This was like 35 years ago and as a child/teen she always used to say to me don’t drink coke straight out the fridge as it could give you a heart attack.

I obviously took it with a pinch of salt and assumed his tragic heart attack was a coincidence and not caused by a cold drink.

I’ve just realised, wasn’t that sort of coke was it! I’ve messaged another relative who’s confirmed my suspicions 🙈

Pepsi was created as the ‘non cocaine’ version, which the good Christian kids in America drank!

That would be why it tasted like liquid cardboard then!

I’m only realising now in my 40s all those tales of people “choking on peanuts” was anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is caused by a severe allergy to peanuts which can cause swelling and block the airway.

Peanuts have a warning on the packet to not give to under 5s because of a risk of choking due to the size and shape as that can also block the airway. So young children can actually choke on a peanut.

My mum used to make us gargle with TCP if we had a small throat.

The poor dogs used to get dettol baths quite regularly to keep them hygienic. I was put in a dettol baths less frequently.

My mum has had two phases; tcp for everything when I was a child, she now uses germolene for everything whether it’s her ailment or the dogs.

It’s a bit like victory v losenges that originally had booze and narcotics in them - which is why they did soothe a sore throat!

Dr Collis Brown Tincture, wonderful stuff!

Edited

Good grief! I’m 62 and only just realised that my parents used to drug me with morphine when I wouldn’t sleep! 😮

Apparently (according to google ) the original recipe contained

ether
chloroform
chlorodyne (containing opium, cannabis, and alcohol)

and they were traded in the playground by children who enjoyed the mind numbing effects !

I think they took the chloroform (and the rest) out in the 60's, we used to gobble them when I was a child (60's) they were very warming on a cold day.

My Aunt used to dose her kids with Phenergan syrup to make them go to sleep, this was considered quite normal. She also fed them on Carnation evaporated milk when they were babies (again normal in those days)

Yes we used to get phenergan as children
I remember one news years eve late 70s my parents had some friends round who brought their children all five of us kids had a dose of phenergan and all slept soundly whilst the adults were in and out of other peoples houses partying and doing the conga.

I’m not sure my own grandmother ( very deprived upbringing, from a townland with four other inhabitants) would necessarily have grasped the difference between ‘drinking Coke’ and ‘doing coke’. I mean, she thought lesbianism was ‘invented’, because where would people have got the idea from? (Don’t start me, I know.)

Coke the drink didn´t have cocaine, it had coca leaf, which isn´t the same thing at all!

Cocaine is extracted from coca leaves. Very different to cocoa (pods), which you might have confused it with.

Morphine content in kaolin and mophine is 0.0092%. Use by date is 2011. 😂. I had some last week
