I'm looking to swap from hand wash/shower gels back to soap and soap dish but want to prevent the sludgy soap dish memories of my youth.

I'm between two options. Both are Joseph Joseph - if you have either of these or use a great alternative, I'd like your review please.

I'd get option 2 as it's on offer and half the price of the other.

Oh yes I know what you mean like a sort of tiled in soap dish. How times change. Maybe it’s time for these features to make a come back.

I went with a hybrid option - 2 pack of option two and a 2 pack of magnetic holders.

I needed 4 - kitchen sink, toilet sink, bathroom sink and shower.

I did consider 4 of option 2 but I'm curious as too how effective the magnetic option will be. I guarantee it will be interesting for my pre schooler for a while!

I just stick a bottle top into the bottom of the soap and use the lid of some foodstuff that I have finished. Soap lasts for ages and less plastic to dispose of.

Use a slatted dish- no sludge.

Also, use good quality soap

We've got No 2 for bathroom basin soap and it's the best soapdish we've ever had by a mile (and I have tried many). Tip out the water once a day or so, proper clean once a week, keeps the soap bar nice and solid, minimal
mess, compact and stays put on our slightly sloping basin side.

I have found the same and to be honest we use Dove beauty bar which is sort of arched so that the air gets underneath and it doesn't get sludgy.

A rented flat I lived in had this, which worked well and looked super classy

Another vote for option 2, had it years, no more manky soap dishes, works well

We had one of those when I was a child. IIRC a lot of people did (1980s but may have been in bathrooms of an older model🤔).
I also remember the magnetic holders - as a PP said, no idea why they went out of fashion - perfect idea and design!

I have several of option 2 and have been very happy with them. Shampoo and conditioner wise, the best I've found are the Lush 'Honey I washed my hair' shampoo bar and Soul and Soap conditioner bars. This is the only combination that hasn't left me with a residue build-up, but I imagine it is quite individual to your hair type

I like the look of that rotating soap holder.

I've wondered about swapping to soap, but I remember it being very drying. Horrid stuff. So if anyone has a recommendation for something that is not more expensive than Original Source shower gel I'd be interested.

Dove soap is good and non drying and olive oil soap is great (but expensive), but I tend to use Simple soap.

I've had both, they still get scummy.
I gave up and got marble/stone soap dishes. Much easier to clean, too

Our bath has two. I wish it didn't as

1. We don't use soap
2. They hold water so even if we did use soap, it would turn the soap into sludge
3. As they hold water, they are difficult to clean. I end up using vinegar to break down the limescale or whatever it is that builds up in them.

I have this and it looks good but gets mouldy underneath which won't come off. Great if you prevent that

That's a brilliant idea. You'll always have to wipe some soapy residue of something, and this sounds better than having to deal with a little tray full of sticky something.

We have number 2. Easy to clean and when it needs it it goes in the dishwasher only thing I find is that it doesn't for bigger bars and sometimes I need to trim them or cut in half

Magnetic soap holder is the best. My daughter has a cork soap dish from lush for travel and her shampoo has faired much better than mine in a plastic one. Haven't found the right shampoo yet but I am using a conditioner bar from gruum which is surprisingly good.

I use soap in the shower and handwash for the sink. Soap never gets sludge as it dries out in half open container. Xx
