Steely Dan. Any fans?

I'm not a huge fan but a latter-day appreciator of their music. I only have one of their albums which is a compilation but it has some good songs. I think of those I've heard, I like 'Peg' and 'Hey Nineteen' the most. 'Deacon Blues' is a good song but it could do with being a little shorter!

@ageingdisgracefully i had forgotten sweet freedom it’s a fantastic song you’re right ❤️ he was so handsome when he was younger too, still looks good though and seems a nice person in interviews

I was wondering when you said about his voice not sounding so great whether he would be on the Doobies' tour supporting Santana. Confirmed on IG that yes, he is, so still going strong, fingers crossed.

I loved Steely Dan in my 20s but I can’t enjoy it now despite trying to.
I find the whole vibe really dated, I hate the production style, I don’t like the vocals, it’s so odd that your tastes can change so much.

but some music just doesn’t age for me

Ah, my parents often had Steely Dan on when I was younger.

When they used to look after my two when they were little, DS1 loved "Back Jack" as he called it 😍

That's "Do it again", one if my favourites! 😄

@queenceleste i think my very favourite Joni song is ‘in France they kiss on main street’ closely followed by Edith and the Kingpin but it’s such a difficult choice

Joni Mitchel - Black Crow.

I remember hearing the base rhythm on the radio aged 13, immediately crashed my cassette radio into record... been a fan ever since, saw her live a couple of times.

(Edith and the Kingpin, also a fave)

@Dbank that was the legendary Jaco Pastorius on Bass

Re Michael last year, his voice still hits the highs but it's like he can't hold them as well. All completely understandable of course with age but still makes me sad if people like him are coming to the end of a career that has been as a pp said iconic. Have you seen this skit?

I loved SD and also Donald Fagan. His Album The Nightfly was excellent.

I’m a huge steely Dan fan . I love hey nineteen , Haitian divorce , also love the gaucho album and in particular glamour profession . I also love the nightfly by Donald fagan. Saw them live once a few months after Walter Becker died . Only song I’m not mad on is “reeling in the years” it’s overplayed and annoying

Fernticket · 13/06/2026 22:06

Love Steely Dan from the age of 11 when Reelin in the years was released. I'm rather older now, but they are still one of my favourite bands. I can also recommend a band called Jango who are heavily influenced by SD, and well worth a listen.

Jango sounds interesting, can you provide a link, I found multiple artists called Jango

Agree with your list especially John Martyn! Very rarely talked about on here. I do disagree with Tracy though as she is a very very nasty person in real life (well she was in the 90’s anyway). But John’s music and who he was as a person, very complex man but a genius song writer.

I didn’t know that about Chapman. When I was younger I never knew anything at all about musicians - no internet! 😆

Just like Fleetwood Mac have been taken up again by teenagers, I keep expecting Steely Dan to have a renaissance. Master craftsmen IMO.
I have music loving older brothers who listened to them in the mid 70s.
My Old School and Dirty Work earworm me regularly!
