Longleat safari park no longer accept blue light card.. I’m so disappointed. They only accept emergency service ID now. I work in education and can’t only assume I no longer fit the bill 😒

plenty of private sector workers get “perks” attached to their jobs whether that’s a discount on their shopping for supermarket workers or private healthcare, car loan schemes etc. the point with the blue light card is that those working in the nhs / teaching etc do not get other employee perks. They pay to join a scheme which businesses can choose to be part of or not.

public sector workers (outside the nhs etc) usually have access to discounts via Edenred or MyLifestyle etc.

my point being many employers of all kinds and various reasons are able to offer access / discounts / preferential terms to their employees. The blue light card is just one of these.

fwiw I’m not eligible for one so have no skin in this game. It just surprises me how vehement people are against those scuzzy nurses and teachers given half a chance

My cousin works in admin in a school and gets a BLC. It's not all frontline workers by any means and I imagine it's too expensive for them to offer a discount to the very wide range of people who get the card!

My income tax is still income tax. So it goes towards whatever is funded by income tax funds. Which includes the NHS. In the UK the largest portion is allocated to healthcare.

The idea that you have that workers in Tesco pay for the NHS and I don't is nonsensical.

my husband works in logistics. He gets a cheap car loan scheme

my sister works for a charity. She gets access to various sites for hospitality events and to venues hosting exhibitions / concerts etc

ny bil works for a bank gets gym membership / private healthcare / interest free season ticket loans.

my sil works for a food manufacturer. She gets discounted products

another friend works for a massive multinational consumer goods manufacturer and gets discounts on everything from high end make up to washing powder.

its totally normal for jobs to have benefits. It’s something one considers when choosing an employment opportunity

I think you are missing the point. I definitely want NHS nurses and teachers to get perks.
I am less sure about people in office jobs getting the perks just by dint of the organisation they work for.

I do an office job. I know my job land many other office jobs add a huge amount of value

But we aren't out there "on the front line" so, for instance during COVID, I could stay totally safe, cocooned at home even as I was working very hard

We don't have to deal with angry or distressed members of the public (or at least not face to face) and we aren't on our feet all day in a heatwave

Your income tax from NHS wages does not add to the total money available to finance the country.

This is just a fact. It is tax from the private sector (and a tiny part of the public sector which produces profits) which finances the public sector. You are given the money you pay in tax from that pot and all you are doing is returning it, there's no extra money.

BLC is a private members club. Nothing to do with being worthy.

Those benefits are normally paid for by the employers.

That's different from people shopping in Tesco subsiding a teacher or a nurse who might well have a better paid and/or nicer job than they do.

I am right and you are going to feel a bit silly for continuing this argument about it when you work it out.

Of course you are not paying your own wages, how can you? The money has to come in from outside that circle somewhere. It comes from the private sector.

If I have £100 and I give you £50 and you give me back £10, there is still only £100 in that system. That's how taxation and paying for the public sector works.

What about for those of us in equally important, low paid roles who have to pay full price?!
We are also disappointed but can't do a huge amount about it.

I'm entitled to a charity worker discount to lots of places, and although I'm entitled, I don't really bother because of the faff of admin. Although I've chosen a low-paid sector, I still have a great salary (HRT), I don't think the discount is warranted for me.

These prices are calculated to offer a price point that enough people can access these offers whilst still commanding the best price available for the vendor.

I think a lot of PLaces have started doing that since teachers were added to the eligibility for the Blue Light Card.
