What could Andy Burnham do as PM to improve daily life?

There are some negative threads about Andy Burnham this morning so I wanted to have something a bit more positive and look at what he could do, if he becomes PM, to help improve our daily lives.

For me it would be:

  • re-nationalise water and utility companies and trains
  • reverse the national insurance hike for businesses so they can start hiring again and do more to support small businesses in general
  • a one off wealth tax to add funding to the defence budget
  • reform the student loans system, improve access to apprenticeship and also do more to help job seekers over 50.

He could resign and let somebody else have a go.

If you nationalise water, the companies will have even less money than they do now for investment into infrastructure etc. It will only slow down improvements.

Why do you think they will have less money? They won’t need to pay their shareholders. And the government is in a stronger position to renegotiate their debts and reduce the millions they spend on debt repayments and interest.

Decide to stay in Manchester as Mayor after all?
Alternatively, make such a hash of things that Labour get thumped at the next General Election!

Flamingcoming · 19/06/2026 09:45

Nothing really. We need an end to the party politics and back stabbing and we need to employ people long term to try and fix the economy. Anything he does will have minimal effect as we are in such a shit state.

Yeah cos that’s what governing a country is like. Ffs.
It’s my turn now, give it to me, I want it - like toddlers fighting.

The debt issue we have in the U.K. the financial crisis of 2008( a world issue not a Labour issue),Brexit, Covid (a world issue not a Conservative issue), are significant, serious and deep. They can not be sorted by repeated changes of government and they will require us all to be uncomfortable for a while.

Frequent changes of government and direction are damaging, we need a slow, steady plan. These one line posts demanding change by people who think changing a government is like changing your knickers are mad.

End right to buy
Reform compulsory purchase powers so that abandoned properties can be brought back into ownership
Provide a budget for local authorities to buy up properties for refurbishment into social housing (to accelerate the timeline for new social homes)

Reform rules around Children’s homes so that it’s harder for private equity to run these
Commission a study on how government or third sector can provide regional children’s homes
Provide funding for Local Authorities to provide minibuses for SEN kids reducing taxis

Run a campaign to get people into social care jobs
Investigate how to provide training and progression for these roles
Consider something like student loan write offs for staff in care with degrees (in the US there is a scheme for public service debt forgiveness)

Use citizens assemblies to consult on reducing welfare

Rejoin the customs union

Agree to use special administration to bring Thames Water into public ownership

Reduce the paperwork for youth Saturday jobs

Why do you care so much about Sadiq Khan given you clearly don’t live in London and are completely unaffected by his mayoralty?

Sack SK yes please. A Londoner here who has seen the city go to shit,

I know! people that don’t live in London are absolutely fascinated by the man. It’s hilarious.

A Londoner who doesn't understand that Khan is an elected mayor and it is not in the remit of the PM to 'sack' him? Sure...

Join the rather large trading block which most of our near neighbours are in. That would boost the economy by between 5 - 8% over the next few years.

Change National Minimum Wage so under 23 are cheaper than people 24 plus. That would really make youngsters more competitive in the job market.
I agree with reducing NI on employers.
Get rid of triple lock on state pensions.
Set up cross party group to look urgently at the care system. The lack of care for people leaving hospitals is the reason of effective bed blocking. This in turn leads to people being treated in corridors in A&E. 😡

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 19/06/2026 10:11

"On your first point, where is the money coming from to pay off shareholders in those companies? If your answer is along the lines of 'screw em', how would you feel if all houses were nationalised without any recompense?"
Also ' screw em' would be to loads of pension funds, many public sector which would have to be shored up by government.

England don’t subsidise Scotland at all. We get a budget from Westminster and from our own tax powers and this is what the Scottish government decided to spend it on….nice bit of ignorant xenophobia. Do you feel the same about free prescriptions in Wales? Ask yourself why David Cameron was desperate to keep the union? If he wanted to save money surely he could have sacked us off….

So you want an MP who has never been elected as Prime Minister in a general election to sack a mayor who has been directly elected? Not a believer in democracy, then?

Minimum wage for under 21 is lower already, and under 18 lower still. What would be the point of introducing a new band for 21-23?
