Is it possible to have a good day out at Legoland in the summer holidays?

We have never been, had planned to bunk off school for a day last month but couldnt quite bring myself to do it.

Im so worried about going and it being a let down for dc due to the busyness/queues. Is there plenty to do aside from rides for 9 and 10 yr olds?

@JudithsDead that's a good suggestion actually and they do some nice extra Xmas stuff.

Yes there’s always a little extra event like make a Lego snowflake/snowman, and if you pay the extra to see FC (all very well done) they get a Lego set as a gift! We’ve always found it a nice day out. No splash pad/water rides or shows round the lake but the rides a 9/10 yo will want to go on are all open.

No ferries from the UK to Denmark anymore. But you can fly to Billund. Go for a weekend and visit Legohouse too.

I’m most bitter about the trips we took to legoloand when the dc were small.
It’s about half an hour from us so not far but we went a few times, felt like we’d been robbed and had a fairly shit day.
The q bot things helped us to get on more than 2 rides in a day, the dc enjoyed the show with the pirates diving into the water but I just felt they let in far more people than they have space to accommodate and the experience is the poorest in terms of value for money compared to chessington and Thorpe park which are all equally quite close to us and priced the same/similarly.
Mind you mine are all older now, the oldest 2 drive themselves to Thorpe park if they want to go (and they don’t anymore!) and I drop the youngest for the day so I no longer have to suffer.

I was also going to suggest Billund. Probably best to go as part of a holiday because as well as the original Legoland and other Lego themed attractions there's a big Center Parcs style fun pool and activity centre. If you go in the second half of August, Danish and other northern European schools have gone back, so lower demand.

@Abouteffingtime It was about 15 years ago. Nectar or club card for the ferry and drive either side. Someone above said there are no ferries to Denmark anymore, which sounds mad. I think Billund has it’s own airport though and I think I’ve seen a legoland bus at Aarhus airport if you want to try flying.

It’s lovely most of the time but awful in August . There are Lego statues, parks, cinema and sweet shop too but the rides are mega busy especially the ones for older kids. If you go go before open. Queue to go in and then race for the big rides . Then potter about after that.

Danish Legoland is good, as outlined previously, and also German Legoland. Both have their own campsites so you can stay quite cheaply with park tickets included. Both also have more expensive accommodation available as well.

I went in the Easter holidays and it was awful. Huge queues for really basic rides. Who wants to wait 45 minutes to go on a teacups style ride. Honestly such a rip off.

Billund does have an airport, it's literally opposite Legoland.

This is the way to do it! All the smaller kids leave at 2pm. The queues by 3pm are much shorter, and by 4pm are 5mins! So we aim to arrive 11am ish, do any rides with short queues, have lunch, then start planning our attack as the queues shorten. It's great with older kids (10 and 6 here) who don't need naps and understand the value of using the last part of the day!

Also if a ride breaks down when you are in the queue, go to guest services for a fast pass - which can then be used for any ride not just that one!

But not all schools have the same INSET days?!

Most schools have one the Friday before May half term or the Monday after, so yes that will be busy. But we usually have a random one in mid June which we always use to go to a theme park and it’s usually fairly quiet, especially on a Monday which isn’t popular for school trips.

OP we have Merlin passes and aren’t planning to go to any of the theme parks all summer as just can’t be bothered with the queues. We may do Legoland if the weather isn’t too hot or rainy and just do splash pad, parks, miniland, and maybe a couple of rides with short queues. But only cos we have the passes, it wouldn’t be worth paying full entry to do those things.

We have gone a few times in the summer and yes the queues can be long. Remember a lot of schools break up early so if you had missed the last day it wouldn't necessarily have been quieter and also for any schools still going there would be the possibility of them having a trip there.

At the ages of your kids I would say you do need to go in the main season. We have gone at Christmas time and I don't think all the big rides are open then (I think there was a big thing about last year being particularly bad).

Would doing two days be an option?
Could you look at the ride list and plan which ones would be definites to go on? And then plan a route/prioritise?

There is miniland to also walk around and the brick to build/play with Lego. Sometimes they do shows (not sure if that is currently the case).

I went in the school holidays in 2020 when ticket numbers were restricted. Still had to queue for over an hour for the Ninjago ride.

We visited in a wet non pupil day one October. It competed with IKEA for marriage testing levels of stress and misery. The only time we ever caved in and paid to jump the queues. Waiting over an hour for really basic rides. The Lego models themselves were sad and worn out looking. The shop at the end was a special kind of hell with loud, frantic music. My poor undiagnosed at the time autistic DD had a complete meltdown. And then there was the queue to leave the car park you have to pay for and a four hour drive home. Worst day out ever and we enjoyed Alton Towers and Blackpool!

Definitely look into Billund. We went in a May half-term when all hell let loose and Windsor traffic ground to a halt. It was wonderful.
Adult DC went recently, flew to Billund and had an Airbnb. Did the waterpark and Lego House too. Had a fantastic time.

I’ve only been in “quiet” season - a weekend in spring. We were lucky with the weather and except that you miss out on the water play area id suggest this is a better bet. I think it depends a lot on what your kids enjoy / really want to do - mine love Lego itself and so we passed a fair amount of time in the Lego town / building areas which were loved and not busy. Even in March queues were past an hour for many rides. We bought 3 queue jumps and also pre planned with kids what they really wanted to go on and rushed there first (also got there early) so we did the biggest request before it got busy and had a few jumps for later in the day. In March a small selection of rides were walk on / 5 min queue but at the tamer end (carousel, big wheel, etc). For younger children this works fine. I would not attempt it in summer hols personally unless the Lego itself is the main draw

No. Bitter experience.

We usually have a nice time but we have a ride access pass and Merlin passes (so we can go multiple times and not feel we have to do it all in one day). It would be miserable without the ride access pass I think.

Haven’t been for a few years but we went often when the kids were younger. Yes it was busier in the holidays but we always had a great day. We’d pick a couple of bigger rides they really wanted to go on, rush to one of them and go on it first, and then pick a point later when we were ok to queue for an hour for another one. Knew which ones to not bother with as queues were stupid (the little indiv boats).

Then fill in the gaps with the less big rides which were still fun and had shorter queues, go round mini land, spend time in the Star Wars bit, maybe the splash park if we could be bothered, and the pirate playground. Kids liked all that just as much as the rides. We’d eat sandwiches in one of the long queues for lunch, and get chips in the cafe at the top after all the rides had closed, waiting for the car park to empty. Head out as the last bit of shop and cafe shut and the car park was much emptier then. Also have food in the car for the way home.

eta - we would often have v good days like this where we’d been on 2/3 bigger rides, 4/5 smaller ones and lots of pottering about, and we’d see people on Facebook saying it had been a NIGHTMARE and they’d only been on ONE RIDE and it was HELLISH and we just didn’t know what they’d been up to!

I love lego and theme parks and if I ever go back there it will be too soon. It wasn't even summer and so busy. The sky lion queue was 1hr 40 mins, so we didn't get to go on that. Lots of things looked tired and grotty, peeling paint etc. Yes the lego models are good, but you are paying a lot to go see some ornaments.
