To think we aren't outliers ?

Im 5 foot 3. DS is 9 and 131cm. Surely we aren't outliers height wise ? People feel the need to tell us we're tiny constantly. A little odd no?

Isn't 5'4" average?

I'm 5'3" and don't feel short. I don't feel tall admittedly but not a munchkin.

I have a 5ft1 friend who absolutely fetishizes her own height, and makes a big deal that she has a tall husband, and that "men like small women". Funnily enough the only person I know whose ever made similar comments is a small-chested woman who confidently asserted that "men like small boobs".

It was mega awks because the other people present were me (massive norks), my other flat-chested friend, and the other friends' boyfriend, who burst into laughter before stopping abruptly.

My own mum said I was calling her fat when I said that she was short.

So in my limited anecdata, small women definitely have a weird thing about being small.

I don’t think of 5’3” as very short but that said dd has just finished year 9 and at that height is the shortest in her year.

ForDucksSake · 07/07/2026 21:10

I'm 5'2 and no one ever comments on it. Why would they?

Ozgirl76 · 07/07/2026 21:11

I’m 5ft 3 and the only people who call me tiny are my teenage sons. In general life I feel like I’m a similar height to most women, apart from a few outliers who I think of as unusually tall.
Funnily enough one of my sons is 5ft 6 (average for his age) and he has a load of tall friends and says he feels short (although isn’t bothered) and my other son is about 5ft 5 and towers above his friends even though he’s one of the youngest in the year - so I have no idea what genetics are going on there.

I'm 5'4 and have always been called short. Which is weird to me because I've never felt short. I've had a couple of women (past friends) who commented on it ALL the time. They were around 5'9, and think they said it to try to put me down somehow. Funny thing is, I literally didn't notice the height difference between us. They were just weird about it.

Really? That surprises me but I suppose we are all getting taller by generation

Still seems strange though.

FuzzyGalgo · 07/07/2026 21:44

I'm relatively short at 5'2, but I'm also chubby so I've never been referred to as 'tiny.' The only time my height really gets a mention is when my DH or one of my DS put things in high cupboards which they forget I can't reach!

ChaToilLeam · 07/07/2026 21:52

4'11" here, so definitely short, although far from petite and dainty. I'm afraid I don't eat like Tinkerbell or drink from a thimble. I'm also gobby so woe betide the idiot who points out my height like it is some sort of surprise to me.

Would love to be a bit taller, like 5'3"! Would save me a bit of hemming! 😀

At 5ft 9, I'm not only the height of the average man, I'm the height of the average human. Which means everything is at least the right height for me!

See round my way almost all school dads are over 5 foot 10

Yes- I think it is generational tbh- my DC’s generation is definitely taller on average than my parents’ but yes, I was quite surprised that there is literally no one shorter than her ( I guess it’s a relatively small cohort- 55 girls so possibly just not representative). It’s also not a v ethnically diverse school so the average is probably slightly higher than UK average. That said, there are quite a few around 5’4-5’6 so it’s not like the others are all giants.

Girasoli · 10/07/2026 06:47

Yeah, I think it just depends on the cohort sometimes. DS1 is 141cm at 10 (which google tells me is taller than average) but he's one of the shorter boys in his class.

I'm 5'3" and don't feel particularly short compared to other adult women (I agree teenager girls all seem really tall now).

5ft3 is not tiny
