Honest opinion: would this annoy you? You’ve planned a night out with a friend and they send you a text beforehand to say they are looking forward to meeting up but wanted to let you know they had to be home in time to watch the England time tonight.

We met at 7pm and finished meal and drinks around 9.45pm (I live walking distance from the restaurant). Friend is English but has no interest in football and was clearly annoyed.

Dinner and drinks and home for 10 sounds like a perfect night out for me these days! 😁

As she has every right to be. You've cut the evening short and rushed her through it making her feel totally like no priority.

Doing the decent thing and admitting you care more about football than her and properly rearranging would have been far better.

She needs to appreciate it’s the World Cup. No I would have said the same if I was meeting someone but next time check the times properly.

I think the only letting her know late is annoying and rude, but not the fact someone wants to watch it.

I would have been checking where we were going to watch it after the end of the previous match.

I don’t think I’d like football to be chosen over a night out with me.

Unless you explained this timeframe to her when you arranged to meet, she has every right to be annoyed. You prioritised the match over her. I wouldn't have arranged a night out on a Workd Cup football evening

No it’s fine - glad it was local and you got home in time. I was at a bbq last night and we ducked out early to come home and watch with our DDs - the host didn’t mind

If you normally have a late night together, it was annoying that you didn't check the time of the match in advance and ask if she wanted to postpone your evening out. This was a case for 'I'm so sorry that I got confused about the time of the match, I want to leave at 9:45 which is much too because I can't bear to miss it. Sorry! Drinks are on me tonight.' Not a brusque 'I need to leave at 9:45. '

To be honest I like to get home about 10 anyway, nothing to do with football. I get annoyed with people who want to meet at 8 for dinner (so you know it will be nearly 9 before the food comes) as it doesn’t suit my digestion or internal body clock

Can’t say unless you tell us how late the evening would have gone on otherwise. And also if friend was eg paying for a babysitter, or travelling a long way.

I love football and understand wanting to watch it, but announcing very last minute you were changing plans and not being remotely apologetic would piss me off as it’s rude.
