I'm looking to swap from hand wash/shower gels back to soap and soap dish but want to prevent the sludgy soap dish memories of my youth.

I'm between two options. Both are Joseph Joseph - if you have either of these or use a great alternative, I'd like your review please.

I found the Joseph Joseph one in a charity shop. I looked at it for ages wondering what it was as they are so small. When the light bulb came on, I paid my £1 and
Ive found it really useful. The smaller
footprint means it. can go on a small sink in my cloakroom, the upright position of the soap dries it out as it is exposed to air for much of the soaps life. The drainage works perfectly and it is easy to clean.

The JJ ones work well. They pop apart for cleaning.

I’ve also tried the shampooand conditioner from this company; it was quite good, but I’m still searching for a replacement for the Ethique which I used for years - no longer sold in this country sadly. Might try that Nope next.

We’ve got option 2- had it for 7 years no problems,easy to clean once a week when I do the bathroom.
I’d worry the first one might rust.

Another vote for a magnetic soap holders. Nothing compares to you.

A soap net works. You can hang it so it doesn't have exposure to water. There is no dish to worry about and it lathers through the net. Once the bar is done, you can wash the net and reuse.

Oh that takes me back. I remember when washbasins had a soap recess. Always had a bar of Imperial Leather in it when I was a child. That’s over fifty years ago though. I can’t remember a recess on a bath.

I have a bamboo one, lattice on bottom with holes to drain away liquid, 4 years old and still perfect. Bought it from a “green” shop so guessing it’s not branded

I use the Kitsch shampoo and conditioner bars. They helpfully come in respective S or C shapes, and have their own little bags for hanging to dry - no sludge!

I can't help wondering why basins and baths don't have a soap recess any more. Perhaps in the interests of being eco-friendly and reducing our liquid soap and shower gel in a plastic bottle consumption, we should campaign for all new basins and baths to have them as a basic requirement.

I also use these.

My bath has one, but my washbasin doesn't even have room for a soap dish which irritated me intensely until i bought a magnet one as discussed above. Life changing honestly! Also we have a shower in the bath and it's a relief having reduced the chances of soap sliding out of the recess into the bath which it did quite often when it was wet.

We have option 2, had it a few years and still looks good.
Easy to clean as comes apart. Ours is outside of the spray zone of the shower, else it fills up with water. If you feel it's getting a bit full of water in the bottom you can just tip it out through the slot on the back.
Easy to clean, separate the sections, squirt with whatever you use, leave a few mins, scrub and pop back together.
It's not huge, we use imperial leather and that's probably as big a bar as you can get in comfortably. If you had a round soap you might struggle.

Magnetic soap holder 100% I hate cleaning slimey gunk out of the dishes, soon get fed up with them.

Yes to magnetic soap holder. They're so convenient. Only thing is they fall out once the soap gets to small but then what you can do is put the smaller ones into a soap net and use it in the shower.
The French soap company also have some lovely ones that attach to an arm - apparently were very popular in French schools. I think they look fab but the soaps to go on them have palm oil in so I haven't tried them.
The Friendly soap company are my favourite.

For next to the sink, this Muji porcelain tray with the matching wire stand (sold separately) which looks quite nice and lets the soap dry:

For the shower, suction holders which are large enough to hold Nesti Dante soaps - pretty easy to find online.

I have that Muji one that @WrinklesShminkles linked in my kids' bathroom, on the side of the basin. Can confirm that it does indeed make the soap go manky and sludgy. It probably wouldn't if you drained it manually frequently but kids

I have kind of inverted-u-shaped metal one with holes in for my soap in shower. But while it stops the soap mank/ sludge, I find big bars slip off it. I'm off to investigate the magnetic ones (my grandparents had that back in the 80s!), as I think that might be the solution to all my problems.

Soap on a rope is your answer.

When we moved into our house there was an outstanding build-in soap dish recessed into the wall next to the bath in our all-turquoise 1960s bathroom. I miss it!
