What to do about cleaner in this heat?

My cleaner travels from the other side of London. She’s due tomorrow. I think probably the right thing to do is tell her she doesn’t need to come and pay her anyway.

But I’m in two minds and interested in what other people are doing?

It's not just hot, it's a danger to life.

40 people have already died in France due to the heatwave.

They died from drowning, not from iver heating

aurpod1980 · 24/06/2026 19:31

Mine cancelled on me

Reallyneedsaholiday · 24/06/2026 19:31

I'd tell her not to come, and pay her regardless. If she genuinely seems bothered by this, I'd suggest that she spends an extra hour next time comes over (but I wouldn't push her to do so).

KmcK87 · 24/06/2026 19:38

I’d probably offer her half pay and tell her not to come. I’m not loaded enough to just be giving loads of money away tbh and I’m also a cleaner and will be cleaning tomorrow 9-3 in a place that doesn’t have air con or even windows that open. If I didn’t go to work tomorrow I wouldn’t get paid a penny.

Tattybye87 · 24/06/2026 19:41

That's is very kind of you. Im a cleaner and a few clients have cancelled on me today and tomorrow. Which is absolutely okay with me because I'm melting 😂 no payment offered which is totally normal. No service provided, no payment Which I expect. The ones who haven't cancelled have been super generous with the refreshments which is greatly appreciated 😊

GlomOfNit · 24/06/2026 19:55

I wish I had a cleaner! 😂Somehow, being very very hot in a cluttered and slightly mucky house feels worse.

I think you're definitely doing the right thing. Cleaning in extreme indoor heat is unthinkable. Cleaning your house isn't essential; giving her, essentially, a hot weather bonus is a considerate thing to do and I'm sure she'll remember it. And maybe she has young kids who are being sent home halfway through the day.

I say, if you CAN be nice, and can afford this, then why not be nice?

Don't you have a cancellation policy?

it's absolutely not ok to cancel a service at the last minute & not pay (at least 50% if not the full amount)

@KmcK87 it's nithing to do with being loaded! If you can afford a cleaner, you can afford a cleaner. Getting your toilet cleaned doesn't make it more or less affordable.

do you get sucked pay or holiday pay at your job?

Janus · 24/06/2026 20:04

I’ve done this twice this last month or, cancel and pay anyway as it was 30 degrees. Can’t even imagine what the tube must be like! Mine were very appreciative and I think it’s nice to treat them with kindness. Our school is shut tomorrow and I’m in the south so it’s going to be roasting.

Anywhere near a GU postcode?

'Fraid not.

It's looking to be a couple of degrees lower tomorrow than it has been today (here in North Hampshire) I'm dog sitting for a friend, I love their dog but their air con is another bonus!! 🤣

Imisssleep88 · 24/06/2026 20:08

My mum is a cleaner and if you were kind enough to say don't worry but still pay her I know it would be appreciated but then you can imagine.

Same. If I'm not working, I'm not earning but some things are just not worth the money and I'm not sure how on earth you can physically clean in those conditions.

😢😢I'm relative near some RG post codes too. Cold drink of your choice well stocked in the fridge! Kettle/coffee machine too. No kuds or pets....

thought about moving ??

🤣

Given that most of the tube lines had severe delays today I think you are making the right decision. Cleaning in this heat would be very arduous unless you have air con.

Hampshire too, it was so hot today! I used to live in London and the tube in summer is brutal!!!
You lucky thing having aircon tomorrow, enjoy that, not jealous at all 🤣

Theworldsgonemadagain · 24/06/2026 20:11

I don't think cleaning is the main problem, I've cleaned my house today. I would not want to be getting on sweaty public transport in this heat. Like pp has said offer 50% payment.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 24/06/2026 20:12

I messaged mine this morning and told her not to come and paid her. She was very grateful.

Again. If people can afford a cleaner, they can afford a cleaner whether their toilet gets cleaned or not. It's simply a choice of whether to be a decent person or not.

Greenwriter76 · 24/06/2026 20:14

It’s kind - & I would prob give the option not to come too to be honest - but for example, I’ve not stopped cleaning my own house because it’s hot, and I doubt others would, and we’re not getting paid for it so 🤷‍♀️
Earlier and for a shorter shift could be a compromise?

Myskyscolour · 24/06/2026 20:17

Our cleaner came but I told her to take it easy and leave early, basically a light top up clean only.

Doing the odd necessary thing at home at a time of your choosing is nothing like going all out to clean a clients house.

im keeping in top of the bathroom (before I shower), the dishes (hand washed, mostly mugs & glasses tbh) changing my bedding so it's fresh & cool, getting laundry done (but the machine does the hard work & dried on the line, so just hung up:/folded)

I've dusted a little & wiped table/coffee table etc

but there NO WAY Henry Hoover or steam mop are getting a turn until at least Saturday!

Delphigirl · 24/06/2026 20:24

Told her to stay home and paying her anyway.
mind you she is 72!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/06/2026 20:27

I would definitely offer the same.

Blueskiesahead24 · 24/06/2026 20:40

I’m a cleaner, have been for over 10 years. Today I cleaned six bathrooms, plus hoovered, washed, changed beds, dusted blah blah. I got home and cried. My t shirt was soaked and the sweat was stinging my eyes. I had no choice but to work as a single parent with an autistic child, however if someone had been so kind as to still pay me but tell me not to work, I would’ve been forever grateful.

I have no issue paying for a cleaner but I wouldn’t want to pay for something I’m not getting.

Im employed so I get sick pay and holiday pay. Self employed cleaners aren’t and this is reflected in the hourly rate they charge or so we’re always told. Some cleaners are charging £35 ph. I couldn’t afford to pay out £70+ for something that I’m going to have to just do myself in this heat after working a shift cleaning at my job. I would offer half as a good gesture or offer them to still come and do light duties. Saying that I would only hire a local cleaner though.
