Men that you've been surprised to find have a partner.

Have there been any men you've known who you were astonished to discover were coupled up? If so, what were the factors you imagined would have put potential partners off (i.e. physical appearance, dress sense, demeanour)?

Yep. Same as the last one.
I think he met his match in Ivanka though she was far too bright and beautiful for him.

I'm not sure how 'bright' it is to marry a twat like that so you can get some of his money.

I am more aware of how mismatched many couples are than anything else. They seem to be chalk and cheese. I know three couples like this.

Do you mean personality wise, or maybe physically
really tall men with petite ladies for example

Personality and lifestyle wise.

I have experience of this. Worked in units where convicted rapists and child abusers of ALL ages still have visits from partners who just don't believe the crime they have been convicted of. Some female partners were lovely and educated and could easily find another boyfriend. Unbelievable really.

Given that there are women who will go and marry violent murderers in prison, nothing would surprise me. There is no bottom to how low some women’s standards are.

The upside being, you know where they are at night. And they could be doing 25 years

Morepositivemum · 20/06/2026 14:36

One of the most angry women I’ve ever met was married to one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. I met them together and she was like a different person, it was mind blowing. Back in work the biggest cow you’d ever meet, absolutely thrived on making people feel bad!

Error404FucksNotFound · 20/06/2026 14:37

Several.
Each of them has been a nasty, woman hating sack of shit.
I have been amazed that they've all had partners considering how much they show their contempt for women.

Yes, you would think that even if the narcissism and dishonesty did not put women off, the scruffy haystack appearance would.

people may be sharks in eg politics etc but when with another person they can be different etc

FirstdatesFred · 20/06/2026 14:40

Not quite the same, but sometimes I see couples, particularly where one or both are very reserved/passive/shy and I’m fascinated about how they got together as I find it hard to imagine how it happened in terms of who made the first move, the other person responding etc!

LondonLass2026 · 20/06/2026 14:41

No, none. What an awful thing to say.

I once had a client who was a very posh, well spoken, middle class, lady with her own high end dress boutique shop, always imacculately dressed, etc.

Turned out her husband was a scrap man, with the stereotypical run down truck, who drove around town picking up scrap metal that people had left out, rough as a bear's backside, every other word was F*, and looked like a tramp!

Could never really understand how they were together as they were polar opposites.

Suspect one business was financing the other. I'll leave you to guess which...

I instantly thought of another one -
Rupert Murdoch - amazing really

I wasn’t surprised that he has a partner, because that’s how I met him, but every time I see them I am even more surprised that my sister can stand her useless drip of a husband, who as well as being completely wet is also entirely ignorant and uninterested in anything. Talking to him is like talking to a flannel.

Hotandpointy · 20/06/2026 14:50

DH has a mate who neither of us can believe is married to a woman. We both thought he was gay for ages, he’s very camp!

Trump or Wayne Rooney - but money talks.

honeylulu · 20/06/2026 15:26

It's not just looks though. Sometimes the less physically attractive partner (ok usually the man) has something else going for them - successful, talented, intelligent or very funny/charismatic etc.

The ones that really baffle me are where the woman is gorgeous and successful but the man seems to have little to offer in any department.

A former colleague of mine was not blessed in looks, overweight, lazy, selfish and a bit dull. When we met his partner (later wife) we were amazed at how beautiful and articulate she was, a university lecturer no less.

Also former neighbour, largely unemployed, bald, chubby, alcoholic, fair bit older than his gorgeous hard-working wife. He treated her disparagingly and openly leered at other women. They did split up but only because he found someone else, even younger and also gorgeous. I really didn't get what women saw in him!

Favouritefruits · 20/06/2026 15:34

This isn’t really what you were asking but There was a Dad at school when my youngest was at primary, he was lovely so camp and extravagant I had no doubt in my mind he was gay his work in cruise ships (stereotypically) and his demeanour, his dress sense everything in my mind told me he was gay. He talked about his partner ‘Charlie’ all the time. Well how wrong was I! Charlie was very much a women. That experience has taught me to not judge anybody ever!

shuffleofftobuffalo · 20/06/2026 15:48

I try not to be too surprised. However there are two people at work who I’m surprised could find anyone. They are both summarily dreadful - brash, loud, he’s lazy and massively sexist, she’s an utter control freak quite narcissistic and manipulative. They are married to each other!

It astonishes me that Boris Johnson could find one woman to tolerate him, nevermind numerous women.

I actually had a major crush on him.... still would shag him to be fair 😂

My eccentric hoarder neighbour who is very scruffy and dirty, house is disgusting, layers of grease and mould all over kitchen, house so full you cant walk properly....his wife is a fairly well known children book author, always smartly dressed and quite glamourous !!
