Do you give tradespeople your Wi-Fi password while they are working?

Do you offer tradies your wifi password? We did this last night for an electrician we've been using for years and a painter we've known for years too. I'm not sure I would for a random that I've not used before who was only round the once...but the painter wanted to listen to the Rest is Politics podcast and couldn't get data...

No I wouldn't. Only people who live here or family/friends can use it. I guess it comes from always being drilled in 'do not give out your passwords' and also some people get up to all sorts online.

I don't want anything to link back to our WiFi. Although I believe everything dodgy is blocked but you never know.

Maybe it might be seen as silly but that's just me.

TonTonMacoute · 23/07/2026 19:52

I wouldn't for a one off, but regulars yes. Apart from anything else there's no mobile signal where we live, which could make it more difficult to do their work.

TourdeCrema · 23/07/2026 19:54

I’ve never been asked by any trade people

had my bathroom done last year

had plumber in previously

had building work done 10 years sho

never been asked

ErrolTheDragon · 23/07/2026 20:09

We’ve never been asked, but if we were I suppose we’d give them access to the guest network.

Lulu1919 · 23/07/2026 20:46

Never been asked !

Jk987 · 23/07/2026 15:37

I wouldn’t mind doing so. Can always change the password if worried about security.

But you would have to change it on everything you use.

thatgreenjuniper · 23/07/2026 20:54

I have never been asked, but I can't think of a single reason why I would say no.

cinquanta · 23/07/2026 20:58

If they asked they would get access to a guest network. Not our main one.

clarrylove · 23/07/2026 21:00

Only the guest network. For security reasons. Son works in cyber.

mugglewump · 23/07/2026 21:01

Sure, no problem.

Springtimeinsunshine · 23/07/2026 21:37

How do you find out whether you have a guest network?

Edit
No i wouldn't give it out for randomers either. Only family and close friends.

EmeraldRoulette · 23/07/2026 21:55

blimey - so few people worried about security?

I've never been asked. I don't have a guest network set up because why would I bother?

This thread is a real opener to me!

Dbank · 23/07/2026 22:18

I would only share an isolated guest network, and have a QR code on the fridge for guest to use.

FictionalCharacter · 23/07/2026 22:21

TheSmallAssassin · 23/07/2026 15:53

We've got a separate guest network, so would give them access to that.

Same here.

Olderbutt · 23/07/2026 22:23

I definitely would if asked, especially by QR code but 5g is strong here, so Ive never been asked.

BillieWiper · 23/07/2026 22:23

I'd find it unprofessional seeing as most business is conducted online to some degree. They should use those own data. I've never been asked though. I guess I'd give it but it wouldn't look great.

Denim4ever · 23/07/2026 22:24

Only once ever, to get a signal to show me the tiles he was suggesting for the path

PatioDwellers · 24/07/2026 22:26

Our signal is dreadful so it can be helpful. I was quite happy to hand it out to the two when I did. One as I was sending him a picture. One wanted to show me the house he’s buying. It was the guest network…

Well that's what guest networks are for so I am not sure why you started the thread?

PatioDwellers · 25/07/2026 07:38

@MustTryHarderAndHarder well because I was interested in what other people do, and there are a fair few replies ranging from Never! To of course, why wouldn’t you? And, also, only recently got a guest network, and would have given out password to trusted trades or someone who needed it, before we did too.

Fair enough but if you had said at the beginning that you had a guest network then the answers would have been very different.

CIaudiaWankleman · 25/07/2026 09:41

No I wouldnt.

We have good mobile data coverage where I am so there is no need.

For the people aghast at those saying no, literally noone has ever asked me this, ever and we have had a lot of work men in at various times so it cant be that vital or important.
