Anyone else not going on holiday because they just don’t want to?

After many years of not being able to afford to go on holiday my children have flown the nest and I now find myself in the position of being able to afford a fairly simple holiday

but I’m not going because I don’t want to

my colleagues and some family cannot believe I don’t want to go away

I’m perfectly happy pottering my own house with my dog for company -last time I went away it was incredibly stressful and a lot of money got not a lot of enjoyment

it can’t just be me though that’s a bit of a homebody

surely?

Surely the no1 reason for not doing things is not wanting to?

I feel the same. I am 66 and retired 5 years ago. I am going away for 3 nights in September with my son. (In the UK).
I go to the odd music festival.
But in general I can't be bothered to go on an actual "holiday."

I am the same, sausagesandwiches. Going on holiday does not interest me.

Yep, I go away for a day or two with friends say, two or three times per year but I can’t be bothered with airports or ferries. I’m lucky to live in an area people visit for holidays so I don’t see the need.

Yep. Holidays cause way too much work for what they offer to me. Quite a few people I know, from a wide age range, are choosing to not go on holiday either here or abroad.

I'd love a holiday. If it could be guaranteed to be good. If travel wasn't horrible and stressful. If other holiday makers weren't arseholes.

But I've been on a lot of holidays and only about 1 in 10 has been lovely. Not a good success rate. Not worth the investment of time, hope or money.

I'm feeling the same. But i now live near the beach. So if I have time off work and the weather is great, I have everything i need on my doorstep.

We do go on holidays . However! Sometimes it’s disappointing, too many people about for me! Really stressful packing and unpacking -!: prepping. I sometimes wonder if it’s worth it! But I do love to see the world and travel

We’ve done self catering holidays and I don’t want to stay anywhere that is less clean and comfortable than home. Unfortunately, it seems that the 5 star properties and my expectations don’t match.

I’m always disappointed and then I resent the money wasted.

I’m the same, I’m 66 and haven’t worked for a few years but had other responsibilities. I do go away in the UK quite often but I haven’t been on an abroad “holiday” since 2019. I’m not against it but I’m not interested in pursuing it

We were away and it was fine...but honestly we also missed our comfy bed, decent coffee etc. I was glad to be coming home! Have a stay cation and all the stuff you want to do from your own home.

ive spent a fortune for a mediocre time, far too many people everywhere and I’m just bored without my home comforts, also the bed here is awful and I haven’t slept properly since we arrived which isn’t helping my mood.

I’m sure there are many, many people who aren’t going on holiday because they don’t want to go on holiday.

I agree holidays can be hard work and expensive but I think I'd go demented stuck in the small town (perfectly pleasant, just a bit boring) I live in with no break away every now and again. Sometimes a day trip somewhere further afield scratches the itch. My proper holidays are usually spent doing a fair amount of sightseeing - I don't do resort holidays. I actually feel most satisfied with city breaks - just knowing everything is on my doorstep and there is lots to do. I don't think you should spend money on something just because that is other peoples expectation. Maybe you'll feel more like a break next year if you don't do it this year. Plan a nice day trip instead? Less financial obligation and you get to come back to your own bed at the end of it.

We live in a house and own a narrowboat. I love the time we spend on the boat, it is a different aspect of our lives and once we get home again we get to do all the things that we love about that part of our lives

I can imagine this. I already prefer a U.K. holiday or one that is a 2 hour flight or less.
I have travelled loads and been everywhere I want to go really, except I would like to see more of Wales.

YANBU and I envy you being able to make this decision. I am starting to resent and dread them. I have young children though so I feel duty bound to make the effort for their enrichment/experiences, etc. but if it was only for me, perhaps I'd rather potter around where I'm familiar with a dog too. One day, hey!

Love my bed, my gym, my dog, my friends & pottering around at home / in my city (I do live in a pretty cool place though - lucky!)
Holidays are expensive & often disappointing.
Would rather just book some days out & treats here 😇

Not been on an actual holiday for over 20 years and I haven't been on a plane for about fifty years - I just can't be bothered. I have been to visit friends/family for a couple of nights, and even that only once or twice. As a pp has said, I resent paying a lot of money for a mediocre time. Now I am in my 70s and retired with children grown up, I don't have to pretend I like lying on a beach or have to put up with being called miserable because I don't want to bake myself in the sun. No thanks - I'm all for people travelling if that's what they like, I don't judge them, so I don't see why they think they have the right to judge me.

Sounds reasonable OP! Time to potter at home is actually really nice and it goes very quick, ha. I've not been on holiday for over 20 years, first of all because of being self-employed and then having pets. I'd loved to have travelled more back then but now I like my own bed too much.

Edited to add - I have been overseas many times, childhood moving around and then for work, just only a few actual holidays overseas.

No need to go out of the vast and beauteous county of Yorkshire for a holiday. I’ve come to realise that. Taken decades.

But you don’t have to go anywhere near a beach on holiday! Nor sunbathe! Holidays are about things you enjoy. I’ve never gone on a beach holiday in my life.

Last went on holiday in 2016 (Germany).
Haven't bothered since and can't see any reason why I would go on one again.

You can also 'holiday' by not doing things you don't want to do.

So time off work can be a holiday. Not doing housework etc can be a holiday. Visiting local attractions or sitting in the garden with a book and a nice drink and snacks can be a holiday. Being able to sleep in your own bed and not having to go to the effort to pack, make arrangements for pets, plants watered etc while you do it can be a holiday.

I do like to go away but I always have a week or two at home to do what I please each year (no DC and I'm quite capable of not spending the time cleaning or 'doing jobs').
