Men that you've been surprised to find have a partner.

Have there been any men you've known who you were astonished to discover were coupled up? If so, what were the factors you imagined would have put potential partners off (i.e. physical appearance, dress sense, demeanour)?

Stupidity. It continually astonishes me that people don’t find extreme stupidity the ultimate turnoff. But that’s an equal opportunities thing, not just men.

Somehow Trump has got married 3 times, proof you can fool some of the people all of the time.

I’m curious what your agenda is here? Why have you asked the question?

It’s maybe like a lot of things here - idle conversation to pass the time. Things don’t have to be deep.

I used to know two people - a man who was a mechanic, scruffy, always saw him hanging out with his mechanic friends, bit unfriendly - and a woman, teacher, lots of friends, very sociable, and it turned out they were married. I never saw them interact (we all lived in an extremely small place), they seemed such different people really. You would never have put them together at all.

My male, extremely camp, midwife wore a wedding ring. This was back in the very early 2000s - even civil partnership didn’t exist, never mind gay marriage. I assumed he and his partner wore it because they considered themselves married. It never even crossed my mind he was married to a woman, until I bumped into him in the supermarket with his wife.

I should say that by child no.3, despite his somewhat camp mannerisms, I realised he had pretty stereotypically male interests - I mean, he’d definitely have been thinking about the Roman Empire on a regular basis.

I get this often, I dress well, always clean, quite edgy/alternative/boho, my husband is what people call chavvy, joggy bottoms/shorts, polo tee guy. (He does dress up nicely though, when he can be bothered) He's fairly quiet and observant, where as I'm very social and outgoing. We get a lot of I'd never of put you two together. Been together 17 years and married 10. He's my person and I wouldn't have him any other way.

I had a manager once who I would have sworn was gay. He used to flirt openly with one of the men on his team. You could have knocked me down with a feather when I found out he was married with two daughters.

If you mean Stephen Hawking, he was a pretty famous multi millionaire.

This may or may not have made a difference.

The awful Hawking was an adulterer.

A guy named Mark, who I had to train. His hair smelled so bad I couldn't get near him so did it remotely. His clothes were greasy and his teeth looked furry. I figured he was single till I got an invite to his wedding. I couldn't believe anyone could stomach sharing a life or bed with him.

Former colleague who was convinced of his own greatness while being very very uninspired at work, later found out he’d had a string of jobs lasting 18 months to 2 years. He was 40 but you’d have believed he was straight out of uni he was so naive about work. Extraordinarily pretty, lovely bright partner, great job, who was supportive of his every job move….

I worked in townie bars & clubs when I was a student back in the 90s and the number of perfectly nice young local women who were coupled up with moronic violent thugs astonished me. Their mindset seemed to be that having any pissed-up cretin on their arm was better than having no boyfriend.

While at the same time many of my lovely, quiet, geeky male student friends couldn’t get girls to give them a second look. Crazy.
