If your sons have moustaches and mullets ...

... are you, like me, longing for them to go out of fashion? My eldest (21) has had his mo since last Movember and my youngest (19) grew his a short while later. The mullets have been with us for a few months too. I guess some people must find them attractive, but I'm not in that camp and would love to have my clean-cut boys back.🙂

DD21 had a thing about them and all her male friends (possibly boyfriends?) in her first and 2nd year had them. I sent her loads of photos of 80's Dads and it must have done the trick because the current BF who seeems to be here to stay (for now anyway) is clean shaven and has short hair
DS is 17 and the craze has thankfully passed him by - he does have a beard though if he doesn't shave regularly. His sister says he loos like a "Discord Mod". I do not know what that is but I don't think its a good thing

thelongesday · 15/06/2026 14:55

Is it a northern thing? Thankfully we don't have it round here.

All I can think of is 'Calm down, calm down'.

Tonissister · 15/06/2026 14:59

I've grown used to DS's mullet. He has thick curly hair and I think he looks more alpaca than Harry Enfield's scousers.

AnnieApples · 15/06/2026 15:03

Oh yes. Youngest has a mullet, eldest has a thick black moustache. Both awful 😂 I say nothing but privately, I just these these 2 gorgeous young men who’d look far better without them. My friend has daughters who do similar ‘uglifying’ things that she hates. Fake eyelashes, for one.

Nofeckingway · 15/06/2026 15:04

Was in Ireland recently and I tell ya it looks even worse on redheads .😂

DramaAlpaca · 15/06/2026 15:11

Mine are a bit older, late twenties/early thirties. One has wonderful wavy dark hair that I'm so jealous of, he wears it long, just past his shoulders and swept back from his face. The other two keep their hair short but ruin the clean-cut look with scruffy short beards. I'd almost rather a mullet, tbh.

I think it's their turn now . When I think of some of the styles in the 80s , 90s , it's total cringe . I had it all . Looking like Human League , long Renaisse perm like Julia Roberts, chopped like Annie Lennox , Grunge ...makes for some laughs looking at old pictures . Then I have SIL who never changed her Lady Di style .

I rather like it boys . What is the female equivalent? Anything is better than the fake tan , false eyelashes , thick brow TOWIE look .

I've often thought that girls and young women these days don’t seem to have hairstyle trends. They all generally seem to have long hair which may be waves or straightened. It’s looks lovely but they’re all the same.

it’s nice to see the chaps continuing with the daft fashions that their own kids will
laugh about in years to come.

I don’t believe mullets have ever been out of fashion in Australia.

@Elbowpatch if you've seen the documentary about the mushroom murders in Australia currently on Netflix, I was slightly disconcerted to see the main doctor in the case - who seems to be a professional in his late 30s or early 40s, dressed very professionally but with a mullet with a stripe shaved into the side of his hair!! Different standards in different countries for sure.

Xiaoxiong · 15/06/2026 16:50

@Nofeckingway according to the link posted by @Elbowpatch, there is a special category of mullets in the competition called "ranga" for red haired mullets. Clearly they felt that allowing red heads to enter against other mullets would blow everyone else out of the water so had to segregate them off into their own class to keep the competition fair.

Padz12 · 15/06/2026 17:11

My 11 year old has a mullet and has done for about 3 years, he looks fab!
He is a rugby player so doesn’t look out of the ordinary at the club 😂

MenoOCD · 15/06/2026 17:34

My 15 year old has had a curly mullet for a couple of years however it’s about to get even worse! He’s planning on getting a skullet the first day of the summer holidays 😩

GasPanic · 15/06/2026 17:36

Take the opportunity to join in with big hair and massive shoulder pads.

There is no greater fashion killer than seeing your parents joining in.

I’m afraid I find it difficult to get past the mullet = bogan association

forceofhabitandnotneed · 15/06/2026 17:42

I'm genuinely baffled by what Gen Z straight women find attractive, or at least not an ick thing - mullets, facial hair, scruffy T-shirts, paunchy guts, nerdy hobbies.

I only wish Gen X women had been like that when I was a younger guy!

TrayBakesAreSweet · 15/06/2026 17:43

My 17yo has a mullet. Now that it’s growing out, it looks brilliant. He has fabulous black wavy hair that sticks out in all directions🤣

TequillaSunset · 15/06/2026 17:54

Mullets and moustaches are revolting. I cannot bear to look at anyone with them. It is a trend that should be consigned to history books forever.

I hated them first time around but it is proper ick territory now. Gen Z women seem to not feel the same way though, which is just as well!

FKAT · 15/06/2026 18:05

I have teen DSs and work with teenagers but don't see many moustaches or mullets in my area (north London). I do see the occasional ones in central London but otherwise many kids seem to have the curls on top / short back and sides.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 15/06/2026 18:05

My 18yo has avoided the mullet but has not shaved since the start of exam season so looks a little like Shaggy. Not quite got enough facial hair to cultivate a proper beard and looks like he’s emptied a pot of iron filings on his face. I am keeping my lips closed but inwardly hoping his GF says enough is enough. However, she is too nice and loves him for all that he is, so I fear I will have to suffer it for months yet… 🤦🏽‍♀️

My DS14 is going for the Kurt Cobain look at the moment. It looks great for about 10 minutes after it's been washed and then it just looks so lanky and greasy.

It could be worse, remember the boys with crunchy mega-hold gel spiky hair of the early 00s...

I don't think Kurt washed at all (he was still hot)

DancingNotDrowning · 15/06/2026 19:02

The mullets, taches, blouson leather jackets and aviator style reading glasses would all have made a list of “essentials” for a stereotypical pedo in the 90/00s but my DC are leaning in to the look.

their girlfriends love it and DDs bf looks similar

i’m officially old

Cobrakainerd · 15/06/2026 19:35

I love the comparison with an alpaca! 😂 Elvis the Alpaca! ( Facebook reference in there)

JohnofWessex · 15/06/2026 19:36

Call the Taste Police!

Nofeckingway · 15/06/2026 21:32

@FKAT Is that style called the Meet Me at McDonalds? I love that the boys are the hair fashion adventurers.

parkezvous · 15/06/2026 21:57

22yo DS has just shaved the tash… mullet still present!
