKate · 25/07/2026 10:46

My brother wanted to be an uncle!

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/07/2026 10:53

DS wanted to be a Super Hero Fireman and Astronaut.
He didn't want kids, but told me how to date. Apparently you have to go to McDonald's, get happy meals and McFlurries, "do snogging", then buy a ring and get married.

He's now 20, unemployed and not in a relationship.

mondaytosunday · 25/07/2026 10:55

Yea sure. My son talked about it when he was small.

MrsPapillon · 25/07/2026 10:58

Mine always said that he wanted loads of children but didn’t want a wife so he was going to get them from the big house where the children with no mummies and daddies live. I think he’d been watching too much Tracy Beaker.

He’s 28 now with a partner, no kids, but is a doting cat dad.

Thechateau · 25/07/2026 10:59

Yes. One of mine still talks about it from time to time and he's 17. It's lovely

MrsLFii · 25/07/2026 11:01

My son is 4 and says often he’s going to have anywhere between 10 and 100 children. He said this morning ‘I can’t wait to be a daddy, mummy’ which is sweet. My older brother was the same apparently when he was a child, and he’s now an excellent father to five, so he stuck to his guns!

OneNewLeader · 25/07/2026 11:02

One of mine has been clear from a tiny age that he wants to be a dad. The others don’t want kids as they love their businesses, their freedom and travelling (holidays). It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out.

HermioneWeasley · 25/07/2026 11:03

My DS enjoyed playing babies and would show us in his room where he would put his baby’s cot when he was a daddy.

my DD never had any interest and says she doesn’t want kids

frenchnoodle · 25/07/2026 11:03

I have a boy, for about 3 years insisted he was going to be a mummy.

Didimum · 25/07/2026 11:06

Yes, my DS, 8, talks about having kids fairly often. He loves babies. We have a nanny who occasionally brings her 8m old son and my DS loves helping take care of him.

DS is not especially ‘feminine’ in any other way (for want of a better word). He loves sports, very rough and tumble, loves computer games. But he has a huge soft spot for caring for babies and animals.

FazeleysRoyale · 25/07/2026 11:42

DS asked me where babies came from very young ( while I was driving in busy traffic one day, very random ! ). I told him they come from a special seed that gets planted in the mummy’s tummy ( ok, you do better going round a multi lane one way system in a town centre ). I said he would get a seed when he was older. “ Yeah, when I get a skateboard “ came the reply.

When he was about 10, after our friends, a child free couple, had stayed with us for the weekend, DS mentioned that their family would die out because they had no children. He has talked over the years of having four !

He is now 27 and he and his fiancée had their first baby 6 months ago and all going very well. I’m fairly sure they won’t be having four though.

I commend the way your home is smashing gender norms!!

This is such a sweet thread! My sons have never said they want children. Well, the younger has a life plan that includes having a child when he’s ’arrived’ career and home wise. That’s not quite the same.

It makes me feel I’ve done something wrong, reading about all these lovely family oriented boys.

HerbertPootle · 25/07/2026 12:12

I have two boys, eldest never mentioned having kids when he was little, has since said he never wants kids (he’s 16 now).

Youngest was the opposite, wanted a boy dolly and toy buggy for Christmas as a 2 year old, talked a lot about being a daddy. His nursery had lots of toy buggys and I noticed a lot of the boys used to like playing with them and being ‘daddy’s’. Was very sweet.

Youngest is 14 now and still talks about having kids, he wants 6 apparently. Hes got a few names picked out. He’s the more masculine personality of my two boys, very sporty, plays a lot of rugby, all his friends are male, very rough and tumble growing up. Will be interesting to see if either of them have kids in the future.

UniDaysAcoming · 25/07/2026 12:55

My two boys wanted to be dad's and sent their teddies into each other's beds for sleepovers.

MaggieBsBoat · 25/07/2026 12:58

Throughout hi childhood my eldest would wax lyrical about wanting 3 kids and how they’d all be breastfed and how wonderful it would be. I told him that neither of those things were his alone to choose but that it’s lovely he wants to be a dad.
He‘s now 30, desperately trying to put his partner off having kids. Hah! So it doesn’t last forever.
