Who would you back in the increasingly crowded Clacton contest?

The Clacton field is up to about fifteen candidates and it has officially passed satire. The Monster Raving Loony Party - 43 years of deliberate absurdity - are now, structurally, the sensible option: they're up against a bin who's leading the national preference polls and a favourite whose only current job is "Steward of the Manor of Northstead", a manor that has not existed for centuries. (That last bit is real — it's how MPs resign. Farage attacked a space warrior for being fictional while holding an imaginary medieval job.)
The finance site's "racing desk" has done a full form guide of the field:

Their note on the Loonies: "They built this course, and now everyone rides on it." Their betting guidance: "the bin, each way."
Genuinely — who's your money on at this point?

Nominations approach, the field has swollen to fifteen, and the going is soft. Our racing desk assesses the card, including the first sensible vote in Monster Raving Loony history.

Could you explain how you know that daily exposure to widespread spewing of contempt doesn’t tip closet psychopathology into overt action?

Well it can do. Jo Cox is a very clear example of this. We didnt hear so much about her death though. I wonder why...

Binface

Gardenandseawitch · 14/07/2026 10:32

Count Binface.

Farage's face on the night if the bin wins will just be priceless.

Being aggressive and contemptuous toward online doesnt look so safe now that we know that psychopaths are reading the vitriol and taking it as permission to bludgeon to death.

This thread is not contemptuous in the slightest though.

People are laughing. It’s the opposite of contempt

Bin FaceTime.

I am exasperated at the other attention seeking ‘novelty’ candidates. They will split the vote and rob Clacton of the ultimate power of satire.

I know everyone is very amused at the whole thing, but actually I am a bit worried about the dilution of votes too. Some of the entrants look like they’re doing it seriously, and will get votes.

Is the Binman actually canvassing I wonder? I heard he said that if he won he would try and do a serious job and look for how he could better the area etc, he’s not just a joke entrant, he’s a serious entrant too.

What do you mean? Jo Cox's death was very much in the news, both at the time and since.

It’s frustrating, but it also further destroys Farage’s credibility. His main competition is a bin, and he’s going to turn around in a couple of months and say this gave him the mandate needed to avoid the investigation? He’s a laughing stock

Keep Britain Tidy - vote in the bin.

PencilsInSpace · 14/07/2026 10:43

For the voters' sake I was really hoping there'd be one or two sensible, viable independents. Looking at the BBC's list there is one who seems 'normal' but doesn't appear to have any relevant experience, e.g. being a local councillor, and there's the Forward Party candidate who looks about 12 years old. I note that out of ten candidates there is not one one woman.

So given the willywaving shitshow that it is, Binface FTW!

How do you get a vote?

Live in the Clacton constituency. How else?

Jonathon Harvey - Bin Face - would probably make a decent MP, actually. He clearly takes an interest in politics, has donated excess donations from his campaigns to Shelter and has pledged to move to Clacton and do his best as their MP should he win.

I bet he would do a better job for constituents than half our MPs.
