What do girls wear in sixth form

No jeans, sweatpants or hoodies allowed and they must have smart leather shoes.

No sixth form I know has those rules

My eldest lived in hoodies and jeans at 6th form. It's good preparation for Uni. What kind of 6th form is your daughter going to that they have such draconian rules? If I was her I'd go as casual and as comfortable as possible within the rules and avoid anything that could be possibly construed as 'business casual'. Could be quite fun being as rebellious as possible.

So I'd suggest: cords, moleskin trousers, chinos, dungarees, mini skirts, maxi skirts, dresses, sweatshirts, jumpers, cardigans, football shirts, tshirts, long sleeve tshirts, sleeveless tshirts, casual shirts (DD1 has a vast collection from urban outfitters), DMs, knee high boots (or go to hell boots as my Dad called them), chelsea boots, loafers, Birkenstocks, mary janes, monkshoes etc etc.

Are there any photos of sixth formers at the school/college on social media? If so, and there usually are, look at those to get an idea of what the other sixth formers will be wearing. Then ask your sixth formers/yourself what they/you would like to wear from that.

When the dress code is like this they're essentially asking the 6th formers to come in office wear. So, smartish trousers with a shirt/jumper/smartish top or skirt/dress.

At DD's sixth form (state) they could wear jeans/joggers/hoodies.
At her old school (fee-paying) 6th formers wore smart suits.
At DS's school (Grammar) - they all wore suits & ties.
At my sixth form (all girls grammar, back in the 80s) we couldn't wear trousers at all - we all wore the tube skirts/long straight skirts that were in fashion at the time and a blouse/top/jumper.
I think I would actually visit the school and see what they're all wearing tbh.

At ds school they wore what they wanted, mainly jeans, hoodies & trainers. The only restriction was offensive slogans on T shirts & football shirts.

We couldn't wear any denim, but otherwise, anything in the school colours (grey, green and white.) Although, not shorts, I discovered in the summer term.

I agree with checking school social media to see what 6th formers wear, and aiming for office wear (though in my current office, I have indeed been wearing shorts recently, as have most if my colleagues. So there, Mrs J!) Trousers, skirt, plain t-shirt, dress, that sort of thing.

My daughters allowed jeans as long as they were not ripped, they didn’t allow hoodies or tracky bottoms. Trainers fine though. normal sweatshirts without a hood ok.

i count her lucky - the grammars round here expect girls in office like clothes.

Ours has similar rules. It's quite common, they have to wear smart clothing.

Personally, when you've worked out roughly what people are wearing, I would create a 'school uniform'. Buy a couple of skirts/pair of trousers and a few suitable tops. It's much easier that way and then they can enjoy more of their own style of clothes out of school!

My DS wore a suit and tie, and DD wore black skirt/black tights/ flat black shoes/ and a top.
Sixth form had to be smart, just like the high school kids had to be smart in their uniform.

DD’s sixth form had a whole a4 page of rules. Was basically office wear, no strappy tops, no low cut tops, no short skirts, etc. I got her 3 blouses which were a bit prettier and more stylish than shirts, she then had a skirt suit and a trouser suit.

my son’s 6th form is similar - the girls wore:
Loose trousers such as linen, skirts either v short or v long, loose sweaters to wear over tiny tops, DMs on feet, scarily similar go what I wore in the 90s!!

My sons sixth form (grammar) is business dress. Boys suits and tie, girls tend to wear very short skirts and blazers!

The "business wear" schools style seems to be (from observation) teeny tiny black skirts that look like something from Ally McBeal, tight white shirts, thin black tights and black slip on shoes that they can only shuffle along in.
The non business wear schools they are all in jeans, hoodies and trainers.

DDs sixth form was the same. Comfortable trousers from H&M or similar, plain T-shirts or simple shirts from Urban Outfitters and plain docs or brogues on their feet. At the time of DD1 no boots were allowed but by DD3 they had relented. Loose jumpers - cotton in warmer months, wool in winter.

A lot of 6th form expect 'office wear' circa 1980. It's nonsense, but you're stuck with it. Our local one was fortunately more sensible, it was clean, not ripped, no offensive slogans. It meant DC could source their own style, mostly from charity shops.

Sixth form college allows pretty much anything. The only rules are no offensive slogans on t shirts and closed toe footwear in science/ tech subjects ( for safety).
Last school I worked in the rule was smart casual. They got current students to model a variety of acceptable clothing at the 6th form information evening. The biggest issue I came across was larger young ladies in ridiculously low cut tops which barely contained them when they bent forward to write. That usually sorted itself out very early on in the autumn term.

These are generally the rules for 6th forms around here.

Plain white shirt, tucked in with school tie* OR a fitted blouse,
tucked in.
● A smart plain black V-neck jumper/ cardigan over a shirt or
blouse (no logos)
● Plain black tailored trousers OR a plain black pleated skirt*(no
straight cut, bodycon or lycra skirts)
● Smart leather shoes suitable for formal office wear (not Nike
Air Force 1 or other trainers, canvas or other casual shoes,
boots or sandals)
Additional guidance
● Skirts must reach at least the end of the longest fingertip
when arms are extended down
● Polo shirts, T-shirts, hoodies or sweatshirts are not permitted
● Denim, chinos, leggings or skinny trousers are not permitted
● Hair style and length must be appropriate
● Only small items of jewellery which are suitable for a school
environment are permitted

Skirt style and shape can differ depending on the school, but they’re generally black and the jumper/cardi is not a requirement for all.

Fascinated that there are still sixth forms that have ‘business wear’ policies, as if preparing students for work in a provincial estate agents.

No uniform or dress code at ours (beyond no offensive logos), and we still manage to send dozens to Oxbridge, and hundreds to Russell Group universities every year. Students wear everything from the ubiquitous jeans and hoodies to dark academia to full goth and everything in between.

Office wear - all the 6th forms I know are the same. Colleges are more casual but 6th forms attached to secondary schools have smart dress codes.

Ours is an exception to that rule.

DD went to a grammar school and in theory had to wear smart office type clothes, with a specific dress code. All the comps I know locally were the same. However in practice DD 's school was a bit more lax than the dress code suggested so she wore mostly DMs, short smart-ish skirts, a plain t shirt or baggy jumper and had to carry a blazer but didn't always wear it. In summer short smart-ish dresses (floral, checked etc) were fine. The poor boys were in suits & ties year round. No sixth forms near us allow jeans, hoodies, trainers etc.

They dress like All Saints round here.
