If your sons have moustaches and mullets ...

... are you, like me, longing for them to go out of fashion? My eldest (21) has had his mo since last Movember and my youngest (19) grew his a short while later. The mullets have been with us for a few months too. I guess some people must find them attractive, but I'm not in that camp and would love to have my clean-cut boys back.🙂

I find it fascinating. Most of my 21 year olds mates look like they’ve just stepped off Neighbours in the early nineties and my mid twenties daughter met me in town basically looking like me in 1994.
One of my teens is cultivating a mullet which he’s proud of and desperately trying to grow his ‘tash into something less wispy!
I’m pleased we’ve not had any takers on the Alpaca do. I think that would drive me crackers.

My 13 yr old has a mullet. He's got gorgeous curly hair and I think it looks great. He's showing his personality and is brave enough to experiment. Good for him. He doesn't quite have a moustache yet

Following the trend every second teenage boy/young man is also following is hardly being brave.

My thoughts exactly.
Not brave.
We have more sheep than alpacas.

Octavia64 · 15/06/2026 09:26

Yeah it’s not a good look.

my son (thankfully) just does short but I really struggle with it.

therockingbird · 15/06/2026 09:31

I have a very grown up hairy 13 yr old who’s got a full on curly mullet and moustache 🥸 he’s proving very popular at school with the girls much to my dismay! That said - he does look really cool and is embracing the look and it really suits him. He’s also a rugby forward and they all seem to have this look so we roll with it until the next phase.

I blame benson Boone. It’s all his fault 🤣

I don’t think he’s to blame. When we first took DD to University in 2019 there was a surprising number of Mullets and moustaches. It hadn’t reached our part of the world by that point so it was quite a spectacle.

Chipsahoy · 15/06/2026 09:33

My young adult son has a very neat and trimmed beard and moustache. He looks ace but I love well trimmed beards anyway.
My youngest boy had a mullet which looked lovely with his curly hair. He was 6 then. He’s older now and had it all shaved short back and sides with curls on top, same as his brothers.

TomatoesintheGreenhouse · 15/06/2026 10:25

I too would've laughed five years ago - but now I think my daughter's male friends look really hot with that haircut!
Still not sure on the moustaches though!

BulbousNose · 15/06/2026 11:49

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 15/06/2026 08:22

Yes, if you actually mention it to them or try and control them.

Sniggering about our children now wearing a hairstyle that was social death when we were kids is totally harmless 🙄.

It’s not just a bit if a giggle though. OP is apparently “longing” for the look to go out of fashion and getting all twee about wanting “my clean-cut boys back!” Another poster has made unnecessary digs about people being like sheep just because they have a fashionable haircut. By definition, a lot of people have to do something for it to have become fashionable!

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 15/06/2026 12:05

YANBU OP. I thought mullets and moustaches were awful in the 80s and they’re still awful now.

InfoSecInTheCity · 15/06/2026 12:10

Just dig out a picture of their dad with a mullet and moustache in the 80s that should put them off. It works wonders at the minute with my 12 year old daughter when she says she wants whatever the fashion is and I go bleary eyed and say ‘that’s what I was wearing back in the 90s when it was in fashion the first time, you’ll be just like me!’

Iexpecttobetired · 15/06/2026 12:12

Yep, all the teens around here have perms, mullets and moustaches. I welcome it as I generally find teens intimidating but they would have to do something pretty extreme to look scary when styled like queen.

SkippitySkoppity · 15/06/2026 12:15

I suppose there's not as much choice or variety in the male grooming world. Hair is basically all they have to experiment with. It felt like those big Victorian beards were everywhere from 2012 - 2022. Now they seem to have dipped in popularity a good bit and more stubbly beards are in. I think the mullets can look good, the taches less so. Both will age dreadfully but that's part of the fun!

OttersOnAPlane · 15/06/2026 12:17

No one else singing Army by Ben Fold Five?

"Grew a moustache and a mullet, got a job a Chick Fil A..."

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 15/06/2026 12:20

Owner of an early-20s son. He had (note past tense) a moustache. His sisters had an extremely rude description of his appearance, leading to a quick shave. He hasn't gone down the mullet route... yet

To my middle-aged eyes, it's a hideous trend. But it's totally harmless, and it gives me a good chuckle.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 15/06/2026 12:24

My 12 year old is still going through his meet me at McDonalds hair style at the moment 🤣 can’t wait to see what else he goes for as he gets older 🤣

gummywitch · 15/06/2026 12:24

I kind of like the updated mullet version lots of youngsters sport with sides taken in. My youngest DS had a curly one with shaved sides this time last year. It was like a hybrid of that popular graduated shaved sides, curly on top, style all the youngsters have, rather than an 80s type mullet. Denmark hosts a mullet competition every year, apparently!!

Nofeckingway · 15/06/2026 12:26

I think it's their turn now . When I think of some of the styles in the 80s , 90s , it's total cringe . I had it all . Looking like Human League , long Renaisse perm like Julia Roberts, chopped like Annie Lennox , Grunge ...makes for some laughs looking at old pictures . Then I have SIL who never changed her Lady Di style .

I rather like it boys . What is the female equivalent? Anything is better than the fake tan , false eyelashes , thick brow TOWIE look .

Xiaoxiong · 15/06/2026 12:32

My DS14 is going for the Kurt Cobain look at the moment. It looks great for about 10 minutes after it's been washed and then it just looks so lanky and greasy.

It could be worse, remember the boys with crunchy mega-hold gel spiky hair of the early 00s...

Sgtmajormummy · 15/06/2026 13:10

I think the Paul Mescal haircut with an inch or two over the collar is fine- he does unshaven, full beard and mustache. But he’s naturally curly. Please no perms.
A 1980s style with fully shaved sides and very long back reminds me of the Mohican nephew in Outlander- not a great look.
But at the end of the day, they have to make their own mistakes. They’ll be accessible on social media forever and ours are kept safe in dusty shoeboxes!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 15/06/2026 13:16

My eldest has one. The urge to start singing Cotton Eye Joe is strong.

LlynTegid · 15/06/2026 13:17

Agree they look awful, but most fashions do. Worse still are most of the beards men have, because they are too lazy to shave each day.

At least neither fashion involves money spent on things made in sweatshops,

ViciousCurrentBun · 15/06/2026 14:48

Wonder if it’s regional as I have seen no one with a mullet or a moustache round these parts. Moustaches always look creepy.

jay55 · 15/06/2026 14:50

I don’t have kids but both looks, and the combo make me giggle on a daily basis.
