Anyone else finding themselves supporting DRC?

I'm a football fan, and I usually get behind the national team, even though often as individuals they're not very likable, but in this game they've been so awful, and DRC so up for it, I find my self thinking it will be a shame if DR Congo don't get anything from it.

Iocanepowder · 01/07/2026 18:49

Hopefully DRC score again so i can get some help with bath time 👌

LoopyGremlin · 01/07/2026 18:53

@BeamsssWhen it’s Olympics then I would support Team GB and even in other sports I’d support an English person (golf, tennis, cycling, athletics etc) but I just can’t support England in football. It’s the way the commentators go on and on!

I don't particularly care about football. But I'm currently sat in a pub in glasgow (where I've travelled to from England for work)

Never have I ever met so many DRC fans in my life 🤣 the loathing of the English here is something to behold!

I was in Liverpool when Arsenal played PSG in the Champions League final. You've never met so many Frenchmen with scouse accents. I found that odd too.

There are probably more DRC fans in Glasgow than in DRC!

WhereAreWeNow · 01/07/2026 18:56

Yeah, I'm not into the football but I do find myself hoping DRC do well.

HauntedBungalow · 01/07/2026 18:57

Yes. Us Scots have a long and friendly history with DRC.

stokiemum62 · 01/07/2026 18:57

Nope

Same in wales. No true welsh support England. Never

CadiFfan · 01/07/2026 18:26

Yes! Im welsh, always support the opposition.

Do the Welsh have any culture of their own other than disliking England?

Words · 01/07/2026 18:59

The sooner they get knocked out of the stupid thing, the better. I am currently living in radio silence.

No. No, they don't. There is no culture in Wales. None whatsoever. Just pure blind HATRED .

weetumshie · 01/07/2026 19:00

I’m Scottish, although have lived in England for over half my life. I support ABE…

HauntedBungalow · 01/07/2026 19:03

Everyone does this. Thirty years ago when Senegal beat France, English pubs were full of newly identified Senegal supporters.

Really weird to be English and supporting anyone but England. Very performative.

This 100%

Imagine if English fans posted about the Scottish or Welsh teams in the way that some people are posting here. This blind hatred of all things English is very wearing.

(I’m Canadian btw so no skin in the game)

WildClover · 01/07/2026 19:13

So glad England won!

RaraRachael · 01/07/2026 19:15

I'm Scottish but don't subscribe to the ABE stuff

I know, can you imagine! The blind hatred is so unpleasant. Most English people I know would cheer on any of the Home Nations in a sporting event against another country.

Can you imagine what Scottish and Welsh MNetters would be posting if English fans were actively hoping they lost. It's been interesting to see people with no skin in the game pick up on it.... I was listening to some US and Australian commentary about the anti-English sentiment coming from Scotland and they also noted that the hatred mainly flows in one direction. It's not a good look for them.....

HumbleKatey · 01/07/2026 19:20

For the 100% effort they put in, for the whole match, DR Congo deserved to win. Having said that I’m glad England got over the line. We have to find a new level if we are to beat Mexico on the next round.

MaturingCheeseball · 01/07/2026 19:21

I’m half Welsh. Hate the Welsh. Bunch of chippy losers. Always ecstatic when they lose in the rugby. The only thing Welsh about me is short stocky legs (and Bonnie Tyler hair).

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2026 19:24

Mexico is probably a game too far tbh, but who knows?
Ivd not watched them play , but they don’t seem to have any problems. England have work to do

I agree. Move to Congo?

PrincessOfPreschool · 01/07/2026 19:32

Not performative, no. I'm 'English' but I was supporting DRC as I grew up there and also it means so much to them, a country who have been (still) in absolute hell. Their home fans weren't even allowed into the US, all their fans in the stadium are living abroad. Most of their team have been brought up abroad because their country is in such a mess - war (very very ugly war full of rape, torture etc), ebola, hantavirus. I would never begrudge them a bit of joy and hope.
