Honest opinion: would this annoy you? You’ve planned a night out with a friend and they send you a text beforehand to say they are looking forward to meeting up but wanted to let you know they had to be home in time to watch the England time tonight.

For a normal run of the mill match, yes.
For the world cup, I think I'd just offer to go somewhere to watch with them. It's a very irregular occurrence.
I say that as someone who will be going to bed before the match starts.

Ok. I’m the one who sent the message (probably obvious😅) and think my friend is extremely pissed off. We are meeting for a meal and a drink. I got the game times confused and thought the England game was at 2am, hence the late notification.

If reducing from 5 hours to 4 I wouldn't much care. If the usual was dancing til 2an and she's legging it at 9pm then yes.

If it would now be that you are going to rush through dinner and drinks then I would be a bit annoyed.

If the night would naturally come to an end around 10pm anyway, not such a big deal.

However, better still would be to invite your friend to watch with you at home, or to suggest you go on to a pub together to watch.

You should probably be friends with me, my best friend and I went to the cinema to watch a creepy film, it was just the two of us in the cinema until a lone man came in and sat at the back … terrified because it was something like candy man or mimic (it was years ago!) … turns out the World Cup was on at the time and England were playing lol … we had no idea the WC was even on lol

I would be annoyed at a last minute change, especially if its a rare night out due to other responsibilities etc. A bit if a waste of a babysitter for example.

Yes. I'd rather you cancelled altogether than came out and spent the evening clock-watching. I'd be disappointed you were more interested in football than our catch-up but I'd rather you postponed to a more convenient time than gave me a half-arsed evening.
